I've been giving this a lot of thought for some time now. I think the biggest problem is that so many aspies/HFA's keep their diagnosis a secret, myself included (I've told very few people). The first step towards advocasy, IMO, is spreading awareness of AS/HFA. Even though AS and similar disorders are becoming more well known, people still have misconceptions about autism (i.e. "people with autism can't talk). What needs to be understood is that it's a spectrum disorder and people who have it function at different levels.Teachers need to understand that just because a child does well academically does NOT mean that they don't have a disorder. I didn't get an IEP until I was a junior in high school, because the school district I was in before that refused to refer me to the child study team due to my academic performance in school. So, the first step is letting people we have the disorder (which I've gotten the impression you've done already, but it's important that more people do this) and explaining what is is and how it affects us. Purchasing one of the aspie shirts could help too, because wearing it around could spark people to ask questions.

My job's going okay. A lot of my co-workers are nice, but I have no idea how to go about making friends with anyone.
Simple. You must first find out if about them. There is plenty of disfunctional people who it would be best for you not to hang around with, or you just could not have much fun with. Ask questions, get into a conversation. Maybe when other coworkers are talking you could but in put some of your own imput. That would be an opportunity to make infrences about people at your job. Get involved with there life. Maybe you and this person can do something together. You have already done most of those things with me.

Actually, they go under "nonwestern cultural perspectives." I have to take two, and those were basically the only two classes left. The only reason I didn't put them off longer was I had a limited amount of classes I could sign up for...a lot of classes I wanted were closed.What year are you? Also, for what it's worth, in my undergrad program I had to take a class in "Small Groups". There were like two to choose from, and I chose the one in the business school. Turned out to be the best class in college I ever took. I learned a lot about myself and actually looked forward to the class.
Here was my welcome to grad school: I had a paper due less than a week after class began, 7 pages with at least 5 journal citations. I'm just venting...don't mind me...I'm okay now that I've turned it in.

In New Jersey, there are tons of Italian restaurants everywhere, and many of them are owned by people who are actually from Italy (at my favorite Italian restaurant, some of them actually have wives and children in Italy, but own and work at the restaurant in NJ...they visit Italy often though). The Italian pizza, pasta, etc.are fabulous. Almost every Italian place I've gone to here has Asians working in them, and the food isn't as good though I've started to like spaghetti bolognese. I've found some that I like, but they're still different. I'm also not that big of a fan of Asian food...it's something I like to have once in a while.
To answer your question, I'm in a Sydney suburb.

Chinatown isn't that hot anymore anyway. I'd be thinking the new Art Gallery, Treasury Casino (because it's a beautiful heritage building), Newstead House and New Farm Park or Roma St Parklands. A trip down the river on a ferry is great to get a good feel for all the precincts too.
Botanical Gardens are more historical than hip these days...althought the Riverstage is where some good concerts are held and on Summer nights they have open air movies there where you can lie on a blanket with friends and eat and drink. It was the site of the first farms in the area I believe. There's also a great heritage arcade in the Queen St Mall. But Brisbane can be a let down if you have a pox tour.

Things are going pretty good for me too thanks. Taking a break from here allowed me to sort out the balance in my life and also gain a little understanding about things.

it tires me too, physically and mentally. so it's really bad when i used to try and go out with people and socialise and stuff- i'd come back with a headache and get a migraine and stuff.
i wonder why it makes us physically tired. conversations are so hard.
the things i've used to get me through them as i was growing up aren't very good either i don't think - they make me look more self-centred, which i've only just realised now. because i found that, if someone says about what they did at the weekend or something they like, the best thing to do is for me to think of some way i am connected to the same thing, like if i've been there before or had a similar experience, and tell them about that. because that's the only way i know of to keep the conversation going. but i've only realised over the last few months, that that makes it look like i'm not interested in them, and only interested in myself. i do it online as well, even though i'm better at communicating online. hell i am even doing it now :laugh:
conversations are so hard though. i think that's why a lot of us like these sites and stuff. you have time to think before you respond. whereas IRL, you don't... you just have to do it on the spot. i always end up looknig like an idiot or not thinking of something fast enough... so it's really awkward.
