~ When you get really overstimulated, what helps to calm you down?
Favorite memory as a child. Hard one. I think maybe going to my uncles farm and getting to ride the motor bikes and horses. The freedom that a motorbike gave you to drive anywhere.
I stim and talk to myself (sounds generally like grumbling).
Stimming is generally like most things and over years of trying not to draw attention to myself, stims to least draw attention.
Toe walking, making fists, cracking knuckles, tapping fingers, walking close to a wall surreptitiously dragging knuckles along it, pacing around, these type of things.
Thanks for asking ;D

1. Did you and TCO know each other before you were officially dx'ed spazz?

No I have known him a little while and well before he was on I2 but known his lady three or four years.
Like them both.
I live in Canberra which is about between the two. It is crappier than either. :)

What do you sell, Les?
-
When you lokked at ebf's post did it occur to you that "sell, Les" would be a pallindrome w/o the comma there?
-
what is toe walking?
-
Telecommunications and Electricity products is what I sell and whilst "Sell" and "Les" are almost palindromes I did not get it 'cause I got the dumbz. :zoinks:
Toe Walking in walking on the to or ball of the foot to get a bit more intense pressure and bounce. Probably looks ubergay but it helps so I it is all good.
-
almost palindromes? dear me. tell me what is an almost palindrome?
does it help physically or mentally?
-
almost palindromes? dear me. tell me what is an almost palindrome?
does it help physically or mentally?
Well the first bit is a palindrome is a word or phrase that reads the same backwards as forward.
"Do geese see God"
Good example
"sees" is a palindrome word.
Does it help you Physically or mentally?
That I dunno. Probably not. :P
-
I can only walk/run stars in a toe walk. You should see my calves and outter thighs. Legs of steel, baby. Legs of steel.
-

Legs of steel has me thinking of the bad girl in the James Bond film that kills her lovers by squeezing their ribs with her inner thighs.....sorry you were saying something about....something .
Sorry got distracted.

Now I know why I haven't gotten laid in years. Damn. Need to stop killing off my lovers.

Yes a bit of a shame. I really like EBMF
Still worse ways to go
-
Love the sexy toe walk
Works miracles for calves indeed.
(Not to scare you off Sir Les >:D )
-
EBMF would probably tell you he'd at least die happy.
Hyke is my long lost twin. Of this I am convinced. We'll just ignore the age difference and the fact that we've always lived in different countries. That's just trivial stuff.

Tried to get himself off by strangling himself whilst off his chops on drugs....bit silly
I like Aussie accents and I have a shocker.
As appalling as Milla's attempt at trying to sound Australian might be....it is really not THAT far off some off the really rural Australian's. :o
-
Oh! I just thought he offed himself.
-
No it was an accident. Iirc he was sitting against a door with a belt around the door handle and oops. There would be worse ways to go, definitely.

No there are unsubstantiated rumours....and they are good enough for me.

There is a funny social commentary about pet owners looking like their pets. You do....if your pet is facing the other way with its tail in the air.
-
How do you manage to write the way you do when it is difficult for you to do?
-
A good question and I will give you a sensible answer.
I am dyslexic. Part of me like Autism. I love reading and writing, always have. At school I did poorly. My parents basically just after too many nights and for too long labouring and getting embarrassed and frustrated at my own ineptitude at reading aloud just used to sign the reading books as read. My teachers used to fill my pages with unslightly underscores and read circles and my writing got smaller and smaller until they could barely read the writing little lone the spelling errors and it is a legacy I have kept to this day.
That said I persevered. I took a nightfill job in my later years and this paid for two tutors and as a result I passed (though not well) and came out of school barely literate. I joined the workforce and did nightschool part time for a few years to improve my writing. Pressure was off and it basically taught me to read and write better. The prep course for Uni resulted in me getting accepted into Uni.
I figured that writing was never going to be easy and no one else was going to help so I may as well do as best I could. It was not the writing or reading that was the problem. I do enjoy it as I say, it was me.
Most shit like this I push myself at and am a hard taskmaster. My job at the moment is in sales on the phone. Social skills and empathy and understanding the customer's mindset? Yeah there is a big part in this and it is difficult as all hell. It is harder for me and I take shorter breaks and work longer hours than the others and they laugh about it all. I need to do it in order to manage my job though. I am doing better than most if not all there and being very noticed by the upper echelons. It is not because I am better just because I work my arse off.
I have a presentation to do on Friday in front of an audience. Scares shit out of me. Then again most shit I have to do at work and what not does. It is just something that I have to do in order to get on in life. No one is going to make my sales for me or get me moved up the ladder there and that is the way I will be able to keep food on the table, roof over my head and provide a role model for my kids of a good Dad.
Might sound all a bit too stressful. How do I manage my stress? I don't. I have heart attacks :P
-
Wow. I think you are one awesome person to work at it like you have. :)
I did a uni preparation course as well, I would not have gotten into uni otherwise.
Maybe for your presentation, you can show more so you talk less. I did that when I had to give a ten minute presentation.
I have no dyslexia at all (I think myself lucky for this) but I have a hard time getting my thoughts out in written form. It takes ages to write anything. Being a slow typer makes it worse. I cannot write fiction as I find it difficult to think of something to write about. I got very low marks in school.
Anyway, I admire you for your perseverance. I don't think the huge amount of perseverance you have is common in people.
-
Thanks Ren. OK very stuck for words. ;)

Yeah, cos someone from NZ can complain about accents.

I'm such a perv.
Think Australian accent is sexy, as well as Scottish.

It is a cultural thing.
:google: Larrikinism.

I want to know why you keep making this generalisation. Is it because you don't know many Australians?
-
Did not realise there was a NZ vs Australia thing and still don't know why you generalise about Australians? :-\
-
I want to know why australians are all smart arses. Is it becaus eyou hate your accents?
More to the point, since when did New Zealand sheep have access to the internet? :toporly:
-
Did not realise there was a NZ vs Australia thing and still don't know why you generalise about Australians? :-\
The reason why you don't know is because you did not realise.
Relations between Australia and New Zealand are similar to that of other neighbouring countries with a shared British colonial heritage, such as Canada and the United States. Some have defined the relationship as less one of friendship than of brotherhood, beset by sibling rivalry.[3]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia_%E2%80%93_New_Zealand_relations
Although i find it hard to see that you didn't realise. I've been exposed to Australia vs NZ jokes all my life and i'm only 24.
Hell we sound the same (for the most part) look the same and died alongside each other in the WW's. Still don't have a problem with crew from NZ. Do we poke gentle fun sure but isn't that all in good spirits? No?
-
Jesus, keep your wits about you aussies.
Yeah I give Australians fucking shit.
Also
Yeah I would have an Australians back ANY DAY when up against an american or pom. It's all in good fun, we totally bash each other but we are brothers.
-
Now say six and go fuck some sheep. Then fly over here and go on the dole.
Does that cover it? :green:

Haha, yeah, we had that for dinner too.
-

Neither did I except some sheep jokes and accent imitating. I probably don't see or hear as much of this as others do, being from WA - a long way from New Zealand.
But I don't say "all New Zealanders are this" or "all New Zealanders are that" because I don't know many New Zealanders. Jokes or not, that is why I give a shit.
-
I have a cousin who was born in NZ, plus my aunt, his mum, lived there for ages. Went over there when I was a baby and when I was 5/6yo for about 7 weeks visiting them with my Nana (had my birthday over there).
It's really no different to over here, maybe they should become part of Australia. We could just annex them :evillaugh:
-
It's more like how guys rip on their mates and play terrible jokes etc on them.

This is true. I pick on CG all the time.

This is true. He's a big meanie. (emo)
Truth be told, he gets off on me saying "out and about in a boat" but I won't say it as often as he wants me to and that makes him grumpy. :zoinks:

I didn't used to be able, when I first migrated to Australia, to pick the difference between Aussie speech and Kiwi. I can now, though.
-

We do sound VERY similar.
-
And that's why I never get ticked off when randoms mistake me for American. Hell, I'm even losing the ear for it myself (distinguishing Canadian from American) unless I listen really hard, or unless it's a noticeably-strong regional accent like New Yorker or Cajun.
-
Fair call too. It isn't that when someone announces they are from NZ that other Aussies say "You poor bastard" or anything.
I think the discrepancy between Northern Queenslanders and the rest of Australia or City vs rural Australians is no greater than Australians and New Zealanders, in respect to accents. It is there and if you have an ear for it you will pick it mostly.
-
I remember a TV ad which was part of a public-service campaign about seatbelts, and the actors were really bunging it on with the Far North Queenslander-speak, which was amusing. And sometimes I'll pick a South Australian from the way they pronounce their "oh."
By way of justifying my posting in your thread, I should ask a question, shouldn't I? I considered asking your opinion on weighty matters like the cultural cringe, whether we as a nation are "over" the whole penal-colony-origin thing, and so on and so forth. But bugger it, I'm gonna go with:
Who's the best hope, do you think, in the 09-10 Sheffield Shield? Or are you saving all your energy for barracking for the Aussies in the Winter Olympics? :green:

Winter Olympics may be good for the occasional "Bradbury moment" but barring that....
As for Cricket well I used to be really boned up on Cricket and Footy because I could go to a pub and steer conversation away from Cars and tools (which I am completely ignorant) and talk about girls (which I am only slightly more knowledgeable) or sport which I could talk about with some expertise. These days....I am out of the loop.
So that brings me to the first two questions which you posed :green:
The Penal colony thing is I believe a position of pride with Aussies. Having said that it is seen as a sacred thing and making fun of it is the best way to start a punch up. Of course no Aussie would dare or would want to. I think it actually ties in very nicely with the "cultural cringe". We take great pride in being tough, laconic, honest, rough, larrikins but hate others viewing this as cultural empty or inferior. It feels to us a lot more truer and full of integrity other cultural standards. Unfortunately whilst we cheer and embrace Bazza MacKenzie, Dame Edna Everidge, Sir Les Patterson and Crocodile Dundee for the aspects of "real Australians" they portray there is also the risk of them being seen without the biased and "Ocker filters" as uncouth idiotic slobs. So we are caught in a difficult position. A love/hate relationship and polarised perspectives that exist in the same cultural identities.
Does that make any sense? :P

We got stuck with what we have, so be proud of it?
A few of my ancestors are Welsh and I know of one that made barges on the Thames.
-

Aussie ancestors were captured by British authorities and for generally minor misdemeanors (performed in an effort to survive in a country that could not and would not elevate their dire social or financial standing) shipped them off to an inhospitable as punishment. To toil to the rest of their days and die. It was supposed to be the greatest punishment.
What happened was these tough and resourceful bastards did the unthinkable. They found a home. They served their time and with true frontier mentality found a land of opportunities that did not exist for them back home. Their peer's descendants back home may have be doomed to a lack of vocational or social choice but the descendants of those unwanting immigrants became whatever they could be because there was no bar to anything because your father or grandfather was a prisoner (whose wasn't). The values and humour developed and we found beauty in this land. Hell we don't care if we have the nastiest spiders and snakes and sharks and crocodile because we have beaches and countryside and wide open spaces.
They sent us off to die and we lived and lived well and continue to prosper. Stuck with what we have? Sort of. :P Proud? Hell yeah!

The UK has spawned some interesting children...
Australia... the US...
Funny these two countries in particular have developed our personalities from our dysfunctional relationship with our parent country. And the sentiments still survive, even though the original "children" are no longer alive.

Damn Right!
That is I guess why when the "convict" or "colonial" thing is thrown at us we are "Yeah and what of it?" :D

I gt accused of having evey accent under the sun except NZ or Australian, and its fucking annoying.
Oh except the time some bo in Auckland told me I was "common".
He can fuck off and die. One thing I can't stand is people making statements about me that are false.

-

Yep its the same with everywhere.
Kiwis and aussies sound the same to a lot of foreigners. Just like Canadians and Americans sound the same to a lot of forigeners. Very simialar accents but you can't differentiate properly unless you're very accute in that sort of thing or you've lived in one of the two places.

I sure hope we continue to get Bradbury moments. He may have won his medal by good luck and the mistakes of others. But the sheer fact that he was competing at such a high level in his sport is proof that he is no mug.

Yes, it's like a family-loyalty thing where you might tease and torment your brother at home, but if anyone else dares start in on him, they're in for a blue.

A few years ago, I went to visit the ruins of the old prison barracks at Port Arthur, Tasmania. Unbelievable that children of 14 could be sent away for things like stealing a hanky from someone's pocket. But as you say, it suited the British authorities to rid themselves of an entire stratum of society that was no longer economically useful.
For me, one of the best things about this country is the "have a go" mentality: Never assume that you can't do something just because you've never done it before. Have a lash at it, and if it succeeds, great; and even if it doesn't, at least you've made the effort. This is so much better than giving in to hopelessness simply because of your social origins or your financial status.
-
Right on every point as far as I make it :green:
The fair go attitude too goes hand in hand with the larrikinism. If they can take a bit of stick and give it back they are "all right".
We had an interesting group start in training. An Irish guy, a Somalian Muslim, A gay guy, one girl and another couple of nondescripts and me (on the spectrum). It was funny from the outset we needled each other in different ways and laughed and teased and all got on famously.
The girl putting up with us being deliberately misogynistic and returning fire well. The black guy being teased about his skin colour and religion and making fun of us, Irish jokes and gay jokes in excess. It was bonding because we all understood the intent. Had there have been an issue it would have toned down dramatically and would have left it very reserved and cordial between us.

Who and where is Mark Winter? :orly:
Mark Winter was a moderator who banned a dipshit from AFF that you will remember fondly called Lucy. She joined AFF around the same time as another member from there called Woman From Mars. Lucy was convinced that WFM was Mark Winter. To that end she eventually enlisted some sap to call WFM.
WFM wasn't. I set up a troll account called Warkminter and started trolling Lucy.

I want to know why australians are all smart arses. Is it becaus eyou hate your accents?
It is a cultural thing.
:google: Larrikinism.
I did google that and it clarified a couple of points for me. One Aussie that I worked with years ago would respond to my jibes about his accent with a horrendous yank accent that was definitely derived from John Wayne. I have a pretty good idea which side of the Larrikin - Wowser nexus you land. When you are taking the piss with yanks is your American accent John Wayne derived?

Spot on. I had not really thought about it before, but yeah.
I think that part of the thing about Larrikinism is that we celebrate taking the piss. We don't want to be taking things too seriously and want to laugh at ourselves. We don't mind others doing the same but we don't want to be seen as complete fuckwits. Dividing line is rather small. :P
Fine line between a jester and a fool.

Being able to joke with friends without someone being a pussy is important.

I want to know why australians are all smart arses. Is it becaus eyou hate your accents?
It is a cultural thing.

Yup you know something is pretty fucking bad when it is not able to be joked about. Conversely if you are going to get offended over trivial shit you only ask for a further lend.

I'm guessing you enjoy reading books (philosophical, historical, psychological). Am I mistaken? And if true, what are some of the books you've enjoyed reading.

I'm guessing you enjoy reading books (philosophical, historical, psychological). Am I mistaken? And if true, what are some of the books you've enjoyed reading.
Actually I was a weird kid. As a child I would spend hours reading encyclopedias. I was terribly dyslexic. I still am dyslexic and did terribly at school and left it barely able to write properly. Lot of stuff in there but my ability to convey what was in there was very diminished. I wrote slowly and laboriously and my syntax, grammar, punctuation and spelling was appalling.
Still that did not matter. What I thought was important was learning and I COULD read. Money earned in an after hours job gave me enough money to pay for tutoring to pass the weaker subjects to get me through year 11. I started working. A few subjects at night school in legal studies got me (without the pressure of performance) to learn to write properly and so on.
I still have a quest for learning. I have studied Philosophy and Ancient History at University.
I do still read article upon article whenever I can on anything remotely interesting on the internet or at libraries but book reading generally is not something that I do a lot of.
Probably the best reading book I have read recently is The Holy Blood and Holy Grail,
Whilst this was lambasted as a fraud and what have you, the history that in the text and the many of the integral points in the book are far from fraudulent. Best it has proved is that there was a guy trying to falsely connect himself to Jesus by bloodline and that he did forge some documents. Whilst everyone waves the proof around saying that this proves everything in the book was bogus, it is simply not so.

Next question:
What makes you so good at kicking ass?

Next question:
What makes you so good at kicking ass?
Thanks mate. I dunno if I am so good at it.
I think that I am just comfortable in who and what I am and not. I take pride in being what I am. I think I have got to an age and place in my life that I just consider what I have and who I am is me. I know i am honest and don't try to build on lies I can not support.
I am not scared or intimidated by people on the internet. It is not like they are going to ruin my life IRL. So why should i care?
In the meantime there is a bucket load of things to be learned and experienced on the internet and fun too.
I like to make my own fun and be my own person and it is working out alright for me so far :P

Is "Pom" reserved for the English, or does it apply to Americans as well?
-
Is "Pom" reserved for the English, or does it apply to Americans as well?
No "Pom" or "Pommy" is purely for The British. If phrased correctly it is the English only.
The Americans get called Yanks. (Derived from Yankee)
Unfortunately when it comes to rhyming slang becomes "Yank" = "Septic Tank" or simply the derivative "Seppo"
Yank and Pom are not seen as insulting but calling the Americans Seppos is normally designed for use when been disparaging whereas Yank is just an offhand or shortcut to saying Americans or US Citizens or whatever.
-
Aussies use rhyming slang as well? I had never heard of it until a couple weeks ago.
-

Yes it emigrated with the Cockney convicts and is not as common as all that but we have an awareness of it and the more country you go and the older generation the more prevalent.

Any collections?
-
No, I guess any thought to collections was washed away with the financial difficulties that I have only recently rid myself off. I am building a collection of Conan books though. Love reading them for a bit of escapism.
-
Don't know if it's been asked before, but how tall are you?
-
I am 5'9". My baby boy in now 5'8". I am pleased I bred some height into the family line. My Father was 5'7" and my mother 4'11". I was never gonna be a giant.

When did his growth spurt start?
I'm wondering how tall he will be when he finishes growing.
-
I think he will be around 6'1-6'2"
His sister is taller for a girl her age than what he is for a boy his age surprisingly
He has always been tall for his age and seems to just consistently grow. He has lost a lot of his "puppy fat" and starting to become a lot more physical and physically aware. He is interested in doing weights and learning boxing from me. I am surprised he is getting too a lot more co-ordinated.
-
Very good height for his age.

One thing as a male and as a man he will not suffer for with confidence I think :)

Sorry if you have given details on this before: How did you get diagnosed with dyslexia? How old were you at the time? And did you get any treatment for it?
-
Sorry if you have given details on this before: How did you get diagnosed with dyslexia? How old were you at the time? And did you get any treatment for it?
I was 24 I think. At the time I was referred to a specialist and the (Iren?) glasses were all the rage as the cureall. They were looking to run these kinds of tests as a way to cure me and so. I felt like it was all kind of "new agey" and put little store in it. So i fobbed off the appointment and never went. I copped shit from my then wife but that was no biggie.
-
You mean Irlen. I wear Irlen lenses but not for dyslexia as I don't have that. I have perceptual problems and am over sensitive to yellow light. So the lenses filter out a lot of yellow light.
They (Irlen lenses) don't cure dyslexia. But they can help make reading easier. I have seen it for myself with GA as she has reading issues. Without Irlens - reading aloud not very good. With Irlens - better, a lot more fluent.
That was ages ago for you. More questions: Do you have trouble with telling between left and right? Trouble with reading analogue clocks?
-

Yes that was what they were called Irlen.
Yup left and right is poor. Spatial perception poorer (not only width and length but depth too) an have little ability to extrapolate meaning out of a map and directions. It is hit and miss.
-
Yes, those things are found to be associated with dyslexia. GA has been thinking she may have dyslexia. I think she might be right.
I know Irlens can help with spatial perception too. They make a big difference for me with height and width but not depth. Maybe you could give it a try, it is not as "new age" as it used to be and there has been studies done on the method.

Back then is 1994. Was a while ago :P. It was very much snake oil is the pitch and little real research but break through findings. I have no doubt it would be a lot better nowdays.
-
I was 17 in 1994.
The diagnostic process is quite long. Then to get the right colour lenses takes even longer. I have seen a few people around wearing Irlens but not many.

I am 41 now and with much of what I am, I am kinda comfortable and accepting of me. I guess to me the hassle and the change is really not something that I feel motivated to.

What happened with the accident you had a while back? Did they pay to replace your car?

Yeah they paid it out and what i got was enough to replace the car with another and pay out all my debt.
The kids also have around $30000 in trust each for them which is kinda cool.

Do you collect anything?
I used to collect stamps when i was a kid. Nowdays? No. I am a horder generally. I get very funny about throwing out near on anything and this has been of some benefot ion the past. You know that company that come back to you a year after you have finished being their customer an ddemands payment for an overdue bill? Give me a day of frantic searching and i will be on the phone saying '"G'day, got an interesting letter from you dated X with reference number Y. Do you have that on your records? Oh great. YOu are saying I owe money for a bill. Correct? Came you look up this payment made on date a of B? Oh yes and if I had not keep this scrap of a bill from a year ago, what efforts would you have gone to to collect this debt as you had not found it in your own systems for 12 months? I see. Can you go and get a Manager then mate because you seem entirely too helpful to yell at"

You know mate I simply dunno. I do not understand Aussie girls at all. They are strange creatures. Halle Bopp was a Nw Zealand girl and that is close to Australian. Look how strange she was.
I think that as a bit of different flavour a Yank bloke would probably fit the bill nicely. As I say though I have no real idea.
-
I am an Aussie girl and there is PSP and Sinnocent/Sister O' Madness too.
I think it depends on the type of American dude, whether there is compatibility.
Sir Les, are you going to change your avatar back? I can't see your current one.

Yes you three are all Aussie chicks but relatively normal. I just felt like picking on Halle Bopp for some reason :zoinks:

You don't have your old avatar saved? I looked up Al Swearengen and there are stacks of pictures of him. What I do for avatars is save them directly from the Google search page as they are already the right size for an avatar. It is sort of cheating but oh well. The second pic I am posting here is quite funny I think. You can use the first picture, not sure if it will resize automatically though.

You could save it to your computer (right click on it and "Save image as..." to your Pictures folder). Then go to your profile page on here where it says to choose a personalised picture and choose the upload from your computer option. Click on Choose File and your pictures should come up in a separate window. Click on the picture you want as an avatar and then "Open" I think. It should upload and then you go to the bottom of your Profile page and click on Save Changes.
I am going by memory here, I hope it is right!

purple or pink?

Coke or Pepsi ?

I really had no clue what to be when I crew up. I did not ant to get trade or be in the forces and wanted an office type job I guess.
What I would do now if I could have my time again? A lawyer.
What I want to be? A retired lottery winner I think would suit me just fine.
Coke hands down pepsi I will drink as an absolute last resort.
Purple over pink. My girl is pretty much out out her pink stage and I am not with any misgiving.

is your Av from a tv show deadwood? I thought it was an old looking Lovejoy so I googled lovejoy and it said the actor who played him is now in deadwood. will have to check out that show.
-
Yup Al Sweargen (Ian McShane). He was by far the best character in Deadwood. Certifiably evil, devious, intelligent and tough, with his own morality.

How old are you?

Ancient. 41

I prefer Great Southern Land to this song and Sounds of them to both of these. These are Aussie anthem songs that really embrace Australia

Ah yes there is a reason for that. I think that after tweaking their noses a little they are saying 'You know what I should have said. If he was here now and said X I would say Y. He would be owned." Then when i go back they get clowned again. Must be frustrating for them.
-
Les, what does it mean to be a man.
Good question. I can only define it by my values and understanding. Much is likely only understood by doing and being or in the vaguest or most general terms.
I will try
A man is bigger and larger than women and childrren and should seek to protect both. Much is said about maternal instincts and mother knows best and whatever. Sociaety constructs these ideologies. I think that men are far more than sperm distribution checkpoints. Men are (or should be) protectors. They ought to protect those weaker and more vulnerable. Seek to give guidance to young men as good role models and figures to look up to in terms of restraint and strength and pride.
They ought not be emotional and fickle. Strong, stable, dependable, solid. They ought to give a good example of the kind of men their daughters (should they be so inclined) should favour value-wise.
I think that the movies can rate some very good examples of good men.
The quiet, honest and value strong Atticus Finch
The devoted and loving Sam from I am Sam
The decency and powerful William Parrish from Meet Joe Black.
As I say hard to define but where we see examples of such behaviour we ought to cherish it and seek to do the same as men.
Value and pride ourselves on our masculinity and what it means to us.
-
For some things, I'm sure mother does know best, btw & it's more the overswing from 'feminists' who don't, actually, want equality of the sexes or really don't understand their own sex, let alone men but better not get me on my soapbox about it! lols, I gathered there was some 'history' between you & several at ZOMG & I'm 'stirring', obviously!
-
YOu know I have a daughter and I thik that the world she grows up in is "better" for her and the benefits reaped from the Feminist movment. I DO believe that the world is better off and I do think in general that society is better off. But like all things it is not perfect and that in many ways that it has also hurt society. Maybe not in genral or even easily definable ways. But hurt it nonetheless. Is this better than what was before....I would have to say yes. So I will have to see examples where Feminism and Feminists have done disservices to society and say "Better than the alternative."
-
Sure, the world is improving, overall, in many ways & it'll swing back to a better balance! Problem being what 'equality' means in human terms. I'm as human as somebody who's got no legs but there's plenty of clear practical disadvantages to not having them. Only, with the sexes, the differences (the ones relevant to a general discussion about it) are less clear & what they do mean is much less so. Along with people's ability to make total nonsense sound plausible, it's a minefield of a debate, at best! lol
-

OK this is what I mean Bruce
There was a time that husbands were allowed to beat and rape their wives. Nowdays this is very much looked down on and crimislised (like it should be). Men can no longer use this to dominate women and trap them.
However how often in cases where a woman wants to "punish" a man, will she use this or even the insinuation of this "the voilent ex" to get better support for herself or put up barriers to child access. The courts and social services will support her and the man is disempowered and can for no good reason be barred from seeing his children or have what may be reasonable access denied on a spiteful fancy.
Better than the alternative though.
The same with general allegations of rape. There was a time that to make a case for rape the victim had to go through a gruelling process in which she was basically classed as guilty herself to make a case for her claim of rape. She would have to prove that it was not consensual and that she made every effort to fight him off and resist.
Nowdays many women in situations where they are wanting to punish the man or where they regret the encounter will use this as another way of attacking a man. The rape claim. It is appalling because it waters down the legitimate claims that NEED support.
Child support from my understnding was set up to force the male partner to paying towards the children and stop them from initiating a dissolution of the relationship and leaving the mother a single mother and having to support herself and her child alone. They tried from what i understand to make this a deterrent costwise for the man to leave.
However with more than 50% of marriages not working , it is not always the man wanting to leave nor the want to desert his parental responsibilities. If there is a breakdoen in the relationship shared care is still not a default and it means that a father wanting to see his children will often have to work long hours to afford to pay tax an dchild support and get little access and not be able to set himself up fionancially for at least the 18 years of the child growing up. His chance at being able to provide for yet another family is restricted and The ex-wife will get the child support and often social support and/or welfare and society will endevour to look after her interests in thougt that the children will be alright. All the while she will get the lion share of the child access and usually a lions share of assets on the dissolution of the marriage.
In all of this, which is the better alternative? I am a man and i still say today's way is far better and fairer. It is simply not good or commendable but far better.
Of course in all of this there can be made very good cases for things working in reverse and individual casess where such and such happened and none of this is hard and fast BUT the point to be made is that the changes in society are not all beneficial and very open to abuse and even with acknowledging this, today's way is better and would not have come about without Feminism.
-
I agreed, Al, about it being far better than it was! It's just that, inevitably, when the main work of any such movement is, actually, done, it gets taken over by the extremist members. The moderates say 'job done' & go off to get on with their lives, while the extremists carry on campaigning. It's also kind of like a religion; one priest abusing somebody gets far more attention than all the basically good ones that mostly go unnoticed. Glad you did the 'essay' about it & I hope you understand my 'angle' on it, which was never disagreeing with you, anyway! (It'd usually be obvious if I were, lol)
-

Sorry yes got your PM but been a bit preoccupied. I left for a pretty good reason and not really that keen to stir some life into it.

Ah, well, according to a source, that was, mostly, to do with a user who's left there, now? I wouldn't expect that to put you off the whole forum, though, so I imagine there must be a bit more to this....?

Oh there were two there I did not have the time of day one was Grantenelli (sp?) the other was someone starting with M (Not being vague, it was a while ago. Two members with usernames starting with M and one was really nice and the other one not so nice). Was a waste of my time being there and I can not see how it would be different now. I tried to put a bit of life into the place. When I was there. My efforts nt that appreciated.

Well, the source only mentioned G, so seems to have missed something! It seems such a shame but I think I've done as much as I can to help them, then. Unless Hykes would like to pop back & contribute but I assume not! That forum isn't well suited to you though, I have to admit. (I don't think it'd be much better suited to me going back, either, really....?) :-\

Of course we were once Britsh before that little matter of the arrestingand year long voyage and banishment to Australia thing. But that is all water under the bridge. :P
As to my Mad cow? I idolise her and love her to bits and I think she thinks that I am Ok too :)

Oh, yes, probably for stealing a loaf of bread, or some such deadly serious crime, I expect, Sir Les! Those callout threads just, like, stalled? Well, MLA gave his up but TA hasn't &, of course, anybody can post in mine...? What's happening, there; I don't get it?
-
What I see is that in a forum that people are socially and communication impaired, you are seen as communicating worse in so far as you have pissed off/irritated/annoyed some people in some of your efforts.
I like callouts generally not just for the banter but because it brings up gripes and so on to teh surface and gets people to explainand examine their position.
What some people are not seeing or perhaps not appreciating is the fact that you do tend to stop doing the things that piss people off when it is bought to your attention. What the do not appreciate is that you do not understand it is an issue beore you do it (and perhaps after) and then go ahead with something else they consider annoying straight after. It is all subjective.
Repetition of the same thing over and over can wear down people's reserve, vagueness in posts that do not seem to answer anything put to them, random porn clips in threads on humour, An abundance of emoticons for no apparent reason. things like this tend to make them think perhaps that you have or are looking at ways to irritate and after being addressed on one thing you go to the next.
They call it trolling or spamming or being stupid or whatever.
Are they right? Of course they are right in saying it annoys them and whether they are invested enough to call you out on them is up to them and I think great they let you know. Whether you are doing it deliberately to piss them off? I dunno.
Does it piss me off? No. I kind of sigh sometimes and move on. I have the benefit of having seen you post from years gone by and so see the improvments inposting style from back then.
If someone finds that you don't seem to answer anything in a way that they find anything short of irrelevant, vague, confusing or whatever (in a callout) they may decide not to pursue the matter. I woul dnot consider either a win or the call out process flawed. Just it is miscommunication.
Hope this helps.

Ha! Yeah. Though, what I think I 'won' with MLA was a pretty drastic change in his language to me. When he was, from my POV, calling me rude names, I don't care, there's no excuse & it just amused me. But when he switched to talking like a reasonable adult, I responded rather differently. Sure, tricky balance; not patronizing/ condescending, while not assuming, etc but, hey, I'm supposed to be able to do it. The rest is, indeed, miscommunications & them being 'vague' to me! (Spam seems to be able to mean any posts people don't like but doesn't explain why not, how I can tell, etc, as you covered). I think we covered most of the rest before. As soon as I get guidance I can actually understand, I can do something with it. OK, I have a weird/ childish sense of humor; I didn't choose that or how it'd work & it's better than not having one at all, supposedly. But I need those 2 threads finished, somehow? Must be a way to do it! (& at least you realize it's all subjective!)

Don't sweat it Bruce i have been in one or two callouts myself and they generally either resolve or die. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't.

Uh, I was, mostly, enjoying them, Sir Les? (OK, I'm not good at just giving up, letting go & moving on & all that crap...) ::)

Deadwood's Al Sweargen is a great character. Love his conniving and wheeling and deaiing. He is tough, resourceful and has strong values (whether they are good or bad is a different matter). He is a great character to like.

That's the photo in your avatar, then, is it? Sure looks like an interesting character, with a western feel, though not seen Deadwood, particularly!

What sort of music do you like? Or sorts!

POp and Rock mainly. I dislike the Churned out melodies with no substance by people who have a nice image but no real talent

Well, a lot of people praise 'pop' music for being 'meaningless'! Which it isn't, exactly but that's a :CanofWorms: so, just some examples of which artists/ tracks might help clarify a bit?

MArron 5, Sia, Adele, Cold Chisel, Crowded House/Split Enz, Nickleback, Theseare examples of Artists with a lot of good stuff and of course there are many one hit wonders and the like. Most often an artist will post one or two tracks and if they post othes they will be mediocre at best. I wouls say 1 of 5 songs in the top 40 will be good to listen to but I like listening to the pop stations because enough good songs come up and regularly to make up for the shit too. :)

I dunno. It seems to me that she is obsessively hitting out at the people she imagines (rightly or wrongly) have been against her or are encapusulated in her mind as the enemy
-
Well, yeah? Somehow, in her mind, I'm her enemy, too? Wow, never been anybody's enemy before! Despite, without knowing anything about it, I tried to help her in her other fights! Sheesh, some people. Does remind me of a kitten I fished out of a bramble bush not that long ago, which duly thanked me - with it's claws! *shrugs"

I like Malaysian and Tex-Mex :)
Do you cook it yourself or are there many Tex-Mex restaurants where you live? I mean, I expect to see them on almost every corner here where I live, which isn't that far from Mexico, but I wouldn't think there would be that many Tex-Mex restaurants that far away from Mexico and Texas.
-
I do occassionally but never as nice as what is in the takeaway places. We have a Mexican chain called "Zambereros". They do great food but I still like "The good the bad and the Ugly" in Perth.
There is a place called Paprika near where i work that does great Malaysian food. I am a regular.

I had a burger made from Bison that gave the same impression. Now I don't eat burger because of that pink slime shit. Am I going to be able to find exceptional fish and chips in Oz? Brits and Kiwis do it well.

Half of that's English food, Sir Les! Tut, tut. How about drinks? Fosters, etc?

You know that is the bastard. it is real flip of the coin stuff here. I would like to say that all the fish and chips shops or restuarants dop it well but the truth is generally it is either REALLY nice or ReALLY bad. I am not a great fan probably because of the bad experiences i have had :P

We'll figure something out. I want to check out Bondi beach at some point.

Fosters? Fuck no. No-one drinks Fosters in Australia. I think they stock a small supply for tourists.
Here Crown Lager and Victoria Bitter are more or less staples. rock up with a carton of that under your arm and you won't look like a knob. Bundy Rum is pretty popular too. I drink Bourbon and Cola and that is acceptable too. Vodka and kalau and stuff like that is fine...if you are female. A guy will be discommunicated from a party for such a sin :P

Wondered about Fosters, since I'm one who thinks it tastes like cat's piss but it sure tries to make out it's as Aussie as Bruce & Sheila or something. Any other spirits popular? Not my favorites, Sambuca & Pernod? l o l

They are not so bad. They are culled regularly. Rabbits, cane toads, foxes, and the like really are the bigger problem. Also feral pigs.
We fucked up with these fucking things. Cane toads are a real blight.

Fuck. I was hoping no one would ask me. Not that I have any embarassment but due to my location and the relative size of Canberra saying what i sell would really narrow down my employment and I have been stalked previously at my workplace from someone from the wonderful world of the internet.
Sorry parts. Happy to tell you in Pm if you want to know and will outline my reluctance to tell you online. I do not mistrust you with the information

Well generally there is no real issues with Poms.
There is the stereotype of the whinging pom complete with socks and sadlas complaining endlessly about everything as a a converstion point.
That said it is really a non-issue that should we come acrioss such a person we roll our eyes and nod at each other much like the dumb blonde stereotype.
That said, Poms do fine. My two best friends are Poms. The heat knocks shit out of my mate. I find it too cold here. While I am zipping my jacket yo she is getting around in a short sleeve shirt and dress.

Ok, yeah sounds about right. It's hard to imagine a life in Australia or America, but i think they both are popular places that people here dream of. The one thing that puzzles me is do you have the equivalent of 'council estates', we see on TV the American version a lot, like the 'ghetto's' but i have never seen on TV where poor Australians live.

Yes not really. Yes we have poor areas in the Suburban sprawl. that is mainly governement built houses in an area with maybe dying lawns and car bodies on the verge and such but the houses and blocks are not small. Again there are units which are dotted here and there but not tending to be all together.
If you go inland you will come actoss remote aboriginal communities and these are really 3rd world.
The plight of Aboriginals is really sad here. Not like that of black African Americans but very synomous with the Native Americans. The problem of course is are virtually destroying a culture and neither wiping them out or assimilating them into your own , what is left? There is nothing we as a society can do to pick up the pieces or make things right. Money? nope. Land? Nope. Leave them shattered culturally and let them fend for themselves? Nope.
It is morally reprehensible what was done to them and I really do not think that anything that could have been done generations ago could work now. it is sad.

What about mountains? Do you like getting up in the mountains?
Been up in mountains. In fact Canberra is on a plateau many metres above sea level at the foot of the Brindabellas.
Never really been a hiker. I know this sounds lame but I have never really appreciated or understood hiking or climb. I have always considered the getting somewhere by walking or climbing for ages to be completely overrated. Nothing wrong in theory with a trek but no point doing this (in my mind) for the joy of getting there especially if there are others means.

Oh sorry missed this.
I would have to say that to be perfectly honest, they are not the most loved nation nor the most commended citizens. It doesn't mean an American will have stones thrown at them nor will they be singled out for "special attention". There is a view though that Americans are self-styled world police, overly patronic and ignorant of other cultures and a little bit boorish and overly self-important.
That said I think Aussies are reasonably tolerant. We are a bastard nation and comprised of many people. So you see like a blonde doing something ditzy and everyone rolling their eyes and thinking "Oh this blonde is one of those dumb blondes" or a Pom whining and then they roll their eyes and thinking "Oh this is one of those whinging Pommy bastards", the same would be with an American.
How will PPK go here? I think he will bloody love it! Why because he is not coming over here to see America and I don't think he will be coming over here with an attitude to suggest it. People will show genuine interest in him and warm to him if he is not seeking such. They will not judge automatically. They may ask where he is from and how does he ,llike it here and if he is not seeking to promote US over australia and show a deligt at being in a new place with new experiences and such, they will be very well and genuine disposed to him and not categorise him with a stereotype which might be a little unfair. They would also feel proud of their country and what it has to offer others.
-
Anything else of note in Canberra, particularly?
Canberra is a shitty place to live BUT it is a city uniquely designed and with great landmarks and history. It has a lot to offer the sightseeker and/or tourist. To live here is expensive and the weather comparitive to WA is crappy :P

how do you feel about US troops being stationed in Australia
I am ambivalent to be honest.
I see no reason not to have cordial relationships and perhaps an exchange or whatever. I do not think that it should be on basis of doing us a favour by them being here but i do not think there is the suggestion that this is the case and furthermoire i undertsand entirely if they are needed or wanted to be deployed elsewhere

I dunno what exactly it is about Adelaide water. It tastes tinny and rather horrid and a really off putting colour coming out of the tap. It will not make her sick i should not think but if she has a choice...be far nicer not to.

Has there been any significant agitation to give the Northern Territory state status?
No I think that they will always be a territory and in fact in naming the states both NT and ACT are kind of counted and then as an after thougt we say "Oh yeah I mean territory" Idon't think it has any real effect on them. For us in ACT we are more closely tied to New south Wales.

Do your ACT reps get to vote on national issues in the Houses? Chambers of Parliament is what I mean.
Nevermind, I just found the answer.

I don't have an issue with it. I am used to most men being shorter than me. I think some short women have the issue, IMO. And I feel a lot of men think I am "too tall" for them.

Going to be offline for a bit at Calvrary hospital with ex and daughter. Daughter hit by car
Yikes, is she ok?
-
I hope she's okay.
I got hit by a car last year when on my bicycle. Scary stuff and lucky I got out on one piece. :-\
-
She is very sore. Bad swelling in abdomen. She has pain mess and is asleep besides me. Her mum went home to get some sleep. Staying here. Yesterday's clothes, overtired, stressed and nothing to do but wait for ultrasound. Will stay off work today.
So hope she is ok she is a tough girl and doesn't whinge or cry when in pain, she just goes quiet just like her Dad.
Worried about her.
-
when are you expecting the ultrasound?
-
They said this morning. It is 5am now. I hope it is "just" deep muscel tissue damage. That hurts but you recover in 4-6 weeks.
Anyhow, I will find out one way or another.
Better log off so I have battery to call work
-
Hoping for the best outcome.
-
Best wishes to your girl, Sir.
-
Thanks guys. Not a fun night but then that is part of being Dad. I'd do it again any night of the week.
Good news is that she doesn't have anything wrong other than deep tissue damage. I have had that before, myself, so she has my sympathies.
She is out of hospital. I got some needed sleep. Will do the work thing tomorrow.
More than a little relieved.
-
She might have microfractures though, which (I think) rarely show up on xrays.
Make her take things easy for a month or two, and she should be fine.

Thanks Shleed. She is a tough kid. Not much of her. She will be sore for a while.
If this is the worst experience I will have to endure as a parent, I will count myself as lucky, as much fun as it wasn't.
Appreciate your words.

Its all good mate.
I think the main thing that bothered me with this is that I expected more out of Odeon and Hell, perhaps I have simply had higher expectations than reasonable. I felt very much a sense of him trying to play me. I was insulted a little at the thought. Very indignant. Not only was I being told what I was doing when I was not doing what I was accused of BUT he was trying to sell me a poor lie.
It rankled me. Like his "tutoring" it came across as him (for whatever reasons of his own) trying to sell a weak narrative ABOUT me and expect me to vacantly nod my head and agree to it. Me not being able to see through it and expecting others to agree.
Now this may not have been what happened. But that is what got me fired up. I do expect that conduct from some others but not him. I was indignant and insulted and sure as Hell was not going to let this narrative pushing be simply a "difference of opinion" or even be a viable option.
"Al is shit. Don't you agree? You don't agree that you are shit? Oh well, we all have different opinions on things". That is why I pushed so hard. It did not look like the kind of thing Odeon would say and I wanted to get to the bottom of why. I did not want the answer to be, "Odeon felt like making baseless and weak accusations at me and then would seek to try to condescend to me by playing tutor for no good reason and would be surprised that I latched onto him.
Its not so much out of character as a bad combination of elements. My general mood is only one element in the equation.
-
I'm sorry to be adding to the curveballs, Al. I was not trying to play you, or insult you (even though I do understand that what I said might be insulting anyway). I regret the rather clumsy rephrasing I did (all that pretence stuff) and do agree that I should have done it better. I took me some time to get to what I actually wanted to say, I think, and I am sorry for that because it added to the insult.
I did perceive you as rather unreasonable at times, which contributed to some of my grumpiness. That "tutoring" thing is an example of that, a reaction. I'm not above being a jerk either.
So regardless of the argument, I am sorry. I don't feel good about it because I don't like to hurt my friends.

Thanks.
Its unfortunate that even now you are telling me that I knowingly misrepresented someone.
Odeon, if I did something "knowingly", doesn't that give rise to me having to both be aware of it and be an active participant in bringing about that "misrepresentation"? I don't think there is much grey area. If you do something knowingly you are both knowing you are doing it and with intent.
Now whether you are even doing that thing (which I am sure as Hell not conceding because I do not know the instance and I am not going to nod without examining the situation - for all I know that is BS), IF I was neither deliberately or aware of misrepresenting (if as I say it was misrepresented at all), then how could it be "knowingly".
It sounds to me, correct me if I am wrong (and tell me this is not an extension of tutoring) that you are telling me what I was thinking, my intent, my motivation, and trying to make me aware of what my own motivations, thought and intents were, AND stating them as facts, without having the slightest idea, nor without proof of knowing what I was thinking/knowing/aware/realising?
If you are doing this, and building a narrative by which you are aware of what I think, or can retroactively change my intent to be what intent and motive you want me to think, to mold into your premise of intellectual dishonesty AND (despite my constant assertions that I did not think what you would have had me think), then is this action an Honest, dishonest, intellectually honest or intellectually dishonest response?
Can you see why this kind of thing would still rankle me?
-
Al, if you don't read his posts but still reply and attempt to tell us what he is saying, then you are misrepresenting him, and doing it knowingly because the only way you could possibly actually know what he is going to say is by reading him.
Or you could be incredibly lucky and guess right, but that didn't happen.

See the peanut gallery thread about us.
But I just realised that my phrasing, above, seems to imply that you did read him. That wasn't what I meant. See that other thread for an explanation of the "knowingly".

Regardless those examples were not examples, so if you COULD provide examples, that would be great. Those examples if anything showed the opposite of what I asked you to show a case for what you were saying.

This could go in the Medical Geeks thread, but (I don't want to offend you but I am really curious) what was it like when you had a heart attack? Did you know what it was straight away? Was there anyone around to help you?
Heart stuff interests me - I can't take a certain med because it affects my heart and I get ectopic beats fairly often.
Do you have to take meds since the attack? Look after yourself more? That I hope you do. ;)

I had been pretty ill and very stressed.
I'd been waking up with heart pain nightly for months. I was too stressed over other stuff to glide it much mind.
When I had my heart attack, it was different. It was a lot worse.
I was by myself and it was early morning. After a few hours of pain, I drove to hospital.
They kept me overnight but I felt a bit better in the morning and bailed (signed myself out). I overdid things and collapsed a few hours later at a friend's place.
It took months for me to get back to "normal".
My immunity system was knocked hard. I caught swine flu, pneumonia and glandular fever within that 12 months.
I had a septic gall bladder out that put a lot of strain on my body (to the point doctor said I had about 3 weeks to live).
I came good.
-
Glad you are ok now. Your friends took care of you? The gall bladder situation sounds alarming.
I had swine flu too, but it was very mild.
-

Yup I was housebound for about a week and Sidelined from working for about 3 weeks. I was in pretty bad shape. Jaundiced, a lot of fluid retention and swelling, trouble breathing, profusely sweating and labouring doing anything and next to no energy.
I know it sounds stupid, but I had of course been sick in the past. A bad cough or cold and I would ride it out and recover quickly. I was not "used" to being really sick. I had nothing to gauge it off. Because I had some big stressors in my life, it was an inconvenience. If I was waking up in pain in my chest, I blamed indigestion and all it meant to me is that I was being robbed of sleep that I needed desperately in order to wake up in a four or five hours to go to work. Time managing pain was time I could be sleeping. I have a high pain threshold and would "walk it off", then collapse exhausted and fall into sleep was it abated.
I was young and lucky

She is reasonably funny but the amount of humour she produces has fallen by about the same amount and degree as her Hollywood star has risen.
She took on woman weekly or one of those woman _centric Aussie gossip magazines and smashed for slander which is excellent.
I remember her in Fat Pizza, a real un-PC series on ABC.She was good.

That's on a yearly basis and an average (do they count underage people??).
Personally, I drink anywhere between .5L to 1L of pure alcohol per week.
I guess that turns out to almost 50L per year?? :dunno:

Yes that is simply dividing the number of humans in NT by the amount of pure alcohol. Given the propensity of Northern Territorians to drink beer, that is a shitload of bear each year and far more than 15 liters to get to the pure alcohol level. But yes that is inclusive of kids and teetotalers

Who is the guy in the avatar? How long are you in Thailand for?
I am going for a week.
Al Swearengen is the guy in the avatar. He is a VERY interesting character in Deadwood. He is the antagonist to Seth Bullock. He is the controlling force in Deadwood and a murdering pimp and gangster with a very defined set of values and helps support, protect and grow the Western town whilst he simultaneous exploits it and financially enriches himself off it. Hehates Seth and yet seeks to defend and support his role as Sheriff.
Great series.

Hey Al, why the Chipmunk? None of them here in Australia. Plus how have you been? How's work?
Works is pretty intense at the moment. I am being pulled in too many directions and ultimately feel like i am failing everyone a little. Just too busy.
Chipmunk because Walkie said she though i looked a little like a chipmunk so i thought, "Why not?"
More importantly how are you.
-
Well, you have the cheeks when you smile, heh. :zoinks:
Retail is so busy this time of year. I volunteer at the Salvos twice a week and it's getting hectic. No sooner are items put on the shelves, are people buying them.
I've also been dealing with NDIS stuff. They want a lot of information. Thankfully I have my plan now. It was reasonably quick how it was done.
-
Yes i think franticness extends into every workplace before Christmas. I have a bit of time off. One of my mates has just split up from a long time girlfriend and will be alone and another has a Dad dying of Cancer, so i will be dividing my time a little.

That's really nice of you being there for your mates.

In the case of at least one, going to the pub, playing playstation and drinking gog will not be much of an imposition
