Tom Cruise: I fancied a change of avatar and i had just watched Magnolia, so it seemed like a good idea. He's a great actor; he seems to have a lot of haters nowadays, but apart from the scientology nonsense, he seems like a decent guy to me.

Well im 36yo, i'm a mathematician. I used to teach then worked for the government. I won more money playing cards and gambling, than my wage so was happy to take redudancy. I don't work no more, unless you count the time i spend gambling, which is a lot and is hard work sometimes.
Ive nothing to show for my life, whatever that means, ive never been married, have no children. Im a misanthropist.
Ive had 'problems' with amphetamines and then pain killers. I don't touch them now, but drink too much.

Not a professor, just a B.A and M.A.
I taught some introductory courses (linear algebra, real analysis and algebra) for undergraduates at Oxford for a year.
Did some private tuition for A-Level students (don't know the US equivalent, but 17&18yos ).
After that i did a teacher training course and taught in a high-school for a few months. It was awful, that's when i gave up teaching.
The private tuition was ok though. So it's something i could always go back to if i go broke.

I don't doubt it, but it's just a label isn't it. It will probably be called something else in 10 or 20 years time. I don't really understand what it means when it says 'Have Aspergers - Diagnosed'. I mean, not all these doctors agree you know, ive had a few diagnoses ( first time i saw a doctor there was no such thing as aspergers, he just gave me some prozac and that seemed to work). The last guy i saw said i had AS, but he is an expert in the field, so he would say that wouldn't he ?

I am calmer now.
I wouldn't say i fantasize about being able to communicate better, i have tried to improve my skills in the past. But now i realize it's just something i am terrible at. Everyone is good and bad at certain things, i can't complain with 'my lot.'

Yes, I have been to Vegas a few times, but nowhere else in the USA.
I've seen Benny & Joon about 5 years ago, i thought it was a nice film. I thought it was similar to 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape?', which i think came out at around the same. Have you seen that ? One of Leondardo diCaprio's first films. I don't think he can act nowadays, but he is great in that.
I like Johnny Depp, he's fantastic in The Libertine & Ed Wood.

I have both those movies. I can remember my mother renting the Gilbert Grape one when I was 8 or 9 and I can remember asking "Mom what's wrong with that guy?" pointing at Leanardo and she said "He retarded."
So I had the wrong impression that all retarded people climb water towers and they are hyper and they found their fists on the table and they always get covered in dirt. Took me a while to figure out they are not all like that and they are all different.
I didn't see Benny & Joon till I was 15 when it was on TV but I only saw parts of it and then sat down and watched it when they were in the hospital to see Joon. I didn't see the whole movie till I was 17, I remember how much Joon scared me because of her behavior but my obsession started after seeing it again on TV the next day when it was on again.

I've not really seen it for a long time, and when i watched it i had not heard of aspergers. So i don't really know. I would have to say i think he was just weird.
I don't like to classify people in terms of whether they have AS or HFA or Schizophrenia or NT or whatever.

I first went to Vegas in 1998 i think.
I've always enjoyed gambling and I used to play a lot of cards, so Vegas is the place to go.
There is a history to the place, but it doesn't go back very far, about 1910 i think and involves a lot of seedy characters, so there are no old buildings.
Been a couple of times since but not for a few years. I was going to go this summer, i was getting paid to play poker and was trying to get some sort of deal to play in vegas while the world series was on. But things fell through, i stopped getting paid and haven't played card since.
I have heard Vegas has changed a lot since i last went.

Im not keen on purple coloured lights though. My PC has a purple colour light on the front. So it used to really annoy me when it was dark, or the first thing i saw in the morning was this piercing purple light ( i rarely turn the machine off - usually just standby). Anyway, i stuck a piece of cardboard over it.

I've not noticed. I have one in the kitchen and i cant hear that, the fridge is louder.
But some of the larger ones in the corridors and stairway i can hear ( i live in an apartment block). They don't bother though, except when they start to break down and start flickering.

That was the biggest event ive played in with my own money.

Ive stayed there before ( well deposited clothes in a friends room, had a shower and a kip for a few hours - not really stayed).

It was a package deal through Expedia. I compared just the flight vs. flight + hotel, and the Binions deal came out to just $20 more. So, we went for it. It was recently actually, the week of the 4th of July.

I used to have a few backers before i started playing mainly on the internet.
Ive had some deals with some websites too, but the latest one cut my pay by nearly 50% about six months ago. So i stopped playing since the games were dead and not worth playing in just for the winnings ( in fact i was struggling to break even for last three months of play).

They hadn't invented asperger syndrome when i went there. But i suspect at least two of my tutors had it.

I was pushed into it when writing my UCAS, there is a box you tick for ASD's. I was advised it would be a qualification apparently. Other things went wrong as well, like me not being well at all and having to go to interview in agony. I had been told I was a dead cert Oxbridge pretty much by all my teachers before that.

I was pushed into it when writing my UCAS, there is a box you tick for ASD's. I was advised it would be a qualification apparently. Other things went wrong as well, like me not being well at all and having to go to interview in agony. I had been told I was a dead cert Oxbridge pretty much by all my teachers before that.

Hmm, I am waiting for my A-level results but it will be somewhere very prestigous still, i am just mega disappointed though, it is pretty simple for them to recognise I was pretty ill and offer me a place anyway, if i had gone to private school they would have done that. Any good poker player knows you by your second or third bluff. You can fool some at first, but only the best get to the pot, consistently.

If you show that you know you can get off too soon then the betting will also end too soon. It pays to look worried at first, no matter how good your chances are.

I just meant that I studied expression as if I was Obsessive Compulsive in order to improve my portrait photography. If you can read when people are trying to fool you with their expressions, then you would probably make a decent poker player.

That is very true about the joker face. In fact, some expert players have this joker persona which can be a good image to have.
As long as the facial expressions are completely random to the cards dealt and betting, etc then yes. But this would be hard to do. i wouldn't recommend trying it.

I agree with what you say, but i think you are over-valuing this aspect of the game. There comes a point when you will not get many signals from reading players facial expressions. Most casino regulars who play 40+ hours a week are not giving much away, in this respect.
But against beginners and some more social players then being a good reader will be a quicker way to destroy them rather than just outplaying them.
Obviously there are other body language tells other than just facial expressions.
I would reccommend reading Caro's Book Of Tells, i think there are dvds and videos of it as well. Most probably you have read it already, but if you play it is essential reading.

Yes, i would consider myself a very good reader of people. Although only when observing others.
As soon as i interact myself ( either by listening or talking) then i stop being able to notice body language cues.

i know everyone says the game is easy but i suck at card games. i only ever play go fish. i don't learn the rules easily. i'm kinda dyscalculic.

The reason it would be to your disadvantage is that while you may be fooling your opponent with ambiguous facial expressions, you have to be interpreting your opponent's expressions at the same time, while they are trying to fool you. I think aspies with any kind of problems reading faces lose that contest every time. I can't cite any data, but I am a decent poker player and the game has a lot to do with facial reading, especially during the betting segments of the game. I have no problems with faces.

Ah i see, yes it's a possibility. There are a few very good players which have facial tics and some weird expressions.
So yes, a poker face does not necessarily mean a completely blank stone-face expression. So long as you don't start blinking or ticking more when you are bluffing, for example.

i had AA v KK and QQ in the first hand of a 50 quid tournie about ten years ago.
Its a terrible fold BTW with KK ( the commentator says it was great - it's hard to tell with these poker players whether they are being sarcastic or not - lol - in fact it's more likely that the KK guy is cheating and is in collusion with the AA man )
Ive folded QQ before a few times, but the way people play nowadays it's an instant call unless you know your man.

But, in this case i think it is a no-brainer.
Starbuline is a nice young woman and i think she would gain benefit from the advice of many people on this forum. However, there are laws of the internet and planet Earth which must be adhered to ( given by the ISP - child porn etc.) When she is 18 she would be welcomed, until then it is ridiculous to blame anyone personally.

Knut is good. Never figured out if his name was pronounced 'nut'? Blood Simple is very good. Bought it for my sister a few years back, must steal it back for another look!
Really like Barton Fink. For me the characters, the dialogue, the Art Deco sets etc are so interesting, so maybe the story is kind of secondary. dunno.
I enjoyed 'the Ladykillers' though given that I haven't seen the orginal Guinness/Sellers one. Fargo's great.

The Ladykillers is maybe the exception to the remake rule. When I saw it I didnt know it was a remake 50's original starring the great chameleonic talents of Peter Sellers and Alex Guinness. However I would have seen it anyway because I don't avoid anything by the Coens.

Yeah maybe. The acid lasts a lot longer though - you would need a few Es - i wouldnt want to be tripping with a bad comedown, at the best of times; not really a problem though.

Mine are Irlen lenses, specially made that colour to filter certain colours so I don't get headaches and they also make it easier to read.
I am sensitive to green/yellow light. Some shades of yellow can make me feel sick to my stomach.

Some people have asked me if I see everything with a tinge of purple. I don't, I see everything in normal colour, just a bit darker, that's all. That is why the Irlen testing takes a few hours, to make sure I see in normal colour through the tint. I didn't pick purple, it just turned out that way. :)

I've been to Spain, Netherlands, Germany, Austria & France. I thought the French people were the nicest. Very reserved, but they actually went out of their way to help me when I needed it. They act like they actually give a damn about other people, which is more than I could say for most of the Germans. I could easily imagine living in France.

That is weird, the Germans were much more friendly to me than the French, several went out of their way to give directions and one guy even bought us beer. Maybe I just hung around really friendly Germans that were drunk most of the time. The French were ok, but the Swiss people I met though seemed a little shady. Both the Swiss and French would lie and say they do not speak English, while the Germans seemed more honest in regards to preference of language. I didn't expect people to speak English anyways, even though some of the areas are pretty much tourist heavy in traffic. The people in Southern France (Buene specifically) were much more friendly than those in Paris. Everyone in Paris was going somewhere and in more of a hurry. That is to be expected of large cities though.

I have not really had much contact with Germans to make a comment. They seem to have a bad reputation with English people, maybe this is something to do with the war ( Basil Fawlty :zoinks:), which obviously is completely stupid.
The Dutch people i have met have been friendly and laid-back.
Parisians tend to be stand-offish and ive seen them pretend not to comprehend English when I have heard them speak it to me. I think if they see that you are making an effort, then they will parlez-vous Anglais with you. A way of filtering out the English lager lout chav tourist, also providing amusement for the Parisians.

I went to Germany and Austria to visit friends, and their crowds were very nice to me (aside from the requisite anti-American commentary and jokes). But when I was off on my own, I noticed the people in general didn't seem very friendly. It was so funny in Germany, because I look German and people would come up to me and just start talking away. I didn't know German when I first started going there, and so I'd just shrug and start giggling because I was embarrassed. That usually pissed them off, but I just couldn't help it! :laugh: So yeah...maybe I provoked them just a little! ::)
