Title: What did you do yesterday?
Post by: odeon on March 29, 2014, 02:43:44 AM
I'm constantly feeling left out by the "What have you done today" thread. I log on here in the morning and haven't done anything beyond waking up and making coffee. And a quick shower, maybe. It's unfair and unreasonable and I feel left out.

Well, no more.

Yesterday, I worked as usual but left the office early because I had a migraine. Stress-related, I'm sure, because the headache went away after a few hours at home.

I later watched a Top Gear episode while enjoying a nice ale from Fuller's. I also stumbled across a documentary about Steve Jobs that was about as factual as a Gospel Channel programme. The same basic message, too.

Did you feel saved, when it ended?

I dyed the hair of the youngest purple, yesterday evening.
Earlier in the day I got myself to work, after getting kid out to school. Worked short, because working almost the whole day the day before proved itself to be too much.
Read a bit in "the hare with the amber eyes" in the evening.

Well, I get paid by my employer, so when talking at a conference, they pay for my time. They don't usually pay for me writing the papers, though. It's complicated.

None of which matters. I can procrastinate massively when writing, regardless of the pay. It's in the nature of the job. Ask any writer.

Yep. I would love to get paid though.

Was having a look at my first uni essays yesterday (a form of procrastinating) and they aren't too bad. Referencing stinks but the general writing is ok. I have learnt so much about referencing since then.

Yesterday - Sunday  (ignoring the fact that it is 1am and really am talking about the day before yesterday)

It was Mother's Day.  Had lunch at The Hungry Horse with my Mum and two brothers.  Afternoon spent with the urchin doing some robin hooding.  The urchin was then swiftly bathed and in bed early ready for school.   Naughty few hours with Mr Lurch.

Oh and much  :tigger:

At least it helps a bit that the three of us were aware that that was what was causing the fuck-up.  :P

Yesterday was the first day in about seven months that the ground was NOT frozen below a foot deep!

I actually turned over about a third of my garden yesterday.

IN two days I will have the entire day off from work. It is supposed to be well above freezing. I plan to finish cultivating certain areas in preparation for spring planting and dig some manure into certain other parts that I had neglected during the fall.

If I have an ounce of forfeiture to use, I will be exhausted tomorrow evening, but my garden will be that much more ready for planting.

I went shopping with the oldest.  :GA: :GA: :GA: :GA:

We both hate shopping, but sometimes garments to cover a body and keep it warm have to be bought. Best of the shopping was the break we took with a drink, leaned against a tree in a small city park. The city we went to has lots of parks to escape to. Book shop was not bad either, and the ice-cream at Talamini was delicious. So, we did survive, and she did manage to get herself a set of clothes.

Visit the dentist with the young ladies. He checked all of us, fixed what needed fixing for the daughters, and asked me to make a new appointment for myself.
Youngest got the same verdict I got as a kid, she's got a set of teeth that easily will get cavities.  :(
Of course, she is the kid that is the most precise in brushing her teeth. The world is not fair.
Genetics sucks.

When I was 20, my dentist told me it was only my thorough brushing of teeth, that had kept me from having dentures, now almost thirty years later, I still have my own teeth, but no molar without fillings.

Oh well, the damage in me was not that big, this time, but it will need fixing. Replacement of a filling, and two very small cavities between the teeth.

Went for coffee (I hate saying that but when I say "going for tea" people assume I mean eating out at a restaurant) then to Wheterspoons (a relativity quiet and really nice bar)

Thankfully, no hangover (even though she had one)

Through my drunkeness I nearly proposed marriage, but stopped myself at the last moment.

Waited for an email too, but that did not come.

Spent another few hours comparing VPS hosts. I found what seemed like a great one but it turned out they don't allow boobs on their servers.

No boobies!  How could anyone have a problem with boobies!  Do they have special booby servers for all the booby sites?

Visit to the doctor with other kid. Yay, another infection in the head. Bloody lasting cold with complications.
Went to school to clear lockers of both kids, and then went to work, pretending to be active.

Nah, the last is a lie. There were things that needed doing that required not much energy. It was repetitive, I could sit down all the time, maybe even mesmerising and I got done the job that needed doing. So, all good. Did not feel like work though. Also because I had to leave things undone that needed doing by me. Having a conversation in the mean time about gardening was pleasant.

Got through a crisis at home in the evening alive. We even had a pleasant evening after the double meltdown had passed.

I always honk at cyclists when I approach from behind them. It is for their own safety that I make them aware that I am about to "run them over" for obstructing legitimate traffic; traffic which actually pays with taxes to build and maintain the streets those cyclists THINK they own.

I know, the great majority of cyclists also drive cars, but then, let me insist that while these cyclist, who assume they have a legitimate right to use our streets ALSO follow traffic laws while they are riding and obstructing the lanes they supposedly shared in paying for.

How many times have you seen a cyclist go ripping through a stop light with no regard for the law? I often honk at those guys, too.

Argued with a cyclist who had followed me all the way home because I had dared to honk at him. Poor thing.
Didn't know cyclist got road rage. Have only ever had one person follow me home; that was really creepy. Turned around and followed me, due to being flipped off by a five year old. Followed me home to confront parent and child and demand the spanking he felt was in order. Pointed out that he had just followed a woman alone with two small children to their home in the middle of freaking nowhere, in order to confront with suggestions of violence, and my husband might have a different of opinion as to who required the spanking in that context. He left.

Did hardly use my bike, yesterday.

My country has an infrastructure fit for lots of biking. Racer bikes and elderly speed devils on electrical bikes can be a big problem when the weather gets a bit better though. There are thoughts on changing the infrastructure because of this. Wonder if that will happen.

I'd like to think that ours is reasonably good, too. The problem here is that the racer bikes seem to think they own the roads.

About ten percent of them seem to behave like morons indeed. Only caring about speed, so proud of their powerful image that they do not even want a bell on their bike, because it ads to the weight.

Other kings of the road are the cyclists who cannot make it without electrical support, and with electrical support they feel themselves to be the emperors of the road. The newer versions of those bikes go bloody fast, with drivers having no idea how to deal with that speed relatively slow bicycle lanes.

Yesterday I walked a little over 10 kilometres because it kept on pouring down with rain. Endlessly so. See, I don't drive a car and ja, groceries/stuff needed to be bought.

Kinda like walking in the rain.. with my umbrella, that is.

Oooh, I walked cos my mountainbike/ATB doesn't have fenders.. plus, on such a bike it's almost impossible to properly hold an umbrella above your head/body. Especially with heavy winds most of the time.

Fixed two mowers (inlaws), one they said scrap because it was too old, wheels bowed etc.

Fixed the scrap one last, carb cleaned, gasket, cleaned filter, straightened the wheels out and cut half the hillside with it that's not too steep...left it up top under a tree and a tarp to save me from dragging it up the hill every week.

Pulled weeds.

Tjah, maar deze jongen, met een totally fucked-up interne thermostaat, haat de broeierige warmte die regenpakken met zich mee brengen. Zelfs de goed ademende.. vind ik poep.

I tend to wear a t-shirt outside even on quite cold days. Daytime Ts above 22C.. well, it depends.. this body hardly can cope with.

Saw it, it made me angry.

Wat een zeurpiet inderdaad, en wat een volslagen wereldvreemde ouders.

Dedicating their whole life to avoid any inconvenience for their autistic son, and then finding out at him being 49 that they can't shield him from the world forever. And lo and behold, society isn't willing to pay for him to have a luxurious villa in a luxurious villa for other autistic people.

So, now we know the answer for 49+ old autistic people who have no pampering parents left.  :trainwreck:

They could have used some of his intelligent potential to make him deal with the world and people around him a bit better. But no, the parents did everything to give him any bit of short term luck they could, because autistic people are not capable to be happy.
So, their world, their interests had to stop, the moment he walked into the room, with the wish to get attention.

Was funny though, when the mother said people would not be able to tell their son was autistic any more, because of all the improvements he had made.

^ Yeah, often seeing documentairies about other auties bring me all sorts of emotions.. and anger is nearly always one of them.

Tjah, what to say? My brain offers ten possible takes on how to reply regarding the docu about Kees at the moment. That's never a good thing.. so maybe best to let it sink in for a bit.

But..
Quote
Was funny though, when the mother said people would not be able to tell their son was autistic any more, because of all the improvements he had made.
Hahaha, yes.. my reaction was: 'Nou?!'.. 'Nou!?'.. aloud in front of my TV.

Yestereve I went out on my bike trying to find some comfrey. Went along places where the ground would be wet-ish because that's where the plant could 'hang out'. Found none though. Might make an effort to find any this afternoon or evening again.

I know there are fertilizers, to mix with water, to be bought all over the place but I'd like it to be as natural as possible.. and do it myself.

Yesterday was only 90 minutes ago.

I got through it, despite the heat, and even more a miracle, despite all the bloody noises.

Backdoor neighbour threw a party, for his kid nearly 15. The whole bloody day there were guests, the whole bloody day there was his horrible choice of music at a high volume.
The music was a bit different from other days, because it had more of a carnival/fair vibe added to the flavour.

And all the other neighbours were blasting their music, to get away from the sound from the back of my house. Talking louder than usual, to be able to hear what they were saying/thinking.
Having gone shopping with the ladies might have been less overloading than this. (On hot days like this, shopping streets are empty in the Netherlands)

It is silent now.

Good.

Yesterday, in the afternoon, I went out on my bicycle and headed towards Tholen. Tholen is the name of a small village about 7 kms away from where I reside.. but it's also the name of the peninsula with two handfuls of small villages where people tend to be quite religious.

It was awfully warm yesterday and the thermometer outside stated >30C again. Bet if someone started a vineyard in this region it could produce quite okay wines. Surely a white wine but a proper red one too, I reckon. Might be something I could do.. :lightbulb:

Anyway.. I reached 'their' village centre and settled down on a chair outside on the terrace of a café and ordered myself a coffee and a 'tosti'. A grilled ham and cheese sandwich. Smoked a fag whilst drinking my coffee.. sitting under a large sun screen. My blood's temperature still nowhere near  comfortable.

The cold one can battle easily and 'win' but heat, warm weather, I tend to always lose the battle. I'm unable to getting used to it. I go pale in the process.. feeling.. ja, lousy.. to say the least. Wish I could change this lousy trait.

Cycled on the narrow paths on top of the dikes that protect the village against the water and saw many nice boats in the harbour there. Wish I had that kind of cash to buy me a nice ship. I do not.. and a couple of acres of grape producing land isn't that realistic either.

On my way back I bought myself a soft roll with herring and onion on it, ate it there and then, and a jar with Catalan styley mussels at the small fishmongers in the harbour there. Cycled home and took my second shower of the day.

Went on a bike ride across town (rode continuously in a busy street for the first time), and later went to the library and filled out a volunteer application. The application was online but I thought sitting in the library whilst doing it would be appropriate. Got to redo my resume and both of my references replied willingly within an hour or so, so I didn't have to delay anything.

Also I realised last night that anger (which I had been fearing was going into over drive) has actually been a protective force against dissociation (when overwhelmed/overstimulated). It tends to keep me focused....albeit at times hyper focused on issues which later I decide aren't THAT terrible...but focused and present nonetheless. :P

I have a new appreciation for anger.

Painted one side of a door with it's finale coating yesterday morning. In a bit I'm going to paint the other side. Hallway, on the second floor, already looks quite different. Lighter.

End of next week (I hope) the last new door will arrive. Have to cut/saw 12 millimetres off, than primer and top coat the sucker and put hinges and the lock mechanism in.

Hang a new lamp on the ceiling and than that project is finished.

Did a first room equalisation of the garage. Pretty damned cool.
What's that?

Let's say you have a cinema auditorium with a Dolby Digital processor. You have three screen channels (left, centre, right), two surrounds (left and right surround) and a subwoofer. Something like this:

How these channels actually sound in the auditorium depends on things like the speakers, the power amplifiers feeding the speakers, the room's characteristics, and so on. In other words, it varies depending on lots of things, and unless something is done, no cinema will ever sound like another, which is not what the filmmakers spending millions on good sound mixes want.

This is true whether your auditorium is a 700-seat theatre or a 12-seat garage.

For this reason, Dolby cinema processors include equalisers for each and every channel. Each equaliser will have 1/3 octave controls from roughly 20 Hz to 16 kHz which means that by changing the frequency response for each individual band, you can compensate for the oddities in your particular setup and achieve the sound the filmmaker wanted.

This is done by placing a microphone connected to a real-time analyser (RTA for short) in the auditorium, running pink noise through each channel and then observing the resulting sound curve on the RTA screen. The curve most likely looks like a mess, initially, but can be corrected using the equalisers to something like this:

You will also attempt to change the subwoofer's response to something like this:

Your actual results will, of course, always be a compromise, but I'm sure you get the idea.

In my particular case, my left and right channels are brilliant, the surrounds OK and the sub decent, but the centre sucks, probably because the speaker itself is bad. I' going to replace it and see if I can do a better equalisation of that channel.

You did ask. :P

I should plus you for the mini Stonehenge.

A surround system in a living room actually has the same basic setup as a modern cinema, the difference being that most people won't need two or more subwoofers or 12 surround speakers.

I've seen setups with four or six stacked subwoofers and 24 surround speakers.

I know your probably going to hate me for this. But I have not brushed in about 10 years. I have also drank 8 coke a day for about three of them. To this day I remain cavity free.

Better start brushing anyway, two of my brothers were bad brushers, with very strong teeth. The decay did start somewhere in their early thirties though.

I can't stand the feel of dirty teeth. It is almost impossible to fall asleep with unbrushed teeth for me.

Yesterday I went straight, on a crossing, out of habit. My youngest went left, because that was what we planned to do. So, I drove into her. We both are bruised all over. My bruises are the biggest, but she has the most intense one, right on her shin.
I got her home on the back of my bike, after bending things back to shape and breaking off a spoke, and after picking up debris from my bike from the street. Will have to walk there to fetch her bike later today.

Mine will need quite some work to get it good again. I hope hers is less damaged. Almost all the debris on the street was from my bike.

I now know my daughter is massive and formidable at swearing. The tarmac almost melted below her feet. I felt sorry for her that I did not react on it, beaten and crumbling. I focused on safety, getting her of the road first, and then getting the rest at the side of the road. Her swearing let me know she was overall pretty OK.

We had a pleasant evening after that, despite the stupid accident.

Glad you both are okay, although a little banged up...too many bikes, and bike parts sitting around here. I lost count on how many I picked up this year, too bad you are not closer I'd send you a care package.

Picked up a very nice looking cruiser awhile back it was 1 of 4 at the same place, too big for me though...but then anything beyond a 24" usually is...coffee stunted my growth.

Thanks, collected bike of daughter today, and could fix it completely.
My bike was not the best of bikes anymore. Fixed up too many times. After this fall, I could get it running quite smooth again, but, it seems to have lost its balance, because of having lost it's inner strength.

Think I have to go on the hunt for a replacement.

Girl does not want to use her right foot, she says it hurts through her whole leg if she does. So, will probably visit the GP with her tomorrow. She also has all kinds of flu symptoms, so, could be that enforcing the pain of her hurt shinbone.

What's a LAC?
Local Area Coordinator. She works for the Disability Services Commission. Each LAC covers a part of the town/city where I live and provides services for those with disabilities.

Shortly after I started receiving services, the DSC changed it so that only autistics with intellectual disabilities as well could receive services from them. So they don't have many people like me on their books any more.

I met my parents at the shops, they came all the way from Collie. Had a coffee with them and my aunty and uncle, was really nice. Then went with my parents to shop for shoes, (them, not me). My mum found some really cool black and purple sneakers (we were in a sports shop). Then we went for a long drive to find a replica of the house they are building. It was the same, except mirror image. My mum has also made a few changes to the plan (why would a linen cupboard need a window?) and I like it. Just a shame they live so far away.

We then went to Subway and I had a salad roll (no meat) which is unusual for me but what I felt like. Then my parents took me back to where my car was parked (at the shops) and we said goodbye. I hope to see them again when my uni exams are over.

 :2thumbsup:

Thank you, for that.

Not sure if any of you know that about six weeks ago, I was still heavy lifting despite my doctor/surgeon's wishes and we both feel that such has stalled my recovery from earlier surgery to replace my hip joint with a prosthesis joint.

(One would have to be desperate and in constant pain to do this! I was.)

These days, my job only requires lifting small boxes of CDs and  DVDs. Not so much torture on this old man.

Everyone tells me that they would HATE to have to do my job, but they just do not get it.
NOW, I basically live in my own "little" world and most of the time I am left alone to do the  best I can at more brainwork than lifting and shuffling huge things around.

I do OK at brain work. I can read many times more easily and more quickly that most people I have encountered.
I will do fine in this new position, assuming, of course, that I am continually left alone to actually do my work.

Got through.

Depression in the house makes that sometimes all we seem to achieve is to get through the day.

In actions; made a really short bike trip with one daughter, her hip is recovering nicely, some movement is needed. Worked a bit in garden with other girl, and went for a longer bike trip with her. Cooked a nice meal.

In the mean time, tempered outbursts, motivated, told off, hugged, tried to keep things calm. Succeeded a bit.

Best bit, got girl to remove a silly game from her pad, that enraged her more and more every time she played it. She was relieved when she got rid of it.

Read a few things about the horses in the Melbourne Cup which was on Tuesday. Took Ceilidh to therapy. Came home and rang my mum and had a nice long talk with her. Picked Ceilidh up. Got a phone call about seeing a psych on the 18th which is at the same place Ceilidh goes. I am wondering what it will be about.

Me, my son and a friend of mine drove to Copenhagen (Denmark) and back to watch a 70mm presentation of the film "Interstellar". 8 hours in the car, 5 in Copenhagen of which 3 in the theatre. All in all, money and time well spent. :)

Got through.

Had to take leave or therapist. (My psychological health is too good....) Alas, he was good.

Survived an angry meltdown of kid. She got a new one within ten minutes. So then I had a roaring crying meltdown too.

We got kid to do something else than selfharming.

Was pretty exhausted at the end of that day. Nearly fell of the stairs, and thought I would not mind if I had fallen down and broken my neck.

At least my psychological health is fine.  :tard:

Got WolFish a place at an extended stay nearby, so he could have a proper vacation out of the house after having to deal with his mother. We cooked a tiny turkey (well, half of it) in a toaster oven. Flattened down, it looked like a frog. Had dinner at a table with place settings and everything. It was good.

Went to an "ouderavond" at school. Talked to five teachers. Pleasant talks, all of them, even when the subject was not always that pleasant.

It does warm my parental heart when teachers say that my kid is such a pleasure to have in class.

My aspie kid melts teacher hearts. It is a talent of hers. She has done it since second class of kindergarten. She just knows how to wrap up obnoxious in a cute way.

I think I finally crashed from exhaustion.  As I was leaving a store I suddenly felt achey all over and disoriented.  Went straight to the apartment and went to bed.  Within 30 minutes I had a 101 degree fever and severe chills.  PA called up the doctor and got a flu prescription.  By the time he was back the fever was falling.  Within about 5 hours I was still achey, but felt much better.  I'll continue the flu med, just in case.

Ok so yesterday, umm,  yesterday what the heck did i do?
Oh yeah, i radically overslept as usual (it being the day after weekly-shopping day)
Then I had some breakfast and rested until it took effect.
Then I procrastinated awhile.
Then I posted here, I think (OK, that comes under "procrastinating awhile" but I don't like to sound like a total waste-of -space. Err, hang on, who am I fooling?)
Then I did the previous day's washing up, in two sessions.
Then I made a dinner, of sorts and ate it.
Then I fell asleep.

I agree, it is fun. While we were colouring a few people stopped to have a closer look at what we were doing.

Tucked in one kid sick, coaxed the other to school. Went to school myself, for a very constructive talk with the coordinator for kids who need support. Very pleased about that. She suggested more options than I would dream to ask for.
Got kid brought to me for not feeling well, right after that talk.

Walked to the inner city with her, to catch the bus, with a detour via her dad's place, to have a cup of coffee and give her older sister a bit more time home alone.

Went home, catered oldest, took a short nap on the couch, and then got invaded by two teens who could not enter their house because of a silly mistake of their mother. Good bunch of teens though. And the distraction was well timed.

Then was knackered and cooked a simple but tasty spaghetti meal.

Watched a bit of TV, knitted a little and slept well.

Years ago lived near a Stoner Lane; the street sign was always missing. Every time a new one would get put up; it would disappear within the week. Once they even put it up on a really high pole, about twice the height of a regular street sign. Didn't do any good. They finally just gave up.

Oooh, a fridge. What sort is it, and is it a fridge/freezer? Is it one of those fancy ones with stainless steel doors?
Title: Re: What did you do yesterday?
Post by: odeon on March 26, 2015, 12:15:04 AM
It's a freezer/fridge combo, just an ordinary white, basic model. We need an extra one.

The fancy steel doors on some are sort of cool but cost a fortune. I also saw one that looked like it was clad in denim.

My parents have one of those stainless steel ones. It is a fridge on one side and a freezer on the other. It attracts fingerprints. I know the need of needing a new freezer. Ceilidh and I came home from shopping one day to find that we needed more freezer space. So we went out and bought a small upright freezer. This way, Ceilidh can have a whole drawer of just ice blocks. I haven't known anyone to love eating ice blocks like she does.

Yesterday after I picked up Ceilidh from therapy, we we went and ate at Dome, went to the chemist to buy meds and bought a hoodie each from Rivers.

Went to a fine cheese shop yesterday, I did. The luxury food store is located in a small village named Halsteren a couple of kilometers north from my house. The weather was fine and on my bike I went. Bought myself a piece of genuine Parmesan cheese, a piece of the nicest, I know, Feta cheese around and a small-ish piece of creamy Brie. Um, set me back a little over €12 but it's worth it for the store has top quality cheeses (and nuts, chocolate stuff, wines, etc.. ).

Am now eating a 'slice' of the Brie on a piece of toast. It's überly nice.

You heal rapidly from bruising by operations. Happy for you.

After my gall-bladder op, I had to take a few weeks extra to recover, because everything was blue. (I bruise easily).

Why not, ren?

As for me, I had a really great day yesterday, absolutely fanfuckingtastic in fact.

My next door neighbors, one of their pairs of folks, not the girl, but her b/f's parents came over from denmark to see them, and they'd got a BBQ going, so I offered to share some steaks, if they'd find space after cooking their own food over the coals for me to toss a couple on for myself, I'd share some more of them with them. They said sure I could, but were quite happy with their own food,  so didn't take the steak offer. Still, were fine with me cooking my own. Hadn't had BBQ for like 15 years or more at least.

So I did buy them some ice-pops, though by way of a small gift. Just a token of my appreciation, and they are nice people anyhow. Came over to join them, and we had a good time. One of the two neighbors themselves, the guy, offered to pull a cold beer out of the fridge for me. I already had beer, but I accepted that, and gave him one of my pint cans so he wasn't out of pocket. His weren't that big,but he didn't realize that or ask for one of mine in return, I just was happy to give him one anyhow, and they shared some of their BBQed bangers with me too, we all had a good time sat round the picnic table, outside in their garden, had a good time chatting and chomping, slapped 6 big juicy prime cuts of beef down on the grill, over the coals and got them sizzling and juicy in no time, compared to frying them as I usually do. Really tasty, did them with a bit of worcestershire sauce and my  special spice mix.

I make my own spice blend, to a personally invented recipe especially for doing steak, and use it sometimes in chili con carne too. (if anyone wants the recipe, its pink peppercorns [Schinus berries, a species of sumac, not a true member of the pepper family nor of the chili tribe, they aren't hot at all, but rather have an aromatic, resinous kind of flavor, a slight bite upon the tongue when one is chewed but its far more oene of flavor than anything having the slightest thing in common with heat or any kind of peppers], black pepper, a modest pinch of sea salt, chili peppers, red, dried, deprived of their internal ribs and seeds if using really fiery ones, the batch I made last just used moderately spicy ones, then there is sczechuan pepper,a chinese spice that comes from  the seed-cases of some oriental plant, I don't know what, having no heat, rather, cooling, icy, slightly menthol like but overall WEIRD effects upon the mouth when chewed whole, a numbing, local anaesthetic-like effect; whilst they really are not very similar at all the closest analogy I could come up with is cardamom, with a more mentholly but not minty effect on the mouth and tongue, mixed with a bit of lidocaine or cocaine, or benzocaine or the like, whilst having no stimulant cocaine like effect if thats the analogy used, merely the local anaesthetic effects...strange weird fuckers, oddest spice I've ever had dealings with. Then there are a few cubebs, Piper cubeba, deprived of their stalks, these are a true member of the pepper family, and lastly but not at all leastly, the two most important ingredients being peppery boletus (Chalciporus piperatus) and the fly agaric mushroom, this one is poisonous unless prepared correctly, by curing it in the oven over the lowest flame possible overnight, propping the door open to permit the evaporation and escape of moisture, the mushrooms are best stripped of stalk and gills as the former is tough and not so tasty at all as the caps, the valued part, and the gills contain a lot of moisture so it helps avoid them getting sloppy etc. Dry on baking foil sheets on trays turning every so often to make sure escaping juices get recirculated upon to the mushroom caps again. the gills can be removed best by slicing lengthways along the axis from cap edge to stalk with a sharp blade, removing the bulk of them, I then even them up by scraping sidewaysuntl the result is the cap tissue, after first scraping off the warts from the veil. The peppery boletes are not toxic, and grow as parasites upon the subterranean mycelium of the fly agaric, and so can be found often when one finds fly agaric:)

Ren...how about just one ;) teehee...thats certainly something I could admire:)

As for me...workup, workup, workup.

And more sodding workup. I hate post-rxn cleanup duty, it sucks.

Read a research journal article that implies what I got was not methamphetamine, but a mixture of a symmetrical diether whereby pseudoephedrine dehydrated and condensed with a second molecule of pfed losing the beta-OH and linking up as an ether of pfed with pfed. The other secondary product if there was much formed will be pseudo, minus the beta-OH, having eliminated to the beta-gamma alkene.

Intriguingly it appears that at least one of these compounds is indeed an active psychostimulant, as confirmed by yours truly, by means of biological activity in-vivo. Tested some, quick and dirty extraction into aqueous phase, plugged after basing to neutral-slightly basic. w/ sodium bicarbonate. Results seem positive although only one trial has been performed thus far. Had 8 hours to kill before picking up a repeat prescription, so my bad knee was aching something bastardly. Taking unreacted feedstock would have made me ill, miserable and overloaded, but this did not happen, instead that 8 hours FLEW by, redosed a smaller amount a couple of hours before I had to go out, and DAMN, I was flying wired, bouncing off the walls.

So it seems like despite the different outcome to what was sought (I.e reduction of the feedstock to meth) it nevertheless is not a loss afterall, which I'm quite pleased about, especially since I sank a bit more than a half ounce of pseudo into the reaction.

Spent the day listening to talks while preparing my presentation. This one was my most well-prepared in a while--I've done the whole presentation about a dozen time during breaks and in the hotel room.

Also went to a birthday party--the SGML standard that is the foundation of WWW was finalised 30 years ago. Lots of old and grumpy markup geeks were present. :)

Well today I hope to finally get round to finishing up the workup on that bisulfite attempted reduction of PFED. Needs doing, and I want to get the goods crystallizing so I can both run chemical and chromatographic analyses upon the result, plus proper known-dose bioassays.

Worked, and did daffy things that showed the frazzled state of my brain after 13 straight days
working with my moody, sarcastic, negative, petty-minded boss.  Went looking all around
the front of the kitchen for the box of plastic wrap that was literally right in front of me.  :autism:
Ditzy stuff like that.  It wasn't the schedule, so much as the stress of trying to get everything done
in a limited time frame while seething over snide remarks and eyerolls that my boss already forgot.

Went out for the afternoon, a rare occurence these days.  The occasion was that my son has his Norweigian friend over for a visit (they are mutually "not in love" , wrt which that old 10cc song comes to mind ) so a friend of mind (with whom i am really not in love, mutually. we've just known each other for 40-odd years, and he's practically part of the family by now)  had the really nice idea of driving us all to Stratford-upon-Avon for afternoon tea.   ("You won't like this idea..." said my friend , menacingly, before suddenl;y realising how that sounded; then he flusteredly explained that was on account of my food sensitivities, thus i might have to make do with a baked potato  minus trimmings , or just a soya milk latte,  as usual)

The soya milk Latte is actually a great way of packing a bit of actual nutrition into my non-lunch, non-tea, or non-dinner, and of making myself feel as if  i really am having a treat. So i was up for that.  I decided in advance to forgo the freaking baked potato.  Even with my increasing ataxia etc. , i am still totally capable of scrubbing up a potato and bunging it in the microwave, so I totally resent paying some chef to do that  for me.

The target venue was a somewhat  upmarket little restaurant that turned out to quite a bit  further from the carpark than i can safely manage, normally. But  I managed it, making judicious rests along the way, because I happened to feel pretty good that day, and   I didn't want to spoil it for everybody by forcing a change of venue.  And the place turned out to be really impressive, cosy old -worlde feel to it, good food  and good service. My latte only cost £2.60 - which is not  above standard  English prices. What's more, they turned out to have something other than baked potato I could have- their homemade tomato soup. Not much, i know, but it really was nice soup. and a very welcome change.

My son and his friend had a traditional English Tea for Two, with Proseco as an optional extra.  The food came in three tiers   (literally! on a 3-tier silver stand)  comprising sandwiches at the bottom, scones with butter, jam and cream on the middle tier (the best scones my son had ever tasted) and four mouthwatering little cakes at the top.  Thatlot  cost him  £26 i noticed (plus an extra £10 for Proseco) ; not the sort of money either of us would spend lightly, but given the quality, presentation and great service, not to mention nice venue,  I figured i was actually pretty good value

Son's Norweigian friend was suitably impressed, and thrilled with the whole experience ("I feel as if I'm in Legoland" she exulted, pointing at all the quaint buildings along the way). And even I felt I'd had a really nice day out :)

Oh yes, we did. We had to redo the whole thing and pay for it ourselves. Apparently it's impossible to successfully sue a contractor even if you have the paperwork to show all the things he fucked up.

Bought some lithium metal, in mineral oil, a little under an ounce, in little prills or chips, kinda small pelleted nuggets of Li metal, which is one of two perfect forms for my main uses for it in the world of chemistry. The other, as it happens, being the strips of Li foil to be yanked out, under mineral oil or under petrol that has been sparged with inert gas through a fishtank bubbler airstone thingy to prevent it oxidizing as rapidly as it can be pulled out. Its in the form of a thin tape-like foil, very thin and very rapidly reactive due to the large surface area.
