Your obsessions are fluorescent lights? :o How can you stand the light?
-
i'm allergic to fluorescent lights. i like them in theory and from far away. :P
-
They don't hurt my eyes. I don't have that sensory issue. I can't see the flickering in them like most of you can or hear the buzzing.

-
fluorescent lights make me anxious and ill. when i went to school i think the lights had a lot to do with my migraines.
-
walk into the light.
-
you walk into the light :P
-
Fluorescent light is especially bad in a room with blank, white walls, like waiting rooms and examining rooms in hospitals.
-
why do they do that?
-
It's a lot scarier that way.
-
hospitals should have calming lights, like candle light or whatnot, and they would have insence(sp???) burning and new age music...

You have no idea... I've never been able to leave my cinema. They closed it down as a commercial cinema twelve years ago and, apart from two or so years of commercial runs, we now only use it for special screenings and the film festival, once a year, but I'm completely obsessed about the place.

Yeah with a Fractal Program.

You should see how the fractal art prints with an inkjet onto silk. It's gorgeous. I've only done one large one and a few small tests, but I really think I could sell them if I chose the images carefully to appeal to an interior designer.
-
defo. you should do it.
and not just interior, clothes as well. i've always loved clothes design, if i knew how to make clothes i'd totally buy fractal fabrics.

Me? Yeah, but this particular theatre is a non-commercial one, these days. I'm working once a week or thereabouts, and nothing during the summers.
And customer service isn't on my list, either. I'm a projectionist and avoid the crowds at all cost.

Yes, it's the best job in the world. Too bad it doesn't pay.
-
well that sucks.
-
It's not about the money, though. It never was. When I started out in the business I would have been happy to work for free, that's how much fun it was.
-
i just think of things in terms of making a living. since i have no real means of making a living currently... it's kind of always in the back of my head.
-
Which is why I don't make most of my living from being a projectionist. When I'm not unemployed, I'm an information analyst. That pays well but there's not enough work... :(
-
that sucks.
-
It does. But cinemas are dying all over the world. You can download just about anything, screen it at home with a sound system that is both cheaper and better than the average multiplex box's out there. I'm one of the last of a dying breed. :P
-
well. i love a real movie theater, beats home stuff any day. it's just that other people tend to make it less fun. if i was a millionaire i'd build my own movie theater and live there.
-

You don't have to be a millionaire but you do have to know where to get the stuff you need. I have a fully functional cinema in my garage, with 12 seats and a 3-metre screen. I even have a separate projection booth. It's mostly recycled cinema technology from closed-down theatres, from the projector to the Dolby processor.
-
well i don't even have a garage so i would still need quite a lot of money. what about your neighbours?

Very cool. I built a LCD projector. Its in our bedroom. The screen isn't 3 meters, it's about two. No seats either, we just lay in bed to watch it.

I can't post a pic about my obession, for obvious reasons. I hope you people would have got that when I said obession, it was a joke, that is not all I think about nor do I get anxiety from not doing it. My grandmother mattered alot to me, and I got tears thinking about her death after I left, as I halted any show of that kind of emotion infront of her. When I was in front of her,t he tears came, but they went a way so fast it was not even funny.
-
Sorry to hear about your grandmother Flo.

More sorrys to come, my mom is at risk for a stroke herself, so I hope I really wish I had my degree already to help her.

If the bible was written by man, it was done with imagination, therefore imagination is God. Personally, I think that imagination is the most important aspect of being human. Everything that has been done in history, every advance we've made was the result of someone's imagination.
That's it. hehe It's just a stub.

Radios and fire

That is so fucking cool.

-
I'm into fire, but the radio is what caught my attention. I used to have an old Blaupunkt. I'm not sure what happened to it. I think it may be in my brothers barn. It was huge heavy beast with a remote power supply.
It had all the bands available to the public, but I never had a decent antenna tower. It was when the CB craze hit in the seventies, but as always, I went several steps farther than what others were doing.
-
The radio is from the lend lease program in WW2 It was supposed to go in a medium tank

Interesting!
An old co-hobbyist I knew collected enormous tubes also, but all of his stuff was from ships. His radar tubes were impressive - you would have loved them!
He had made a small power supply for an old ship based radar tube and kept it as a "nightlight" lamp. It let out yellowish light from the bottom and an eerie purple and ultraviolet glow from the top. It was the coolest lamp I ever saw. The, almost two feet tall, piece of glass made quite a statement, too. Even though it was non-functional as a radar tube, he estimated that the power level he was using, it should last for over one hundred years as a lamp.

Oh, yeah!
A lot of people think the movie is hokey or cheesy, but I love it. I think it is deeply textured, very detailed and, beyond doubt, a beautifully photographed work of art. Did I mention the costuming is spectacular? The English voices on the DVD suck, though. I watch it in the native language (with subtitles at first, but I know the story now).
-
I only saw it at a bar, and the sound was
off. It looked silly as hell, but yeah, the
imagery was breathtaking.

Just noticed this. Both. Didn't care for the former,
but I was pretty fanatical about SFB for a few years.
-
Did you ever play Blitzkrieg or SFB?
Just noticed this. Both. Didn't care for the former,
but I was pretty fanatical about SFB for a few years.
I played both and a few more I can't remember all through college. SFB was my favorite also tried teaching the kids but at the time they were too young may try again soon. It won't be the same as in college lots of beer and pot went with the game. I drove ninety miles to a hobby store that had SFB volume 3 when I was bored one summer and on workman's comp with a severe cut on my foot I could hardly walk but driving was fine. Everybody thought I was nuts :green:
-
Game went through a lot of incarnations.
Started out as a little pocket game.
I started with the designer's edition,
which had a quick sequence of expansions.
Then they started going with things you
could put in binders. I bought two separate
sets of rules for that (the last was called Captain's).
Kind of gave up around that point, as although
my wife enjoyed, I couldn't get her into a campaign.
My favorite race was the Hydrans. Yourself?
-
Age of Empires.
-
My wife hates all scifi I tried but to no avail. I like the Gorns and the Interstellar Concordium which was out right about when you stopped i think. Always liked plasma and PPD and favored groups of small ships
-
The ISC was around. I thought that they were
pretty underpowered. The drone users were
the scary ones - at least in fleet battles.
My wife loved the Klingons. But, she saw
their weakness, as soon as she had to
deal with more than a couple ships.

Not sure where to put this, but my "obsessive" bio-science reading produced this interesting tidbit ...
See-Through Frog Bred in Japan (http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/09/070928-frog-picture.html)
September 28, 2007—For high school students everywhere, this revealing amphibian may be a cut above regular frogs.
That's because the see-through frog does not require dissection to see its organs, blood vessels, and eggs.
Masayuki Sumida, a professor at the Institute for Amphibian Biology at Japan's Hiroshima University, bred the frog to be a humane learning tool.
"You can watch organs of the same frog over its entire life, as you don't have to dissect it," Sumida told the news agency Agence France-Presse. The scientist announced his research last week at an academic meeting.
Dissecting animals for science has sparked controversies worldwide, even prompting some companies to create computer simulations as cruelty-free alternatives.
Researchers bred the sheer creature—a type of Japanese brown frog—for two recessive genes that make it pale.
Though not yet patented, the frog is the first four-legged, see-through animal to be bred by scientists. Some fish species are also clear.
Only 1 in 16 frogs end up see-through, and Sumida's team has not yet figured out how to pass on the transparent trait to offspring.

Damn I have no camera. If only I had one for the stuff I got last week. Already gave my friend Matt the idea for me to hold a big bud up to my face as a weed moustache. We took some photos but they were playing with an outside light source (pretty trippy). Still need a good bud picture, but then again I don't want to get attention from cops or anything so having my face in the photo might be a bad idea.
-
A photograph of you holding something resembling dried out plant material does not constitute proof of your possession of an illicit or controlled substance, even if they were already stalking you. Post away happy, dude!

Who is the picture of? I am sorry that I don't get it.
Just a modeling pic of my most
recent obsession. :-\

Dammit, you Brits have no idea how good you have it. Check out my avatar to see the kinds of landscapes I've been exploring recently.
sadly, it's not like that everywhere - i live in an inner cityscape, which is nasty. one of the few reasons i can cope with the shithole i live in is that there's a huge park a couple of minutes walk away, and the real countryside is only a short drive/bus (although i try not to drive, obviously).
-
Well, at least you have places like that around. This state is supposed to be pretty, but I've never seen anywhere in the Rockies that looked as great as that.

I do know how good I have it. the conurbation in which I live is all contrasts - the valleys are packed with decaying former mill/industrial towns, the cities are as Lucifer says utter shitholes, and the fells and moors above are glorious. I live in a twat-infested, rundown craphole, but three or four miles away I can have the tops almost to myself.
-
He's very right. Within about ten or fifteen miles I could either be in glorious countryside and the lovely fells and forest that lie within or a smouldering, festering shithole. Fortunately I live in a very nice area. :)

Having lived in New York City and discovering Central Park, I can identify with that! 8)

Anyway, I cut down on my antidepressants and now I have an obsession again!
seconded.
i can't watch those yet. i'm not on antidepressants but feeling blah.
i want to enjoy them. :-\
-
Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis ARE my anti-depressants.
All hail Channel P2P :evillaugh:
-
when a show reaches God status in my head,
i get scared of watching it and direct my attention
to less good shows with less pressure to enjoy them
and then i have loads of the awesome shows to watch
when i find the courage and the
concentration

Hmm new season of Heroes coming up. Sylar is supposedly back lol.

Let's not forget the setting sun ...
Took it with my friends camera a while back. he is slow to offer pics.

It's like a group event, sunset on a beach on the Gulf side, everybody is there watching the sun go down. It is beautiful! 8)

There was a spot on local TV about a guy in Westport a couple years ago. I know of several others too.

i think she's hella pretty. the hair is awesome.
she has an interesting stare.
the hair is amazing.

She is pretty and the hair is awesome, but she is not at all my type of sexy.
However, she does have the cute little turned up nose that allows her to breath a bit easier while deep throating. That's gotta be good.
Feel better, now, Alien?
:D

A little. Actually, 'tis funny, because
there's been almost no lust, as far as
she's concerned. All the same....

love and lust are separate.

I can't say I would get obsessed over her, but she is attractive.
-
She is pretty. And she wears interesting clothes.
Thanks. Those are cosplay things from
the photographer she works with. He
specializes in stuff like that. She's into it
though, and makes her own stuff.
love and lust are separate.
Sure. I'm just not used to finding someone
pretty, and wanting them, but not really sexually.
Weird. I know it would change, if we were actually
together. Only one other woman made me feel that
way, and I didn't really want her, just admired.
-
i have a crush on half the cast of Heroes but only Mohinder is someone i lust after. who knows why.
-
I can't obsess over a lot of people.
Probably only one at a time. Which
sucks, given my desires. :-\
-
i like more than a hundred people at the same time.
i have a current crush on about two dozen.
then i have the top 5 who i like most of all currently.
then i have THE ONE. that's always Danny.
then i have the current THE ONE that always changes.

I'd make you forget them all. ;)

And to be super-anal-retentive: This picture is actually incorrect, in that the newborn neurons that supply the lower layers do not utilize the radial glial scaffolding to migrate but instead inherit the RG extension and translocate into the cortical plate. Also, the upper layer neurons do not arise directly from the RG's but from intermediate progenitors in the subventricular zone. They do, however, use the RG scaffolding to aid in their migration.
Awesomeness. :green: :green: :green:

Once upon a time, BMW was about driving and pedigree. Back before they catered to businessmen and douchebags who only bought them for the status.

Jack approves of Part's obsession.

Again agreeing with Jack.
Posting a link to old cold war watchtowers in the North of the Netherlands for Parts as a thank you.

The model on the right is my latest addition.

Have never seen a graphing calculator, only know how to make graphs in spreadsheet. It looks addictive.
-
It is. But I'm more into their symbolic equation solvers and vector analysis capabilities. And the programming.
-
^I would like one of those (I would also like to know how to use it). I just have a scientific calculator that I bought when I was in high school. I still have its instruction manual too.
-
You can get one for a reasonable price at eBay. The one on the right--the 50g--is the one to get these days. The middle one is basically a failed update of the one to the left, and the left one--the 48G--is rather old now. I bought mine in 1995, I think.
BTW, you are better off with a TI graphing calculator unless you like the RPN entry mode (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reverse_Polish_notation). HP calculators are known for their RPN implementations, which is great if you need to be able to perform exploratory calculation, but it does take some getting used to.
-
I have one of the 48Gs. Somewhere I have a graphing calculator I got when I was in college in 1989 but I don't remember what brand or model it is.

I toyed with my HP 50g all evening yesterday. It is sometimes very soothing to do exploratory calculus.

I found it :green: A Casio FX-7000G Though this is not the one I had back then as it was stolen I found this one about ten years ago in a box of stuff someone left out for trash pick up with a load of interesting things in it. I bought my original one from a friend new for $100 in 1989

Awesome. :plus:
Hold on to that one. It's the first widely available graphing calculator.

 They are scarce around here.
There was a nice one in the donation pile at goodwill one day while I was in there, older model than that though, needed some going over, but solid. Asked if they would price it for me, nope...had to be checked over first. Wanted it "as is". Nope.
Probably threw it in the dumpster along with the other vacuums, they don't want to "check over". :P

These are currently my favourite pair.

They're not very expensive and there are better headphones out there, but I love the mids when using this.

I want these.
They are noise-cancelling, which would come in handy when travelling. My current pair doesn't cancel out any noise and are pretty much useless on board a plane.
But I also want these.

By many considered the best cans ever made, the AKG K702.
