Title: I've signed up out of boredom; likely closing this account because of boredom 2
Post by: Slasher on September 23, 2010, 11:47:59 PM
Hi, just seeing what's the go with free speech forums. This one, apparently, comes recommended. I dislike a lot of modern societies structures - especially the monetary system, and old fashioned manufacturing which heavily polute and directly destroy our atmosphere, and climate. I don't like how people blindly follow, or put them self inside a concept and basically become a spokesperson for the ideas of such concepts; such as people with a "strong work ethic" who spout today what was implemented in the middle to late 18th century for the Orthodox church - ie. 'shame on you if 5 minutes goes toward something unproductive'. And this obviously means I don't have a lot of time for people who believe in young earth creationism, or arrogant people who believe their opinion is somehow better than yours (or mine). I'm an agnostic atheist, a chess enthusiast, an avid reader, occasional writer and once in a blue moon binge drinker. That is all.

I'm known for inviting over lame members. There was only one person who was actually cool. Ask Phlexor about it. He's the one whose said it. I recall a few others had said so too but I don't remember who those were.

"Oh, and I just bought a climate-friendly car so I'm right with you on this."

We use environmentally friendly horses and carriages.  Some of our carriages have been in the family for generations.  However, the horses have a habit of not lasting as long as the carriages.

And there is the pollution issue too, with the horses. We received some more complaints Your Highness. Ever since the street-sweepers are on strike, people do complain about everything.

Well, have organic farmers follow the horses.

Their all busy harvesting now, but they have sent their children to do this.

Now there is hoping no one will complain about little children with huge baskets filled with apples from the noble beasts.

I'd buy a hybrid because I'm too much of a miser to spend half my money on fuel. My mother has one and it lasts a good 2 weeks on a full tank.

Probably for the disreputable to lounge around and occasionally become animated without running the risk of being kicked out for having their feet on the upholstery or for swearing.

Enabling the spazzes, giving them a place where they can learn how to speak up for themselves and fight back. It's something best done by imposing as few restrictions as possible, by doing away with moderation and the enforced niceness evident elsewhere.

I think that if someone is nice to you here, it might actually be honest.

Rely on you? Mate I could and can. If it comes to a pie eating contest I think I would back you heavily. I don't think you would let me down.
Rely on you to be able to make a reasoned or rational call? Not so much.
Rely on you to take a mature, critical and non-sexist approach to the women here? Again not so much
But as to being able to spout moronic insensibilities? Well since Richard has left I think you fill the shoes admirably. Go Phlex. Post away.

Gird your loins and get into your profile.  The section on the left margin titles email and notification has the options that will relieve your boredom.  (Who would have thought Queen Victoria was giving computer advice?  The world will end in 2012.)

A textile thread is usually knotted at one or both ends when sewing.  A thread in forums while not a textile can ensnare the reader and figuratively keep him "in knots", unable to leave the thread because he is a captive.

It's like playing Monopoly and wanting to sit on 'Free Parking' the whole game. Every once in awhile you have to venture out to land on Piccadilly or Mayfair. Hell, if you buy one of them you might even get the chance to put hotels up and VOOOM! You are kicking arse then.

You can call yourself an 'InternationalGrandMaster' all you want, but to be one, you have to take that next step. Otherwise, GTFO and delete your account.

It's freedom of speech in the fact that you can say whatever you like, provided you can field the shit that may come your way. WP and other sites don't allow that to happen. So go ahead and say what you want anywhere on this forum, just don't expect everyone to be warm and fuzzy.

Freedom of speech allows restriction of freedom of speech. The concept alone is a paradox.

It isn't really a paradox, unless you're asserting that all "truth" is a paradox (but this is another argument). I think it's perfectly logical: Although you can't truly possess freedom that isn't to say that another situational concept cannot be applied to remove it.

The problem is due to everything isn't exactly black or white.

An example would be this: People censor one another all the time if they find their viewpoints unfavourable. The people censoring other's freedom of speech are also expressing freedom of speech, saying that they think those other people are wrong as justification for their censorship.

Two words that prove freedom of speech is bullshit, Political Correctness. Hell, there's one word that's even better and that is, Censorship.

You'll find that freedom of speech is an illusion once you start believing in a minority opinion that's considered taboo or undesirable.

These fuckers are only allowed to get away with their PC crap because the population gets sucked in by their rhetoric. Had we had enough balls to tell them to 'fuck off' back in the early days, we'd be far better off.

I should have the right to call someone a moronic fucking imbecile if I choose, as that moronic fucking imbecile should have the same right to have a go at me. Here we can do that, other places..... no.

The point is though, if there's EVER being a moment in your life where you really wanted to say something, but couldn't because you know it will fuck your life up (even if it's entirely truthful and honest), then that's already an example of how free speech doesn't truly exist. Yes, you can still choose to say it, but beware of the consequences though.

The reality is, anything you say ultimately cost something in both positive and negative ways, be money, reputation, integrity, honour, pride, respect, relationships, freedoms, security, etc.

Stupid more like :P It also depends on one's circumstances. Once you get to the point where you feel you have nothing left to lose, except perhaps your sanity, you will say anything to keep that sanity in place, regardless of the circumstances. That's not bravery, just survival and perhaps an inability to keep one's mouth shut.

Freedom of speech issues are mainly concerned with consequence. This site has a lot of good input from members, even though some of the posts sound contradictory but then that happens as you start making assertions so that some of the thoughts which are expressed need to be facilitated by excusing, through a sort of explaining, such as playing down to similes, or defining specific reasoning as an exception to the rule.

I find some of the I2 processes tedious, such as when I click next to find I'm in another forum, or when I've posted and another page loads. While there is a roughly equal amount of traffic here to other forums, I'm not sure what this one is concerned with, which in contrast to other forums, has an apparent lack of direction. I generally sign up to forums where there is a subject matter, or shared interest, experiences, etc. If I can't work out a purpose for this site, then how the hell am I meant to be motivated here!? If there were a thread stating a summary which makes sense, I would have a better idea before I post. And seeing how I can like a subject and dislike a forum based on the members, I'm finding it interesting that I've joined a forum which apparently has no subject, which is a highlight for me; yet find the members okay, which keeps me interested in hanging out for a while longer, if only because this is the first time the reverse has been true, that a topic has been disinteresting, while the members are.

The previous and next buttons are for topics, so I don't really like them either.

What I use most of the time is the "Show unread posts since last visit" button near the top of the page.  The new page loading after you make a post was frustrating for me as well, but it can be changed in your profile under "Look and Layout Preferences" where it says "Return to topics after posting by default."  I'll change that for you and if I misunderstood what you meant, it can easily be changed back again.

You seem like an interesting person to me, so you could jump right in and start another interesting topic or you could even post in someone else's.

Sorry, I've had some things going on and haven't had much time to think about it. Thanks for adjusting the settings for me, Callaway. I didn't mean interesting people being disinteresting at all. I meant that a topic is usually what interests me and the people less so. Whereas, I2 is proving that the opposite might be possible to achieve. Why is there no topic and yet I'm engaging in conversation? It could be that I've looked into my continued discussion and attributed more interest than I have, or that I'm not attributing enough to those topics that have been covered (albeit light heartedly). Maybe the most interesting thing here is that I don't know what the topic is and it's really my interest in discovering what it is that keeps me entertained. At any rate, I'm not sure what the range of discussions are here. I mean shouldn't any decent discussion have some focus? Where would the point be in merely sharing opinion without scrutiny of a logical nature? There must be a dividing line between opinion and fact (or what is considered fact) otherwise there is nothing but an impractical null argument (opinion based). When it comes to moving on, or becoming involved; it's important to me to establish where I'm going, or what I'm motivated toward, or what purpose, etc can be met, or achievement be obtained. I'm still lost as to that. But in a way that could make for progress in working with ambiguity. But judging by some responses I've received, I seem to have plenty of that going on. Or maybe that's the result of having a lack in handling ambiguity and being less able to define my position in concrete terms. I think the free expression of this site might be a nice break because social rules could probably do with more "breaking", and it seems that members here are able to express themselves more openly here than most places to the benefit of venting like anyone does and where having a generally limited capacity toward expression in this communities population would allow a greater amount of healthy venting which might otherwise be hampered by the inherent issues of communication and said social rules. But that mightn't necessitate the action being positive since having developed such a habit on I2 could lead to unfavorable situations where such behaviour isn't tollerated. Then again, having developed bad habits might deter those who wouldn't tollerate such from reprimanding an individual acculturated with I2, or in the case that reprimanding the individual concerned were to come about, that individual might harbour a generally more aggressive attitude to happily sustain that. But to what disagreement which would ensue? One of opinion, or something logical, based on fact and since when is a logical argument concerned with emotion? It wouldn't be in the spirit of arriving at the truth, if it were.

In my line of work (Union Electrician) we are free within reason to tell others to fuck off from time to time because we switch jobs frequently any way. Over a lot of years I have worked hard to get along better with others. When I began posting on the internet not quite 3 years ago a lot of that practiced discipline went out the window and that is why for the last 2 weeks or so I have tried to avoid more pissing contests.
While this site does have some fairly smart members I come here more for general chit chat than engaging in high school debate or scholarly pursuit. IMO this is a fun place for the most part, but not a place to form a worldview or get serious about anything, in my capacity as a Union member and NRA members council member I get enough serious shit to not want to bring that attitude here. Of course you are free to use this site differently than I do.
