Gird your loins and get into your profile.  The section on the left margin titles email and notification has the options that will relieve your boredom.  (Who would have thought Queen Victoria was giving computer advice?  The world will end in 2012.)

A textile thread is usually knotted at one or both ends when sewing.  A thread in forums while not a textile can ensnare the reader and figuratively keep him "in knots", unable to leave the thread because he is a captive.
