I live in the middle of nowhere, all that goes on outside is rioting sheep (they are a surprisingly unruly animal :D) and deer running through my veg patch, cute bastards.

'Neighbour' across the street, quite a skilled woodworker he is, is making an extra ja, extension to his house. He has done so previously but he just starts new wood projects all summer. Looks good.
I'm hearing woodworker's sounds since 10 this morning too.
I see things progress looking out of my bedroom window (or from the balcony) and I could make a picture of the creative 'buildings' he made but I should not invade his privacy, I feel. Wouldn't like it much the other way around either.

At the moment, all is quiet. About an hour ago, there were sounds of things falling. Pans or so, outside. Did go on for a while. It is 2 am now, where I live.

Neighbour cat guards my garden, while sitting on my garden table.

Neighbours have a lot of visitors who turn up for 5 minutes and then leave again. He also has 3 kids who very noisily ride on their trikes (if that is a word) past the front of our house for hours every day.
We get a lot of traffic go past, a lot of it does burnouts, dickheads they are. It is what we get for living 3 doors down from Centrelink.

run parallel to that road. There is a big factory on the other side of those tracks. My neighborhood is ... gritty. 8)

I would like to live closer to a train station. But living close to a bus stop is ok. Like Mia, we get hoons up and down here. Quite a lot. Instead of Tuckey Street, it should be Dickhead Street, given the amount of them around here.
A few nights ago someone was screaming at someone else that they were going to cut their head off. Pleasant.

It was after the Christmas Pageant that fireworks were set off, done by professional people on the foreshore.
Yes, New Zealand would be nice about now. But no money. Couldn't even afford to go and visit Ceilidh's family in Toowoomba, Queensland this year. Prefer their summer as it rains a fair bit and is cooler.

We have what I call "junk out the front" and I think next door have overdone it, putting clothes and cardboard boxes out there. We are the front unit so it looks like it is all ours. Every now and then a car will stop and people will get out and have a look.

I live in interesting times. From the Times-Picayune today.
New Orleans paramedics responded late Tuesday night to one of the city's oddest emergency calls in some time, when they were dispatched to an undisclosed French Quarter location by reports of a "man on fire."
Well, part of him, anyway.
The responding crew had to treat and transport a man who had sustained severe burns that were limited to both buttocks and one upper rear thigh. The man was given pain medication after what, apparently, was an asinine stunt. Medics said he was transported to the Interim LSU Hospital trauma center in stable condition.
New Orleans EMS spokeswoman Liz Belcher confirmed what details she could on Wednesday, but noted that the EMS crew handling the call was unable to obtain the patient's age, nor learn how his buns had gotten so sticky. The man was described as "uncooperative."
Imagine that.
"After reading the report and speaking with the responding crew, it seems they got a call for a man on fire," Belcher said. "They showed up, and bystanders had extinguished the gentleman. We are not quite sure how he became the victim of a fire. He was not clear on that."
There was no indication that the man was a plumber, nor whether crack played a role in his mishap.
Bottom line, this had to hurt. And here it's not even a full moon this week.

The National Pike Days Festival is celebrated in May which celebrates the history of what is now Route 40 through Somerset, Fayette and Washington counties. Route 40 is the National Road that stretches from New Jersey to California. It commemorate the travels of the pioneers and travelers across the Alleghenies. . The festival is celebrate all along Route 40

Ireland is an island to the west of Britain, but Northern Ireland is just off the mainland – not the Irish mainland, the British mainland.
The capital of Ireland is Dublin. It has a population of a million people, all of whom will be shopping in Norn Iron this afternoon. They travel to Norn Iron because it is in the North, which is not part of Ireland and as such is cheaper.
Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland. It has a population of half a million, half of whom have houses in Donegal. Donegal is in the north but not in the North. It is in the bit of the south that is further North than the North.
There are two parliaments in Ireland. The Dublin parliament is called the Dáil, an Irish word meaning the place banks go to steal taxpayers’ money. The one in Belfast is called Stormont, an Anglo-Saxon word meaning “place of grey men who fart through their mouths”. Their respective jurisdictions are defined by the border, an imaginary line on the map to show fuel launderers where to dump chemical waste.
Travel can be confusing because Ireland (north and south) is the only country in the world with two M1 motorways. The one in the North goes west to avoid the south and the one in the South goes north to avoid the price of drink.
We have two types of democracy in Ireland. Dublin democracy works by holding a referendum and then allowing the government to judge the result. If the government thinks the result is wrong, the referendum is held again. Twice in recent years the government decided the people’s choice was wrong and ordered a new referendum. Belfast democracy works differently. It has a parliament with no opposition, so the government is always right. This system generates envy in many world capitals, especially Dublin.
Ireland has three economies – northern, southern and black. Only the black economy is in the black. The north is red,white and blue simultaneously and the south is just red very very very red.
The peace process was introduced 10 years ago because republicans complained that “Provisional” and “Continuity” IRAs meant there were big words, hard to spell and the walls in Belfast and Derry were too small to fit all those letters in. Since,we the taxpayers were against the idea of building lots of wider low rent housing to accomodate the slogans we decided to have a “peace process” a by product of which was the introduction of the “Real” IRA which was easier to spell and left more room for pictures.
“Flegs” is the local patois for Flags. A lot of people not from Norn Iron think that we think that Flegs are really important. This is not in fact the case. Flegs are not the important thing at all,at all,at all.. it is the Fleg Poles that are important.
Fleg Poles are an ancient fertility symbol, a Lingam, a symbol of the eternal procreative germ part of the indivisible two-in-oneness of male and female, the passive space and active time from which all life originates. The Orange Order is a secret sect of Fleg Pole worshippers. They revere the Fleg Pole and try at all times to be penis-like in it’s honour. They regard it as a scared right and duty rooted (if you pardon the unintentional pun) in the traditions of generation after generation of fundamental cockishness. Part of this reverence is the flying of Flegs on the Fleg Pole,for without the , the fleg pole is sterile and stands ineffectually firing blanks into the blue skies of Ulster.
This is why Flegs on Fleg Poles are so important and worth all the fuss, to do otherise would meana quick slip into a state of symbolic castrastion.

Today, as it was about a year ago (I rescued a naked child from oncoming traffic right outside my garage in February, covered her with a towel and called the police - for the second time on this one child- and watched as the father was carted away and the child went into "the system."), but this time, a different child of another child, too young to understand how to maintain control of a baby.
This latest child was NOT my rescue, but someone else saw her first. Same kind of story.
I mean WTF is it with these young "kids with kids" who can not keep their babies from leaving the house and roaming around in traffic.
This time it was a mom who was carted off to jail as her baby was taken from her for safe keeping.

Here they move over our house for a couple of weeks already. They are a bit early, but when the weather gets cooler, we see them a lot. I heard once that they are very picky when it comes to temperature. So they are willing to fly quite some distances to sleep at a temperature they like, and fly back in the morning, to get their preferred grazing temperatures. Here they fly south in the evening, in the morning they fly north. Would not surprise me if you saw a flock heading north, tomorrow morning.

I actually have had a 'possum living in my garage, I have tried to sit and wait it out, but it has more waiting skills than I.
I am looking at setting up a baited trap (free to borrow from the Humane Society for a week), rather than my first instinct of just shooting it. For that to work, one has to first have a clean shot. It is too fast and I am impatient.
(Also, I do not want to shoot up all the cool shit I have in my garage just trying to get rid of a tobacco eating 'possum. Did I mention it ate half of my really fancy, expensive, pipe tobacco?)

Neighbour bitching about life to her partner or daughter. She seems to get more cranky and loud every day. Something is not well.

Took two of the pesky raccoons down which had decided that our roof was the place to set up housekeeping for the winter.
Hated to just shoot them, but firecrackers and bottle rockets did not work. Set up powerful speakers with hi frequency noise playing on our roof (heard this was the ultimate Green way to discourage pest animals) only lasted two days and they were back despite the noise. Went up there on our roof, poured a bottle of pee and tore down their nesting accoutrements. Still they wanted to live on our roof.
I had called pest control and had a trap brought by, but it was always tripped and the bait was gone, no damn raccoon inside for two weeks.
Finally, I shot them both.
I would have preferred to have the traps work, so I could have taken them to a wilderness area and let them go.
I feel that there will come a day when we are almost out of raccoons and I will remember this time with a heavy heart.

I doubt it. Raccoons are one of the animals that's thriving in human civilization. We couldn't wipe them out if we tried.

Next door's four kids are being very noisy, playing outside. Ceilidh made the mistake of inviting them all in yesterday and the day before while I was not at home. Today they bashed loudly on our windows and door and Ceilidh told me to ignore it. I told her it is her fault. They left after a long while but I can still hear them playing.

In a way past life I made photographic sets that were transferable from one place to another. I made it so that my job was kept for many years. Having something so incredibly forcible would have been a statement to make, seasonally.
Just never thought (at the time, mind you) how cool it would be to use a tortured human as a backdrop.
When I was creating my own backdrops, this whole Zombie, dead/alive still/vampiry thing was not yet going on. Fucking too bad for me.

If any of that shit is true, this place has just became fucking dangerous for any night time roust abouts. Trust me, there are plenty of night owl, neighborhood watchers, up most of the night.
NOW, with an added danger of most of us expecting some gang of assholes to go around setting fires ... ... just think for a moment. I only know of one household in my entire neighborhood who would probably just sit by and be passive while something like this went on.
Almost every homeowner would take drastic action to stop or catch these assholes. Sounds like a lot of ways that good people could make terrible mistakes in good intention and have the most horrible outcome.

I suppose I should take solace in the fact that they have about fifteen fairly cool antique engines and one never knows what is coming down the track until they blast the horn. I know all the horns by heart and each one's tone is different.

I could hear the distinctive horn sounds from my hotel in Bethesda in August. They were the exact sounds I'd learned to recognise from countless American TV shows and films. Quite cool, actually, a bit like being transported into those shows and films.
Ours don't sound like that and the locomotives here seldom have diesel engines.

What was there before? At the end of my street is Silver Sands State Park (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver_Sands_State_Park) which was a garbage dump and beach houses at one time and watching the transformation over the years has been very interesting

I think I was just an unsightly fenced off limbo between the road and the river (where people decades ago may have tried to live, but it kept flooding so no one was allowed to build there)...now they have this really cool long river walk park with lots of greenspace, and awesome new playgrounds and swing-benches for kids and adults. :)
They are also adding a boat dock to it.

I live one block away from a street with a train track running down the middle of the street. The tracks were there when the street was only a wagon trail.
The entire thing is a part of a transportation museum and the trains are just there to show off, but this time of year (fair season) the trains run several times per day. They have about twenty engines from the thirties, forties, and fifties that pull usually about twelve or so diner cars or passenger cars downtown to the fairgrounds.
So every day we get to see five or six classic old trains pulling passenger cars one block away.
They also have a HUGE steam engine from the eighteen nineties, but it only is run about three times per year.

I live very close to one of the stations on the Cogwheel Railway. It goes way up the steep hills, and the hills are so steep that the railway lines have a cogwheel to stop the trains sliding down. The views are awesome from it, you can see most of the city. Anytime I want to get down into the city, I use it.
I'm not sure if it's really a train, or a tram. It has the status of a tram line, but it feels like a train.

Music turned down at a really low level, and they only use the "trilplaat" at the end of their day, for half an hour or so. (And before easily overstimulated kid comes home)
No idea what the English word for "trilplaat" is. It's a heavy trembling devise to make the underground under pavings and brick streets more dense. Makes quite some noise, and has big vibrations.

Monday morning I was woken up at 7am on the dot by construction workers across the street using a similar device to break apart the concrete sidewalk. It was madness inducing.

In my street they use a lightweight, and they do not use it in abundance. So they are done within half an hour, and I barely feel the tremble in my house.
Usually, when someone is doing his garden pavement, they come with more heavy stuff, and they use it longer for smaller pieces. Then I would feel the tremble and hear the sound also if it was a street away from me.
The pavement is not really flat I noticed. :laugh:

Found out my neighbors son who was around 27 died. I think he overdosed but not sure he had been struggling with it since he was a teen and the last few years seemed to be doing better. At one point he came over and said he was sorry about being such a pain in the ass when he was younger, I told him kids do stupid things and not to worry about it. :-[

My pothead downstairs neighbor is moving out. I found this out when I returned home
one night last week to find a big truck parked on the front lawn and the front door off its

My street is very busy during the day because it's one of the ways to get to the north side of town and the shopping centre just down the road. There's a mini industrial area of sorts in the adjacent street with the town's bus depot (school buses coming in and out every morning and afternoon), as well as a popular mechanic across the road. There's usually cars parked on either side of my driveway every morning. There's also a pub over my back fence, and sometimes on the weekends there's loud people leaving the establishment and walking past the fence, about 5m from my kitchen window. We get hoons up and down here sometimes.
Hoons, I had to look that one up :plus: for expanding my vocabulary :) One of my son's good friend has hoon as his nickname I will have to tell him not to use it if he ever goes to Australia. I have some hoon types that live at the end of my street though not old enough to drive yet
Someone down the street is having work done on their house I can hear the saws
There is a sign on the main road near here that reads "Police Targeting..." and underneath is an interchangeable piece of sign that reads "Drunk Drivers" or "Seatbelts", etc. Right now, they have "Hoon Driving" up there.

Fireworks like that are just a good reason to make good quality fuse, and teach them about the virtues of exploding bridge-wire and slapper detonators, no flammables needed, just some thin wire or metal foil and a suitable capacitor bank, with a brief, high-energy electrical disharge with a very rapid rise time can cause the metal to explode with sufficient force to set off even pretty insensitive plastic explosives.

It's made a mess of the parking lot because most units have parking spots in front of the unit. They can't use those spots while the roofing and painting are going on so all available guest parking is being used up by tenants. If it wasn't for the fact that 1/3 of my complex is Chinese flight students who don't have cars, the problem would be worse.

I can't stand 'normal' opera. Ugh, goes straight through me. But I love doom metal opera, especially the sort with violins, but heavy, with a female lead vocalist in operatic style. I have to wonder what the neighbors think, when I've brought the computer or a CD player outside into the garden so I can listen to music while I'm doing some sort of chemical experimentation that needs to be done outdoors, blasting it out on the stereo while wearing gas mask, face visor, drop down blast-shield and elbow-length rubber gloves with a heavy fabric pair of gardening gloves over the top :heisenberg:

Lestat, I actually really like the doom opera that you've posted here. I expected to hate it and only listened out of curiosity.
I used to dislike opera but it's grown on me - maybe from watching opera singers make an impact on some of the TV reality/talent shows. I've become a big fan of Pavarotti over the past few years as well.

BIL was out on the deck facing the hill yesterday...unknown to him...under the 5-maybe 6" space of the deck is the lair of "Chubbs" (goundhog)...he's a good 20 lbs if not more and I'm not sure how he hasn't gotten lodged trying to wiggle under there yet.
Chubbs is on the hill eating my hosta's when my BIL startled him...so the 20 lb missile comes hurtling full tilt down the hill headed directly for his hole which happens to be directly under where my BIL is standing.
Not sure who can run faster now. :laugh:

My FIL had a .22 rifle as an answer to woodchucks eating his plants. The number killed and stuffed down their holes would depopulate a small country. He was trying to feed a family of 7 on his salary. Can't say as I blame him!

I had a very small Siamese cat named Bonsai. She had kittens and my mother thought it would be fun to see how our other cat would react to Bonsai's kitten. Bad decision. Bonsai hissed and arched up. We closed the door on the downstairs bathroom and let her calm down overnight. Well, my 6 foot father went into the bathroom the next morning. Bonsai charged him. Dad didn't stop running until he was at the top of the stairs. Bonsai was never more than 5 lbs, dad was over 200.

Until I hit maybe half a century in age I felt the same about opera.
It is something that has grown on me. Not sure if it is age or just that I've had time to listen to more of it.
I used to think that most people who claimed to like opera were only pretending so that they could appear cultured. Actually that's probably still the case.
I'm not beyond hope though. I'm not listening to opera CDs in my car (my kids would kill me). Just the occasional dose is enough.
I do really like that doom opera though.
One type of music that drives me mad is Balinese music. It's okay in very small doses, but if you stay on a Balinese resort they've got it going the whole bloody time. Not that I can afford to stay in a Balinese resort any more, but going back about a dozen years it was possible to stay in a big villa in a very swish resort for about $50 a night and still just about have the resort to yourself (terrorism dampened the enthusiasm for Balinese holidays for a while there).

I love watching them. I used to rent a cottage every summer with the kids for a week and sometimes you would see dragonflies going after the bugs and then out of the blue the bats would show up to eat the dragonflies. I never got tired of it.

Never get tired of nature. I love seeing the dragonfly vortexes with them just flying like a tornado. I love seeing bats flying outside.

I saw a swallowtail butterfly while enjoying my coffee in my back yard this morning.
I used to see many more of them. Now it seems I rarely see one in town, only the "kept meadows" near the parks and woods.
It has been at least a couple of years since my gardening efforts have attracted one.
I should look into that more.

we had fireworks displays here in the UK four days ago, for Midsummer. I guess that in the US, some folk might think " We might as well roll it in with July 5th and keep the cebrations going" Kinda like that protracted Christmas/New Year festival.
In any case, I swear we only had fireworks once per year (on Guy Fawkes night) when I was a kid. Then New years Eve fireworks started up, then Diwali fireworks, then Ramadan fireworks ..oh! and Chinese New Year ofc, every other asshole's birthday , I've given up trying to keep track . Fireworks are ever-less exciting and ever-more annoying. Or is it just that i'm getting old? Anyway, it's now long past the point where there's just no guessing when you 're gonna need to keep your cats, dogs and granny safely shut indoors for the night. :rollingpin:

We have loud fireworks here at all times of the year, as we have a large Pakistani community, some of whom - for reasons unknown - feel the need to include earth shaking fireworks and idiots hiring high powered sports cars to bomb around the streets in for pretty much any event (weddings, religious holidays, birthdays, etc etc). Unfortunately the lodge at the top of the road was sold a couple of years ago and now appears to be used as a functions venue by the Pakistanis. Happy happy joy ::)

Said moron wrote the fucker off driving like a cunt in Bradford city centre... Apparently the dodgy insurance arrangement used by the shady hire company involved a *very* large excess. They turned up on his doorstep with the boys demanding £40k towards the wreckage. He had to sell his mother's jewellery. True story. :lol1:

That must have been a life changing experience for the poor guy. He shouldn't have driven like a cunt in first place but I guess he saw it coming. Thankfully his mother's jewellery covered that but still, that's a huge loss right there.

It's not a rare occurence here sadly. At least he lived to learn from the experience, a number of young lads die every year in the city racing or otherwise showing off in cars they don't have the skill/experience/temperament to handle safely, or their passengers, or people who get in their way. Neighbours are doing a lot of drilling/sawing etc. outside for months now. They're supposed to be removing the extension they've left rotting since they don't have planning permission, but nothing seems to be done about it... which makes me wonder on what they're actually doing.

On Saturday it was a cop blocking our driveway and a dead deer ON our driveway at 7am. A kid hit it on his way to work around 6:30am. We called a friend to take it instead of animal control and although it was a young one (born this year for sure), they got 25 lbs of ground of it and I'm glad it didn't go to waste.

Yesterday was 19*C which is bizarre for November because usually we have snow by now. Today it's 3*C but my body is not liking the sudden drop. All of the critters that gather for the winter have been having a field day with the warmer weather.

The business next door has a security light that's activated whenever a car goes past. It lights up our backyard and shines through my bedroom window (which has crappy vertical blinds) and sometimes keeps me awake. I'd like the light to be made less sensitive or moved so that it's not pointed at the road.

There's been occasional activity to measure the damage - basically, part of the supporting structure of that road collapsed into the river next to it - but no real action. They blame the unique wildlife, the seasons, anything, while walkers and cyclists continue to use the stretch.
Thinking I have mentioned this before, but FFS, the Empire State Building was erected in just over a year. This is not difficult. It's not rocket science.

But, NH is well known for this, minimal funding for education and social needs, but, they will spend millions for highways to get more tourists in. And to top it off, next to every highway entrance and exit they will build a huge liquor store/rest stop! While removing every rest stop in between, you gotta pee or stretch your legs, tough shit! >:(

And that is the truth. One stretch of road that we traveled on long ago was 151 miles of straight highway without a single rest stop available. Just parking areas near woods that we had to pray there was not a lot of people there or even better NOBODY there. People were using the woods adjacent for their "business". And some of the stuff I saw in those wooded areas implied that there was a lot of "other" business going on. :hide: And the towns near the highway, didn't have many services for travelers. :GA:

I did that, too. The grass did not need mowing, but the leaves were pretty much covering everything.
I took out my mulching mower and now all the leaves are tiny pieces below the blades of the grass.

Funny thing is the thing that inspired me to mow yesterday was hearing, watching a little of the struggle and feeling sorry for another neighbor two doors down, across the street.
His work paid off! His yard looked great last night about sundown after his five or six hour ordeal.
I had early stuff to do, but when I came home at around 10AM, his yard was covered in leaves again.
I kind of feel sorry for him.
This old guy desperately needs a modern mulching mower!
I still do not even own a leaf rake. I won't need one.

The people across the road have two trees on their front verge and I think they (the trees) are the council's responsibility. They aren't in good shape and I think that's why a truck stops there twice a week at 7:30am to water/fertilise them. The trees don't look any better for it which is sad.
