Yes, you have to pay the tax when it is due or else you have to pay interest and penalties on the tax you owe, if you pay it when you file the return after April 15.

If you don't owe the government any money, then you can file for an extension with no penalty of any type.  They are happy to wait to give you your refund.

ouch.

i am terrified to do my taxes this year.
i only paid about $700 to the federal government last year.

i fileed exempt for most of the year.

on the brightside Boston was born in 2006.  and i paid 15,000 in interest on my home.
if i were to guess, i bet i have to cut them a check for about five grand.


though, as a volunteer soccer coach, i get to write off all my expendiatures that i incurred while coaching.

also, i bought an energy efficient heater and siding.  which i think is rebateable through taxes.

i will let you know.

Sounds like you need to re-adjust your deductions, somehow. I always feel like I've gotten it just right if I have to send the IRS about a hundred dollars. Some people like big refunds, but to me, that just means you gave your government an interest free loan over the year. They won't return the favor.

last year, early, we needed money for some reason.  so i changed my status to exempt...and was too lazy to fix it later in the year.

i may be alright, i am just too afraid to do my taxes right now.  i am only screwed if i owe over 10k.
