You are forgetting his production efforts.

How can I forget what I know nothing about?  ???

As far as I'm concerned, Genesis turned
to shit, once he took over. I don't care
WHAT he did while he wasn't fronting them.
Most of his own stuff is at least as bad.

Why? Does the truth hurt?

Wait a minute. Aren't the Smiths one of those tiny up-stream paddling groups who went in another direction before the emo thing actually made fruit?

Please, explain why you were listening to him, then.

Don't worry, I won't continue to try explaining why I grew to like him enough to defend his musical efforts.

I think they split up before the emos came along.

Yeah, what I meant is that they were paddling in another direction from the ones who floated downstream and went over Emo Falls. :D

The split was very big news and I've looked around the mags for an update. It seems that this blogger guy puts it better than the average sensationalists, who are mostly overpaid underachievers, anyway.

Morrissey Says "No" Again to Smiths Reunion

Oh, Mozzer...
In more Morrissey-related news, sit down. Think of the person you hate most in the world, and then think how much money it would take for you to hang around with him or her for, I dunno, a few weeks. What do you say, 50 grand? A million? Howabout $75 million? Well, Morrissey is made out of stronger stuff than you and I, as Billboard is reporting the Mozzer has turned down £40 million to tour as The Smiths, the only requirement being the inclusion of guitarist Johnny Marr. That's right, drummer Mike Joyce, who was awarded £1 million in a 1998 lawsuit against Marr and Morrissey for unfair distribution of royalties, doesn't even have to be included, and Morrissey still said no. What's the deal?

Well, maybe he's holding out for more cash. With bands from The Police to The Pixies reaping huge profits from reunion tours, The Smiths are one of the only major bands of the last 30 years (whose members are all still alive) who refuse to put their differences aside. The price can only go up, really. Hold out for $200 mil, Moz!

Please, explain why you were listening to him, then.

Don't worry, I won't continue to try explaining why I grew to like him enough to defend his musical efforts.

Recently? Like I said, there are a couple of songs that he
did that I like a lot. There's also a lot of very poppy stuff.
Hell, I'm unimpressed with Gabriel, after the mid-80's. Though,
he too managed some pretty good stuff, here and there.

Hell, I've heard that the roots of emo were
in The Who. But, most of that was angry, not
whiny.

I disagree with this position. (You are not the first to make this parallel) I think that the roots of emo lead us directly to Robert Plant and Ray Charles, before him. Jerry Lee Lewis, across the genres and Hank Williams on another island at the same time as the other two.

It doesn't really matter, because all those guys had music that gave an impetus to their generations, aside from cutting, crying, giving up, etc.

I would like to know when Giving Up/conceding to defeat became the norm?

These things go in cycles.

Really?
I thought it was a modern day expression of the comfort with which we live our unchallenged lives. I think that if we had conserved some of the danger of living a bit more, we would have people still trying their best, instead of giving up at the first bump they encounter in their lives.
