Happy xmas all.

Anyone get anything good?

Got a much needed new battery for my e-cig, couple of pairs of warm winter trousers, and best bit, a new lab balance, sensitive down to 1mg, and that is precisely what I needed, after the last one died screaming and ended up as a blob of melted plastic and rust. Whilst it served well enough for weighing out reagents, this is tenfold more sensitive and with many times lesser of a drift, plus cover to protect against air currents, calibration weights etc.

Now I can finally get cracking on a certain project I've had in mind for a while, as soon as I have some alcohol available (other than, that is, the beer I've been filling myself with this xmas)

Don't know if its going to prove active in vivo, but since its got both an entirely new heteroatom in a new place, plus a modification known to decrease quantities requisite for full in-vivo activity in humans in a more well known compound, there was no damned way I'm taking chances.

And that was with the phenethylamine original, not the corresponding amphetamine, which usually, in active compounds are active at 0.5-5mg (the latter is the least potent, more or less, bar a couple of them) so another three to four-fold improvement on that.

And for something thats never, that I've been able to root out, gone into a human being, or even been synthesized that I am privy to, buggered if I'm taking chances.

^Cool presents, Lestat.

I got money with which my mum specified that I spend it on getting my hair done (I told her last time I saw her that that was what I wanted) and more money with which I want to buy a portable vacuum cleaner. I've yet to go shopping for that.

Cashews from The PR
Title: Re: The Stupid Christmas Thread
Post by: Lestat on December 26, 2016, 12:36:03 PM
I was somewhat surprised actually. Since I need to replace my hotplate (well one of the three, is under repair, and quite honestly thats the only reason I haven't stripped the sack of shite being comandeered at the moment (it worked for boiling water to strip welding flux off stuff being made, and it could, arguably, be used for cooking. But its fucking schizophrenic and likes to trip the circuit breakers multiple times, needing turning off, breakers resetting, fuses replacing, and the nanosecond that it is not the only option, its getting gutted for the nichrome wire and going in the trash. But rather pleased with the scale especially.

Mmmmm cashews....I'm not sure whether it would be quicker for her to get to my heart through my stomach, or vice versa. But damn well that would do the trick. Was munching some last night with the xmas beer. Good ale and salted cashew nuts...mmm...definitely one of my favourite xmas snacks. Do wish her a happy xmas from me, and that she has my warm regards for the coming year. As, of course, QV, do you.

Gods fucking damn though I have such a sodding hangover now. And I shouldn't. Forgot about having to temporarily rely on a half dose of my usual antiseizure med for the previous and that day, and not being able to make some more as one of the reagents I'd have needed to make the same stuff in an emergency the pigs impounded. May they choke on it.  If they opened the bottle...santa just brought me an unintended xmas gift as blowback of someone ELSE being on the naughty list. Or the s/hit list. That would, I believe, have prevented the interaction with metronidazole, an antibiotic that reacts most unpleasantly with alcohol. Thats the only culprit I can assume, since I didn't even have one crate of lager, It was shared between three people.

And bugger if I didn't have to wait longer than needs be for those antiseizure meds amongst others.

Needed a new eye patch too, ended up having to buy a sleep mask with built-in earplugs instead. But what happened? exactly what my cynicism said would happen. Moment I walked back in from the place, to home, what did I find? aside from the leftover reindeer curry that is. (jk, its beef. Funny damn cow though, flying like that, and must have been from some altitude to have its fore-end heated to such a glow by reentry into the atmosphere.)

Traditional xmas grub, it was not. But bugger all the turkey and shite, neither me or the old man are particularly fond of it, my uncle would eat the plate if given a chance and chase it down with the cutlery (I jest, sort of, but he, whilst not at all fat, he does ENJOY his grub. Made him what he'd be doubtless horrified not to get, always make him some flapjacks, this year, gave them extra kick using fresh grated ginger root, scraped to a pulp and extracted into the heated liquid sugar/syrup/butter fraction, as well as dried powdered stuff.

But we three got on quite well enough with two cans of pringles, a crate of lager, some ale, and a DIY curry. I left out the fly agaric this time, mainly because of my uncle's health, and not being able to predict interactions with immune regulatory agents, given his condition, whilst the mushroom has been in use from time immemorial, the condition, has not. And the twain must meet rarely if ever. That and I wasn't even hungry myself really, content to snack on cashews and fill up on lager.

The scale is the one I am most pleased with though. I have resolved not to use it for weighing any liquid reagents, and to buy myself a cheap shit 10mg resolution one, which is fine for syntheses, but something the likes as is available from average head shops for dealers and such to weigh their herb and other shit on, that will do just fine, resolution range wise, for synthetic processes, just not for the research using the results of said processes, or sensitive assays in vitro in cases where I demand nothing short of absolute precision.

Even didn't get a fuss made by my docs when I asked for some additional oxy, again, considering my eye is still somewhat sore. Its not too bad now actually, when kept behind the eyepatch, but when I couldn't find it today, going out to pick those meds up, I shrivelled from the sun like a vampire being force-fed a holy water beer-bong. Up both ways at once.

Still, the extra oxy is working wonders as a hangover cure. For a hangover I shouldn't even HAVE. My usual limit is about a liter of vodka before I'd feel like throwing up, down in three shots for a 70cl or four for a 1l bottle of spirit. Although I did once make the mistake, doing something like that with absinthe, and ever since that day, I've drunk alcohol perhaps 3-4 times at most. Such was the sheer virulence of the hangover to follow the day after. If someone had offered me the choice between a hospital's annual supply of morphine, and a double barreled shotgun, the day after from that one I'd have chosen both. Whilst falling from a plane, sans parachute, just to make damn well sure. I'm not much of a drinker anyway though by preference. CAN hold it, just don't wish to. And with beer, even on a med that sensitizes people extremely (the antiseizure stuff, chlormethiazole) to alcohol I can BARELY manage to get to a stage where I feel a light warm buzz, which is what I aim for at most usually if indulging for any other reason than to slake thirst. But of course, when theres a big bowl of dee-lish salted roasted cashews beside me, then the beer must flow :)

I do hope neither you nor the PR have any nasty hangovers my dears, (same goes for the rest of you, MLAnus aside. Although technically speaking, in order of precedence, a hangover would have a MLArsewipe rather than the other way around, and beer bottles would vomit that cunt backwards out of the sewers)

The PR is strictly a tee totaler.  I haven't had a drink in ever so long, but that's not a permanent condition.

I don't drink either as I am unsure as to how it will interact with my meds. Plus my dad is an alcoholic and I don't want to end up like that.

Just about to finish off the bottle of ale I opened last night but only had a few mouthfuls of, and thence a rollup, whilst I wait for my morning meds to kick in.

For some reason, I always really, really want a smoke when my morphine kicks in. Oxy doesn't share that same trait much.

*many hours later, after waking up from a nap sitting slumped in the computer chair*

Still didn't quite finish that bottle of ale. A swallow left for rinsing my mouth out after finishing my relit smoke. That presumably was the alcohol, albeit less than a bottle of 5% EtOH w/v ale interacting with the mixture of chlormethiazole, oxy, morphine and nitrazepam. MMm...feel much better for having a good sleep, and waking up to marilyn manson blasting from the youtube clip from the headphones round my neck :)

My daughter did that the day after Thanksgiving. She also pulled out my wife's collection of nutcrackers. Unfortunately, with a touch of OCD, she has re-arranged the tree and the display of nutcrackers several times per day since.
 :GA:

Of course all that Christmas shit is poised in FRONT of my speaker systems. Everything sounds muffled, like there is a pillow over every speaker. The speakers are very powerful and I can still discern everything but nuances, but I always have a month of crap sound while all this seasonal crap unfolds.

I have collected about three hundred CDS recently and my concern is that I had them stacked atop one of my subwoofers (this is actually a negative sub, used out of phase from the rest to ameliorate or lessen a few room dynamic nodes) and now I have no idea where to find my latest acquisitions.
They have been moved or removed.
Either way this happenstance suxxors.

I should put up the tree, but I've been stalling.
Tree tends to go up last minute here, and down again quickly after. Prefer to maintain normalcy inside the house as much as possible. The outdoor lights go up early, but not doing them this year. They're getting old and don't feel like spending the money to replace them. Plus Jack is getting old and it's a lot of work. Like to have all the shopping and wrapping done by first week of December so to avoid stress and only have to be concerned about the event.

Our neighbourhood is big on the light displays. We just strung up lights along the front of the house and around one tree, looks good without being OTT.

Early Xmas present for the whole family was our expensive new puppy. So no need for present shopping.

My son is 14. He didn't start developing doubts about Santa Claus until he was 12. I always told my kids I don't believe in Santa. My daughter stopped believing when she was 10.

Did some decorating.

Snowman and fresh pine arranged in the planters on the front porch, wreath on the door. Stopped at the tree...hung white lights on my 4 ft "money tree" and the 3 meyer lemon trees crowding the window space near my sliding door.

It looks cozy, might skip the tree totally or do the last minute thing like Jack.  ;) Thanks.

My wife's birthday is this week end.

She LOVES Christmas shit for her birthday, but I get something related to Christmas for her every year. I also try to find something that means something to her every year.

This year I "wood burned" an tiny angel with a graduation cap, representing her daughter's graduation and reminding her that all her babies are all grown up.

Best I could come up with to represent this year's massive timescape.

While shopping with my daughter, yesterday, trying to find the perfect card and such, I heard two "fancy, expensive, probably high maintenance women" remark as to how all these Christmas decorations were too religious and not "christmassy" enough.
I almost LOLed.

 :heisenberg:

Hey! How christmassy do we actually need, bitches!??!?!

Consider myself Jewish and (separately) not being motivated to celebrate Christmas - messy house, too much work to put up a tree, and I hate seeing Christmas trees at New Year's Eve.

So this year I've been doing a lot of thinking about the expectations of life.  I've come down on the side of believing that Christmas is a religious holiday for Christians.  Yes, it's okay to have a birthday cake for Jesus, but the day should be spent in thankfulness for the birth of Jesus.  No presents.  Presents should be given on Epiphany when the Magi brought their presents to Jesus.  So I've explained my thoughts to my Christian friends and they know they'll get a few thoughtful presents on Jan 6.

Remember Charles Dickens invented the current view of Christmas.

Same. Indoor decorations make the house feel cluttered. The tree is only up about two weeks, and comes down right away afterward. When Christmas is over, it's over, and really don't want to look at it anymore.

I see Xmas as a repurposed pagan festival.

So I have as much right to celebrate Xmas as the Xtians do.

Kids are teens now and expecting more expensive presents like laptops. And iPhones.

So there's gonna be a big hole in the budget this month. In some countries your salary is paid in 13 monthly instalments, with a double pay packet in December. I like that idea.

Like that idea too. Before the acquisition, used to be able to cash in two weeks of vacation pay so that time was saved and used as christmas fund. Four weeks of time off is difficult to use up anyway, so it was a great option. Now it's use it or lose it, so this is the second year of having to save for the holidays.

It *is* a repurposed pagan festival, at least around here.

It is. Christians adopted the traditions and slapped a name on it...in Rome it was a feast called Saturnalia that celebrated the solstice.

Then you have Yuletide, which is the pre-Christian Germanic Midwinter celebration.
http://thepaganjourney.weebly.com/yule.html

"The evergreen trees signaled the "return of life" and "light" as the winter solstice meant the days were starting to get longer."

Mistletoe...was started by the Druids, who believed it was an all-powerful healing item from the sacred oak tree.

"If you met someone in the forest you gave them the sign of peace under the mistletoe so people started to hang mistletoe above their doorways as a symbol of peace. This was such a powerful symbol of paganism that English churches actually banned the use of it,"

"Holly is sacred to Holle, the Germanic underworld goddess, and symbolizes everlasting life, goodwill and potent life energy."

Not really into it this year...Yule, Christmas, whatever. Meh. Boy will be spending it with girlfriend, and no visitors with covid this year. Hung some lights this year around the house, but that's about it...no tree. I spend 95% of my time pulling the cats out of it anyway. :lol1:

So what did y'all get?

I got some handmade candle holders plus candles and a shopping voucher from Kayleigh's parents, a book (that I've already read), a Target voucher and some chocolate from my parents and a Mandalorian calendar from Kayleigh.

So what did y'all get?

Sugarbutt and I got some mutual gifts, a gift card for Lowes that we're going to use to replant the front garden bed, one of those meat and cheese gift sets, and some handmade ornaments. I got some slippers, a candle, a mug (Jack recently tossed all the mugs  :lol1: ), and some perfume. I also got some cash, but I gave away that cash to my bitches.  :zoinks:

Here in Australia, Lowe's is a men's clothing shop.  Is it for plants and hardware there? If so, it's like our Bunnings.

You did well. :)

I ended up with a lot of chocolates.

Yeah, Lowes is a giant home improvement store and they also have a garden center. It's just like Home Depot, if you've ever heard of them.  :dunno:

Yep, I've heard of Home Depot.

We have two Bunnings in our town alone. They're famous for having sausage sizzles out the front of their stores.

I looked up Bunnings online, and the outside reminds me a lot of Lowes. They use the same color scheme and both have a house rooftop shape at the entrance. Since Bunnings has been around longer, I wonder if Lowes copied their curb appeal.  :orly:

Because you looked up Bunnings, I looked up Lowe's. I saw a store with lots of plants in the front. Their main colour seems to be blue. Their workers wear everyday clothes with a vest on top, unlike Bunnings workers who wear a uniform shirt with a safety vest.

Also, Lowe's sells indoor furniture whereas Bunnings only sells outdoor furniture. I think Lowe's is bigger with more variety.

My book was about two sisters, one autistic (though they never say "autism" in the story), the other not. The non autistic sister can't fall pregnant so the autistic sister decides to have a baby for her.

Reading other stuff at the moment but I'll get there eventually. :)

The thing I like the least is early Black Friday deals. I stay home on Black Friday but I've always appreciated the ironic juxtaposition of how Americans gather with loved ones to be thankful for what they have, and then go out the next day to trample strangers for great deals on more stuff.  :autism:

I never really buy anything at Black Friday. It's just a complete con of a day, another annoying lame americanism that has infected countries over here.

Some places even do a "Black Friday Week".

Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving, so I didn't know there was Black Friday in places with no Thanksgiving.  :lol1: I'm not sure when they started doing "Cyber Monday" but this year I've noticed early Black Friday sales happening all over already and Black Friday is still a week away, so I guess that means it's turned into Black Friday "Week" here too.  :dunno:

Earliest we've put up ours was around middle of November.

Americans usually start decorating after Thanksgiving, which is now. Personally tend to wait until a week before Christmas, two weeks tops, and then take it down almost immediately afterwards. Outdooor lights go up early, but prefer to maintain normalcy inside the house as much as possible.

I've also known people who kept theirs up until March.
That can be a sign of depression, which can be common during and after the holidays.

The outdoor Christmas lights are up. :woohoo: We used to deck out the whole front of the house but that's more than we care to do anymore, so we just did the trunk and part way up the limbs on the big tree in the front yard. It's something we can see from inside the house and it will be nice for people walking on the sidewalk. We had more green lights than anything else, so we opted for green. I've officially named it the big green blob, because that's what it will look like from a distance.  :lol1: Now I just need to figure out what to do with myself for the rest of the day.  :dunno:

We have a neighbor whose yard looks a lot like this for Christmas, Easter and Halloween, except with more stuff so it's even more tacky. When the girl lived at home she loved their house. Her favorite chiristmas decorations were tacky christmas, drunk christmas where the lights are randomly and haphazardly strewn, and old school christmas with the big fat bulbs.  :lol1:

Does anyone do advent calendars?

Kayleigh and I went halves on a Borg one (Star Trek). It's a big cube with goodies inside, one for each day. So far we've gotten a pack of TOS cards, a Kirk pin (I'm thinking of putting it on my Salvos apron), a Quark's Bar wine bottle stopper, two pictures of Elnor - a Romulan from ST: Picard and a pair of Enterprise D themed socks.

I've always liked these but I never see them anymore. I think the last time I saw one was over twenty years ago. I think it's a generational thing and older ladies just don't leave behind stuff like this anymore, and pins and brooches aren't worn like they used to be. My grandma had a lot of costume jewelry, but that side of the family is huge and there were so many daughters and granddaughters when she passed, that each of the ladies received a piece to remember her instead of it all going to one person.

I just have to buy an Aldi gift card for my parents (they love Aldi and because they live out in the country, they don't go there very often) and then my Christmas shopping is done.

Someone once gave me an Aldi gift card. It was very appreciated. I generally don't like gift cards because most of the ones I've received in the past are for places I wouldn't otherwise go so they sort of felt like errands and they sat in my pocketbook for a long time, but I do like gift cards for practical places like grocery stores, WalMart or Target, or big home and garden stores.

It's been nice here this week, even cool in the evenings and mornings. I think it's funny how many homes around here have fireplaces. Ours has wood in it as a decoration, and I added fairy lights in there for Christmas.  :lol1:

I just remembered. There may not be as many fireplaces as I thought. When the roof was redone the roofers asked if the chimney was going and that seemed like a really weird question. Evidentially some homes around here have fake chimneys so they assumed it wasn't real. I had never heard of such a thing.  :lol1:

It's getting close to that time of year again!

I'm going to Officeworks after work to see if they have Christmas sticky tape.  I was already going to buy regular clear tape because although we have tape on a roll at home, it's really fiddly to get it off the roll. So maybe I'll get a tape dispenser too?

^ ^^  I don't think about Christmas till after Thanksgiving

I don't remember exactly when I started shopping early, but it was when the kids were fairly young. I think there's a lot of pressure on mothers during the holidays. Not only gifts, but all of the other planning and preparation for decorations, events, gatherings, meals, travel, crafts, sprinkle cookies, or whatever the season demands. Not having to think about gifts or dealing with busy stores during the month of December made all the other things less stressful and easier to enjoy. It's something I've continued since they've grown.  :dunno:

No Christmas at work this year since the building is being renovated to make it earthquake proof. So most offices have moved out and people work from home now. I will miss the decorations and the food I find. But at least I won't put on a few pounds this year.

And our local radio station started playing Christmas songs before Veterans day.

Ours is always highest in the summer because of the AC too. We used to do tons of christmas lights and I never noticed a difference in the bill, but that might just be because it was still low compared to the summer.  :dunno:
