My brother is a network monkey for a major university - computers, phones, underground cabling, climbing poles, fishing cables above ceilings, upgrading the entire system every couple of years, the works! They just spent two years getting rid of these exact phones. Imagine his satisfaction upon finding this picture of a dumpster full of them.

Oh crap I remember training on those exact same types of Cisco IP phones for my VoIP class.   That technology is always changing, and after a while in the class they taught us on routers that actually had HTML interfaces instead of doing configs through Hyperterminal.   Those things are fucking stupid expensive for what they can do.   The problem is that VoIP uses UDP for packet delivery and it is not guaranteed, that is why crap like QoS is necessary (still a hassle).   I am not surprised that those phones are obsolete by now.   Cisco are such whores anyways.

UDP is exactly what you want for
telephone though.

UDP is exactly what you want for
telephone though.
Yeah for bandwidth concerns, but it still is not guaranteed so packets can be and do get lost.   Some of the codecs sound shitty too, but that is another issue and also related to bandwidth.   Not to mention having to  have a generator or battery backup so your phones don't go offline every time you lose electricity.

Right, but you also don't really mind missing a few packets.
Plus, UDP is so inherently unfair, that as long as it's only
a small part of the overall traffic, you can steal bandwidth
from silly TCP users.  :green:
