He claimed domestic abuse as a defense, which was rejected when he was convicted, but he had been served with divorce papers by his estranged wife and a restraining order barring him from the home because he was the perpetrator of this domestic violence.  Given what he did to her, I think it's pretty obvious who had gotten violent with whom.
