An attitude that gets you too tied
up in them. If you can't laugh at the
misery that is this world, what CAN
you do?
It's like when I would walk through Grand
Central - the amount of human suffering there
(and it's FAR worse in other places), would just
overwhelm me. I could barely make it, and was
crying the whole way. Humor forms a shield.
I see your point and I even do that too sometimes. I try to find humor in some situations that other people probably wouldn't find funny and I laugh to keep from crying.
I even chuckled at something during my brother's funeral. There was a slide show of pictures and when I saw the car that my other brother and I decorated with shaving cream and toilet paper for his wedding and I remembered how upset he was with us, I chuckled and nudged my car decorating co-conspirator brother. We didn't know that shaving cream would harm the finish. Someone brought white shoe polish and cans, but we wouldn't let them use them because we didn't want to hurt my brother and his bride's new car.
I just don't find people who harm children like this funny and I can't see any humor in it. I wish that we could protect them somehow, not laugh at them.
Maybe it strikes too close to home for me because my daughter was physically abused by her special education teacher. She put soap in my daughter's mouth and she tried to choke her. I wish that I had the power to assure that she would never be in a position to harm children ever again, but she is still a special education teacher as far as I know. My husband and I saw her the other day in a restaurant we were about to go into with our daughter. We didn't want our daughter to see her and be upset, so we turned around and left.
I think Callaway is saying that the girl deserves a shield of sorts. Fair enough too.
Yes, you are right, Benj.
