Thanks everyone  :grouphug:

You could teach him a few ASL signs so he can say hi to you and get some of his needs met before he gets over his apraxia with speech therapy and home exercises.

Here are the signs for Mom and Dad.  With the sign for Mom, your thumb is on your chin and your thumb is on your forehead for Dad:

Here's an animation of these signs and a few others--Grandma, Grandpa, brother, sister and baby:

My youngest had a full set of signals she had thought up herself to communicate with us, but, she did not speak. When she started speaking, she went really fast in picking it up.
Now, she is one of those kids who never shut up. Today she was hyper, and talking in overdrive.

When she is really upset or hurt, she will be non-verbal for a while again. A notebook and a pen helps her to relax. She'll draw what she wants to tell. And not stressing about it helps her find back the use of words quicker I think. Sometimes she is in between, she has words, just can't say them, then she'll use he notebook to write words down.

We are working on ASL as well as PECS, but he really just prefers to drag us to what he wants, point and yell.  This works well for him and we have indulged it too much.  Working on breaking him of it now.

He signs for "more" with some regularity, but that's about it so far.

Oh, I can so envision that. My youngest still tries that out now and then. Or just making weird noises. Or... newly invented words. She is really creative with words and word mutilations.
I just refuse to listen. Unless I am sure she is non verbal for a while again, then I will hand her paper and pencil. Not doing the guess thing any-more. It is draining. And I know that it is not needed for her.

Hope your boy will find pleasure in communicating in different ways than dragging you with you soon. He will find out there will be less misunderstanding if he does make use of more precise ways than dragging you, pointing and yelling.

More food!  I'd better get busy here and get my laundry done so I can go out shopping afterward!  TO THE HUNT!  :viking:
