Why is it never mentioned that there were slave states in the North?

It was really union states, seceded states, and western territories, but north and south sums it up well enough. There were also union states that permitted slavery but weren't part of the Confederate states which seceded, but they were boarder states quite literally caught and placed between union and confederate, though all of those but one are considered southern states; Missouri is considered midwest.

That's correct, New Jersey was the last northern state to abolish slavery, and while New York is considered to have abolished slavery earlier, it was only for the older ones and the children of indentured slaves weren't actually freed until 1827. Was thinking Benjamin meant during the actual time of the civil war, what was north and south. Could have misunderstood. If he was trying to say that slavery was legal and practiced from the beginning in all thirteen original colonies of the US, then yes there's no such thing as a truly slave-free state.

There are of course other reasons than that.

The white slaves that have been there for millennia in Europe did mingle in with the rest of the people. And over time traces of names were gone too. So it is not visible who stems from slavery and who not.

Slavery from the seventeenth century was, in the white part of the world, race based, very visible, and it was a cross-ocean thing. The whole world was part of it. From people selling people in Africa, to sailors and merchants bringing them across the ocean, to people buying them.
Mixing over time happened too, but visual traces are not gone. Who knows how that will be after a few more centuries.
Also, it is not that long ago, and lots and lots of nations were involved. Way bigger impact on historic memory.
