I know I've exaggerated the example a bit here, but look at what's happening in the news - because of feelings. Feelings matter. Feelings cause economic crashes, because the stock market is directly connected to feelings.
Feelings are important to human psyche, and political stability, it's not just about babies crying, but about maintaining a functioning society.
I would also like you to provide a comparison between people protesting about plankton, versus people protesting the confederate flag, and the cost, so far, of the anti-water protests you are refering to. What, nobody protests water because of plankton? Well now... just so happens a lot of people ARE protesting the confederate flag - making it relevant - and in the long run - costly.

I am saying - many people's feelings are hurt by it - and those people are numerous enough to destabilize your society.

People shouldn't impose abortion-bans on others - but they do.

And you might insist that people should not interrupt the daily flow of a city, to protest a flag, every day, slowing down local economy - should not, should not, should not - but that does not equal that there exists no problem, and exists no racial tension or racial association.
There's millions of people who know in their minds, not yours, not mine, but their - that the flag is a symbol of racism.

While it may be seen as unfortunate by some, the connection between the rebel flag and white supremacy can't be discounted. The issue appears to be based, not completely in the flag, but the practice of the flag being flown by state organizations. That should be left to public vote if considered a public issue of public property. As for the citizenship; this is America and people can wave whatever piece of fabric around they wish.
