Was there a Jesus?
« on: April 17, 2014, 09:23:16 AM »
OK I am not using this to be provocative on the eve of Easter holidays. Just thinking of this when I saw El Pres mention about wanting to go back in time and listen to what he said.
Obvious thing is that he is alluded to by people that possibly never even met him. People writing in the bible many years after the alleged events took place sometimes centuries.
Many of these stories too, contradict themselves.
The other thing is that many elements of Jesus "appear" borrowed. The old but popular Cult of Ishtar (that was ironically late amalgamated into Christianity) celebrated her and her son's divinity. She was a virgin and his a virgin birth.
But that is not the only instance of people that were known or as I see it, perhaps vying "cult figures" from competing sects.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollonius_of_Tyana, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_Magus, and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_the_Baptist
Look closely and you will see competing talents or skills. In fact, Jesus could be seen as the "best bits" of each, amalgamated into a package of awesome.
You know how movies often (usually for narrative ease) combine aspects of historical figures and then with a bit of gratuitous licence, make an awesome film? Why could they not be doing the same with Jesus. Historians written text for the bible 50 - 100 years later, just combining the characters to make an awesome dude?

That all said, I think Because they seem too hard to wrap facts to fit the story not visa versa, I suspect there was a Jesus in some way, shape or form.  I do not know if Jesus was his actual name or whether he was a much more toned down version BUT I think personally that he DID exist and was impressive to the people of the time.
I2 today is not i2 of yesteryear. It is a knitting circle. Those that participate be they nice or asshats know their place and the price to be there. Odeon is the overlord

.Benevolent if you toe the line.

Think it is I2 of old? Even Odeon is not so delusional as to think otherwise. He may on occasionally pretend otherwise but his base is that knitting circle.

Censoring/banning/restricting/moderating myself, Calanadale & Scrapheap were all not his finest moments.

There's a lot of archetypal language in the bible, so your theory of him being an idea would fit with that.

Earlier today I looked up the origin of Christ because someone I know doesn't like his name of Christopher having religious connotation.  It's Greek for "annointed."

Yeshua, but sounding out names/words isn't an exact science.  Jesus came from Joshua, what the Greeks translated the name as.

I think there was some real-life human model for Jesus, and perhaps he really did say he was God, or God's son.
I wonder how his contemporaries would have reacted to the guy who was on my bus one evening about 20 years ago,
rambling about religious things.  First he said, "I'm an atheist, that's my way of believing in God," then "Don't make the mistake
of calling me God again."  (We hadn't.  )  I wonder if Jesus's followers would have been impressed by this guy.  :orly:

I think he was most likely a real person.

I think he is an amalgam of other myths.

Especially considering the Middle-East is full of myths that fit Jesus like a glove. Occams razor will confirm it, you have a whole bunch of religions that centre around fertility, the sun, crop-cycles etc - and ONE of them - despite being identical to the rest - is real?
Nope.
