Went to check the mail to see if what I am waiting for is there (uni details) but there were only bills.

I know how you feel I'm waiting on two checks

Do you know if they have accepted you yet? If they are taking time it might be worth giving them a call.

Are you sure that you should be giving advice on getting into university?

Given I am in a very prestigious one, yes. Sometimes the admissions systems screw up and it takes about a month for the fact you have an offer or a place to come through the system, which is why it can be worth phoning and finding out.

Received the new generator and spent most of the day coordinating the electric and propane hook up services.  Somehow this cyber idiot (me) managed to get thru all the gibberish of Time Warner cable support and got our email working again!   :P

Yelled at some guy handing out flyers on the street because he chased me even after I said I wasn't interested.

He came after me saying, "I don't mean you any harm."

I said, "I don't think you mean me harm, but I'm not interested in whatever it is."

He said, "That's not a very good attitude, ma'am. Do you think you're better than me?" At which point I realized that he was going to walk away thinking I was being rude to him because he was black, when I just don't like random strangers being aggressive with advertizing. I didn't even know this kind of subtext existed until a black friend kept insisting on it.

I said, "I don't think I'm better than you," and walked away.

I fucking hate people who assume it must be all about the pigment level in your skin.

You have a black friend that thinks that "YOU think" that you are better than him/her?

That doesn't really sound like a friend.

... or do you mean that this person insisted that this demographic existed, in spite of your own naivete.

(I was once very naive. I was not taught to hate and when I discovered racism, I was appalled)

I used to think racism didn't exist anymore, because I hadn't seen it and was taught in school (Canada) that it was a thing of the past.

I've since been corrected, but I suppose like any healing process, those affected think about it for far longer than those around them. Leading to situations like today where race hadn't even entered my mind until my brushing-off reaction was taken badly by the flyers guy.

I don't know if the friend thinks I think I'm better than them or not. All I know is they're really sensitive about race issues and say they're persecuted because of their race a lot. I haven't a clue to what degree it's true, but it seems awfully similar to victim thinking. Like whenever someone does something rude - oh - it must be because they're black. Not because the stranger was having a bad day, or any number of other perfectly mundane reasons. And I recognized this guy in the street getting offended in a similar way.
