Is he truly as centrist as he appears or have we elected a leftwing socialist like his late-to-the-table running mate. I still say that the most compelling reason for each candidate's choice of running mate was to ensure they would NOT be assassinated.

You think McCain would have been at enough risk of assassination that Palin's existence would have been an effective deterrent?

Don't you? (Well, OK, it was meant to be humorous)

How well do you know the ramblings of Palen? She seems like a toxic substance to me, best avoided at all costs.

Obviously, I am expressing my own opinion here. The fact that I (and about half or more of the male population and maybe a fifth of the female population) think that she is hawt-like is of little consequence if she gets her chance to sign more Christian based crap into law.

the reason that obama will be a great president is due to human nature....self interest.

obama has the chance to have history honour his birth as a national holiday.  is there a greater honour?  he has every motivation to try his best to right this ship called the US.  there is very little motivation to sell out to the corporqations like many presidents do.

Hope you're right, my friend!!

I plan to, but have you ever bought the latest and greatest most cool whatever toy/tool/enhancement and within days come down with a severe case of "buyer's remorse?"

I tend to make the opposite mistake and choke down on impulsive creativity until it's lost its explosive spark.  :-\

Didn't stop me from lying awake late last night grinning though, completely surprised to suddenly feel hopeful about this country. At the moment I don't care if Obama turns out to be a letdown, it's still good to see a bit of heroics about our leadership.

I don't know enough about politics to be able to make any remotely accurate speculations at this point about what the future will bring.

The politics in a nutshell:

Is he truly as centrist as he appears or have we elected a leftwing socialist like his late-to-the-table running mate. I still say that the most compelling reason for each candidate's choice of running mate was to ensure they would NOT be assassinated.

I never thought of this before! It makes so much sense! Because if someone forces me to deal with Biden as president, I would probably burn him/her alive. I despise that bald geezer, and his stupid little baseball caps.
George:I'd say I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I'm not. I excel at not giving a shit. Experience has taught me that interest begets expectation, and expectation beget disappointment, so the key to avoiding disappointment is to avoid interest. A equals B equals C Equals A, or whatever. I also don't have a lot of interest in being a good person or a bad person. From what I can tell, either way, you're screwed. Bad people are punished by society's laws, and good people are punished by Murphy's Law

Well, yeah  but that's some fucked-up strategy. "Hm, I don't want to get assassinated, so I'll pick a running mate who's hated much more than I am." One would have thought that the cost in potential swing supporters would be worse than the benefits in personal security.  :P

Well enough to have seen the toxicity.

social democracy ftw :P

Depends on who defines it. Either one of us could do it, but we have little to gain or lose.

Everyone in power makes it work in their own favor, unfortunately. Not much different from where we are, now, but we have a mostly untried chemistry to deal with from this day and on.

I was under the impression that Obama will pick a lot of experienced people to his administration. :-\

I am always very suspicious of the trendy, with-it, chic, hip fads, like electing a young, inexperienced black-ish president and most particularly when the  objet la mode  happens to have the gift of charismatic, alluring dazzle and enchantment, loaded with the magic of pizzaz, splashing the hustle of righteousness, sublime rectification, corrective betterment and discipline to the point of glamorous Juju to everyone in earshot.

:hides mojo:

It all seems too good to be true.

I believe we're beguiled by a "wixard" of phylacterous allure.

How much do you want to know your president before you elect him??  You want to have dinner??  Marry him for 30 years?  I think we know him just as well, if not better than every president thus elected.  He's been campaigning for 20 months...

Time will tell if he's just as big a liar as the rest of them, but I for one, am excited about the prospects.
I came to this world with nothing
and I leave with nothing but love,
everything else is just borrowed.

Fuck it, we'll do it live.

If only that was the case. Obama outspent McCain by 3:1. When he gets into office, he'll have to pay that money back to the people who gave it to him. Voters rarely get what they voted for. Campaign contributors ALWAYS get what they paid for.

Any exceedingly great president can be honored on their birthday.   The more influential of a world leader you are, the more pages you have written about you in the history books.   Dubya will have a good amount written about his presidency, but it will be mostly negative.   I don't see Obama going on Mr. Rushmore though, no matter how great he is.    The man was backed by some powerful lobbyists.    Franklin Raines was the former CEO of Fannie Mae (Obama financial advisor) and helped Obama get a lot of his funding.   Any president would want to be great due to self interest, they all get remembered in some way.   He will be historic for being the first minority president, but his legacy will be how he does his job.   He can be motivated to be great all he wants, hopefully he has the right people around him and takes the right advice.

Obama is funded a lot more by ordinary people than anyone else has ever been. Also it might be worth noting, but Biden is probably the poorest senator in the senate.

it is difficult to be an exceedingly great president.  obama is in a unique position.  it is his to lose...a national holiday in his honour.
Misunderstood.

Obama hasn't got his 60 seats in the Senate I gather - so atm he does not have the greatest of freedoms.

you are correct in a way, the ordinary people gave the money to the teachers who where pushed by their union and own self interest to fund Obama for president. How much longer can the education machine get away with ripping off the working class by suckering them into forking over massive sums of money for white collar job lottery tickets called college degree's is something we will see shortly once all sorts of kiddies are waving their college degree's crying they can't find the high paying job they where promised.

The population will soon catch on those $300,000 lottery tickets where a waste of money and a fools game.
