Title: CBC & QV
Post by: Queen Victoria on September 26, 2011, 05:11:10 PM
Anyone can play, but it is meant to motivate Lady Weeble and myself.

What have you tossed, pitched, donated, given away, disposed of, de-hoarded, etc.

Today, I liberated myself from some old medical bills from 2007, lots of expired coupons and junky bits of paper.

I can't face all that de-hoarding again.  Last time,  i lost urchin's
birth certificate..doh.  I might need it one day to prove he was
born and not hatched, or invented in a mad scientist's lab somewhere.

So, no, can't be very encouraging.  In fact i am going the other way
at the moment and am 'collecting'

I love this thread!  I am going to get rid of a lot of old clothes that are too shabby to donate, and any other random junk I can find, I'm sick of having all this stuff in my way!  Tomorrow is trash day so here I go!  :viking:

i am the exact opposite of a hoarder. in fact, I am constantly throwing away perfectly useful things. I am the least materialistic person in the world. Although, I do know that materialism isn't why people hoard. I just cannot stand clutter. I can't even stand 'decoration' . Everything gets thrown in the trash.

I would butt heads with my ex husband all the time, as he was a HORRIBLE hoarder. It was actually one of the main things we fought about. He thought the solution was to buy more storage containers. That is NOT the solution, lol .

I read a really good peice of advice in the , *cough* readers digest * ( I was on the shitter needed something to look at.)  And it said this :

If you are unsure as to if you should throw something away, set it aside in a special box. If you didnt use it in a year - throw it away !

Same. Was raised in a minimalist environment so it's more about comfort. Had to laugh at the comment on decoration. Sometimes people give decoration 'things' as gifts. They're often nice at first, then will one day look at it and think, really hate that 'thing' and toss it.

Another 1/3 of a trash bag accomplished, almost entirely of old bank statements, insurance information, news articles, etc.

Are you shredding?
Title: Re: CBC & QV
Post by: Queen Victoria on September 26, 2011, 09:35:38 PM
Nope.  Believe me no one is interested in this stuff.  I put garbage on top of it and put grease and the like on it to boot.  There's never been any problem with stealing stuff in our neighborhood.  It gets put out in the morning when Prince Albert leaves for McDonald's, about 5:30.  It's also put in the garbage can.

This Lady in waiting is with Her Majesty and Lady Weeble.

Yesterday I filled two bags with stuff for the local annual charity market.

In the process found the tiny jacket of my youngest when she was a baby. So, found a nice thing to give a better place than amidst the rubble too.

Motivated to get further.

Most of the living-room has been done past year, rooms of the girls too. Now it's my bedroom, where I placed boxes with stuff from the other spaces in the house, and the attic :GA: :GA: :GA:

Donated, to the jumble sale of the local church, 3,5 meters of books (90 litre) and two bags of children's clothes.

The church is trying to fund double glazing with the earnings of the jumble sale.

managed to go through a medium sized bag of papers and also some clothes.  Am deciding whether to cut the clothes up for rags or neatly unseam them.  Hell with it, cut it is.

GO GO GO!  Cut 'em up and don't feel bad!   :headbang:

As for me, I managed to fill three small trash bags and almost four paper bags with shredded
and/or recycled papers and trash, before apparently breaking my shredder ...  :duh:

I cut up a pair of thong underpants.  Along all the seams.  It was a very nice pair, so I have some lovely enclose in satiny-type material elastic and some chiffon type material.  The waistband is long enough to make a V-necklace which I can attach a decorative pin to and the leg elastic will be on my mind until I find a use for it.  The chiffon I may make into a flower.  All this is in the future.  Clean and clear first.

Two boxes of tightly packed waste-paper are in my bicycle bags already, ready to be taken to school first thing tomorrow morning. Monthly waste paper collection.

Got another bag of books that can go. Will go to the second hand shop, can't bring it to the jumble sale anymore.

And onwards I have to go.

Have my ex helping me tomorrow morning to move the bookshelf and the books I will keep to the living room. By then I want all the books sorted.

How appropriate of you to bump this.

I collected a bag of shoes for the thriftshop, some books to go there too. Some appliances I once bought, but that won't work for me, and a coat.

Also threw out bits and pieces from a shelve/cupboard in the hallway. Put the thing in another place, creating a better place for the shoes. Hung the coat hanging thing 25 cm to the left, to create more space too. And, now finally have hung my WWII German map of the area I live in. (Including holes where they have once put markers)

Time to do a little bit more, and then my hallway be less easy to clutter, and much nicer to go through.

And, time to get myself going again, after my mini-break.

The throwing away needs to be finished by the time my girls come back, or they will object, and tell me how attached they are at things they have not seen in two years, and shoes they don't fit any more.

Best case scenario, everything is tidy, when they come back, that makes "adjusting at being home" the easiest for all of us.

I'll be back, for another mini break. One with coffee.  :green:

Hallway looks better than it has done in a long, long time.

Wanted to paint the walls too, but, there are not enough hours in a day, and not enough energy in a Hyke for that.

Time to get rid of the last bits and pieces that are now scattered through living room and kitchen. Girls will be home in a bit more than an hour. That should give me just enough time.

The coffee is good, btw.

And you, dear Weeble, how are you doing? You did not bump this thread just for fun, did you?

No it doesn't.  but it looks a little better.  I got a meeting at 10.45am about the funding for the urchins school.  So i am just concentrating on the front room and have no intention on showing them round the rest of it.

I got wood panels all the way round which go halfway up the walls and i limed them years ago.  I love limed wood.  Unfortunately it shows up the sticky fingerprints (many!) and the urchin has drawn his special spaceships   on them too  (see pic) so i been trying to get the wood back to 'natural' by sanding and using suar soap, and now i am waxing it.

Did not do the sanding, polishing and buffing.

Did remove nasty stains and sticky tape remnants though.

Just hung the last washing, and folded away most of what was dry. Only my clothes still need the folding process.

Are you using wax on your wood Bodie, or oil? Flax oil and walnut oil have proven themselves to be more kid proof than beeswax, in my household. Oil outdoes varnish all the time too, because it does not get damaged by a scratch.

The spaceships of the urchin are amazing. The positive side is of course that he will see space-ships drawn on fences outside, heading for their docking station, and nothing else than that.

Thanks Hyke and yeah i am using beeswax.  It was all i could get without going into town.  I wish i was using oil now. Oh well.

Yeah i find the spaceships really funny.  My mum didn't, when she found one on her bathroom door

Would have loved seeing her reaction.   :LMAO:

Beeswax does smell better than oil. So, that's a plus. When stained, is easily removed with the same sugar soap, or hot water with sodium carbonate in it.

I gave to Goodwill two old receivers, an old turntable, three sets of old speakers and an ugly old stereo component cabinet.

I have begun to set aside a stack of DVDs that I plan to donate as well, but I do not want to be slight with this effort. I only have about eighty. I want to get to over one hundred before I trouble them with my stash of old DVD trash.

Here I am! :cbc: About to watch House reruns and get rid of some more stuff!

You haven't been around lately. :P

OT

I gave to Goodwill two old receivers, an old turntable, three sets of old speakers and an ugly old stereo component cabinet.

I have begun to set aside a stack of DVDs that I plan to donate as well, but I do not want to be slight with this effort. I only have about eighty. I want to get to over one hundred before I trouble them with my stash of old DVD trash.

I think 80 DVDs would make a sufficiently impressive offering!  I barely own a dozen myself!  :orly:

Are you including your Betamax collection? :orly:

I don't HAVE any Betamax, or any VHS for that matter.  :P

So it's all in 70 mm prints? :oldman: I suspected so, but I didn't want to accuse you of being so old. :P

I actually own several 70mm prints. :M

I buy media often. I sometimes buy dvds just because I do not know what they are. I am keeping well over three hundred, just that I do not care to replace them on Bluray. I am reaching close to my mark, after almost an entire week of just going through things, preparing for spring cleaning.

My Bluray collection is over two hundred these days. I have a ways to go, before my collection represents a decent representation of my interests.

Well, yeah. I only buy on Blu-ray these days.

I also tend to use the terms as they were intended. All video disks are DVDs, but certain ones are standard definition, unfortunately referred to as simply DVDs and more recent technology includes Blu-ray DVDs, which, depending upon the compression level, are about as High Definition as any consumer can find.
Those collections with four or six movies on one Blu-ray DVD are about as HD as a standard DVD!

I do not think I have bought a standard definition DVD in over four years, except for an ancient movie I love found in a three dollar bargain bin which I had probably not even yet been replaced from VHS days. (The only VHS I still own are family movies and even those are backed up on DVD)

Recently, several Hitchcock films have come available on standard DVD for near pennies and I just grabbed all I could find. I do know that a NEW re-compression of his old filmstock onto Blu-ray would be amazing, but I seem to be unable to resist them at the price of three or four bucks.

Otherwise, I just buy recent movies I am interested in owning on Blu-ray format. Some of these newer movies have incredible sound! Even cartoon movies can have amazingly detailed and deeply engaging soundtracks.

It is. One of the greatest 70mm shows I've ever experienced. It's a shame that experience is denied most people today. Kids talk about 4k and think it is something to be amazed by.

You haven't seen anything until you've witnessed a 70mm show, 3 ft from a 50 ft screen. The resolution is beyond anything that is available today.

I set a limit of 7 tops and bottoms, one set for fall/winter and one for spring/summer.  Seven sets of underwear, 3 F/W and 3 S/S nightwear, 3 pair of shoes - yard, around the house and out.  One coat.  Bear in mid that I don't need to go to work and I live in a pretty warm climate. Similar rules for PA and the PR.

3 sets of towels for each of us.

I'm going to use grocery boxes for food storage containers, crafts, etc.  When the box is full I will go through it and decide what to keep.   Hopefully this will keep the clutter contained and within reasonable limits.

From Life in the Military - Reader's Digest (a long time ago, the 1960's maybe)

A soldier asked to dispose of tons of old records.  He was given the okay with the provision that he made copies first.

Put it on another data storage device, so there are two digital copies if one is damaged or corrupted. Another memory card is fine, or a thumb drive, external hard drive; anything will do.

But my hoard of old holiday cards
  isn't that important to me,

Was assuming the opposite. If so, then maybe back up digital copy isn't that important.

I've sent to the thrift store 30 boxes/bags of stuff since I got to Montreal. Not sure how much stuff I threw away. I got rid of all the food I was hoarding - some of it was expiration 2011. Still working on the spicesThe goal is to fit into our small house. I've a way to go since I also have a storage box and stuff at my mother's summer home. We have a place called Value Village that's run by the same people who run Saver's in MA, where I used to shop. I completed my set of Tramontina pots there.

At any rate here they were having a promotion where if you got ten stamps on a card you got a 30% discount. I had four cards, one was full and the others were between five and seven stamps full and there were times we didn't get the stamps because we were in a hurry. I pile things in boxes and when we have a carload we go. It's rare for something to come out of a box and stay in the house. The next load has an old TV/monitor, an air purifier, a fan, some kitchen stuff, clothes.

It helped to lose 60 pounds when I got here - I did save some of the big clothes but only a couple of days worth in case I get sick again. No clue how much of anything I have but it all fits in my closet except for my hawaiian shirt collection which is in boxes and which is a collection not a hoard. I only collect ones made in Hawaii, and I wear them all in the summer.

At some point I am hoping to get rid of some of my computers. I have 3 netbooks (1 works), three notebooks (all in varying conditions of working) and two desktops. Not really hoarding the netbooks, just don't know how to get rid of them. One is junk but the other two are semi-functional. One I will keep as a backup XP machine. The notebooks - one I use daily, the other overheats but is a drawing tablet, and the third is an XP machine that I will be using shortly to work with some Mp3 players I am hoarding. The computers - one is a generic thing that I got when the overheating notebook died a horrible death (since resurrected) and i had papers to grade. It doesn't have the memory I needed to play minecraft so I got another one, but that one has windows 10 which I hate so currently both are hooked up to my monitor and I am using the W10 machine primarily for gaming.

I don't have any hobbies requiring large amounts of stuff, I don't collect, I don't decorate.
I think I'm not a really bad hoarder, I just needed "permission" to get rid of things passively acquired.  :orly:

I do not know how to respond to that.

 :zoinks:

Actually, I collect musical instruments (I have many) and professional sound gear (I have half a garage full), but I am not sure that I have ever acquired anything passively. I am generally "on the hunt,"  so to speak.
The other half of my garage is full of woodworking, gardening and mechanical tools along with a few bicycles that I ride upon occasion. My garage is useless as a garage; it is a work place and a storage place, since much of what I do for my own entertainment happens outside the garage.

... BUT, the real question: "permission?"  I do not understand to what this makes reference. You had to have "permission  ..." to get rid of things?

Please, make sense of this for me.

I'm talking about the guilt I've felt for years about the idea of discarding birthday cards, letters, gifts,
also the worry about discarding paper of a financial nature (pay stubs, old tax forms, old records, etc.).
My family tends to keep such things forever.  I didn't realize it was OK to throw away cards from
friends and family after awhile.  I thought I'd have to keep all that stuff.  Now that I'm digitally hoarding
cards and letters via camera, and shredding personal financial paperwork once I no longer need it, I feel
free to throw things away.  By "permission" I guess I meant "the belief that it's morally acceptable."  :apondering:

You are allowed to delete most of those digitally saved messages too.

Only keep the really special ones. The ones that will have you looking at them now and then, just because they are so good. Make it a digital treasure chest.

All the others can go. They will only make it hard to find the ones worth saving.

Yes, I did fill it to the brim. Played a bit false by using stuff from my shed too. But it is packed and already standing at the roadside. No chance of me forgetting it tomorrow. Then I would have been stuck with a full bin for two weeks.

So, what more did I toss today?

Cardboard box filled with waste paper is ready to go away the moment it is paper collection day. Two big bin liners with clothes have been brought to the textile containers. Big shopping bag of glassware to the glass container. Still made a bit of noise throwing it away, but not the rewarding sound it used to be.

We had what I call "junk out the front" week where people's junk gets put out at the side of the road for collection. It happens in February every year.

This year I put out Kayleigh's old rat cage that was rusting and so therefore no longer suitable for rats. I also put out an old computer chair whose seat was gradually crumbling. Even the cats wouldn't sleep on it. Kayleigh wanted to keep the wheels as there was nothing wrong with them. But I refused and took it out to the kerb before we could argue further. When I got up the next morning I saw that someone had taken the wheels off the chair. :D

Easter is about getting rid of the stuff that is holding you back, so you can make a refreshed start. At best, purged by fire, rising as a Phoenix from fertile ashes. But for a home the fire methode is a bit too drastic.
