Has anyone here ever tried it?
-
can i answer in this thread if my answer is NO?
-
I haven't tired it either, sorry.

You just did. ::)

I'm still waking up so I guess being tired must still be on my mind
-

No, it's a type of alcohol that's illegal in the US. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absinthe
I've become fascinated with it now, and want to try it. I read it's over 60% alcohol! :o
I wonder if odeon has tried it? Apparently it's sold in all liquor stores in Sweden.

I know the feeling.

Apparently it tastes like shit, so I've no interest in getting any - they sell it here also. if its a question of getting completely off your tits, i'd rather have bigger shots of tequila or decent rum than rocket fuel for its own sake - at least most normal spirits taste good. :happypuke:
-
I think the fact that it is illegal here is what has me interested in it. Also it's supposed to put you in a euphoric mood, which is always fun.
-

But if you were bipolar you would have the ability to achieve euphoric moods without aid.
-
But people with bipolar don't get to choose when to experience that euphoria.
-
apparantly with ginsing they do.
-
I read the wikipedia article about it. It's interesting. I thought absinthe was supposed to be the reason Van Gogh cut off his ear? I have never tried it, but I believe it is supposed to taste very bitter. I think it is illegal here becuse thujone is a poisonous neurotoxin. I have never wanted to try it, but I don't want to eat Fugu or arsenic either. If you are desperate to try it, you could go to Quebec or Mexico.
-
I thought absinthe was supposed to be the reason Van Gogh cut off his ear?
I think I heard that too.
If you are desperate to try it, you could go to Quebec or Mexico.
I don't know if I'm that desperate. Maybe when I study abroad...
-
I have done two shots of absinthe while on vacation in Europe.
-

It tastes a FUCK of a lot better than tequila
the one time I did a tequila shot I wanted to die
-
I think I've seen sites where you can mail-order absinthe through the Internet. I've heard different reports as to whether its legal to import into the US or not. My friend smuggled it through in a Scope bottle, but some people have told me there would be no problem just putting a bottle of it in his suitcase.
-
I have done two shots of absinthe while on vacation in Europe.
What did it do to you?
-
I don't really remember the taste, I did a chaser right away
going down the throat it felt like fire was running through my chest.
It takes a while for shots to affect me but it left a pretty long effect (about four hours), a long lasting strong buzz which I moderated with beer to keep it going
It has an additional effect besides just from the alcohol... I don't know how to describe it, but it felt nice
-
hmmm...intriguing
-
it's notoriously toxic. can make you blind. don't even think of drinking it - it's really nasty stuff. active ingredient is wormwood, which is a very strong poison.
-
I wonder if odeon has tried it? Apparently it's sold in all liquor stores in Sweden.
I have, but it's not sold everywhere. Why?
-
I think there would be a larger incidence of people reporting blindness if it often caused that in people. And I would like to remind you that alcohol itself is a poison, and so are most chemicals people consume to get high or drunk.
-
And I would like to remind you that alcohol itself is a poison, and so are most chemicals people consume to get high or drunk.
thank you for reminding me. i now feel thoroughly patronised.
-
One shot of patronism for everyone, on the house!
-
I used to drink bottles of Absinthe pop (mixed with soda) in Cov, and I tried to drink it straight once, but it was too strong for me.
-
I wonder if odeon has tried it? Apparently it's sold in all liquor stores in Sweden.
I have, but it's not sold everywhere. Why?
What was your experience with it?
-
Here in Cov, it costs £30 for a big green bottle from my local shop.
-
Nice.
-
I wonder if odeon has tried it? Apparently it's sold in all liquor stores in Sweden.
I have, but it's not sold everywhere. Why?
What was your experience with it?
I was offered it somewhere, tasted it, didn't like it. Way too strong. But I'm not really sure it's the real deal they sell at the liquor stores, and that's what I was offered.
It certainly didn't make me blind. 8)
-
I read somewhere that you're supposed to add a sugar cube and water to it and make it one part absinthe and 4 parts water.
-
Didn't know that. But I'm more of a beer man.
-
I can tell.
-
What is this stuff?
-
Strong, that's what it is. Not particularly good, though.
-
And I would like to remind you that alcohol itself is a poison, and so are most chemicals people consume to get high or drunk.
thank you for reminding me. i now feel thoroughly patronised.
I'm sorry, i just have a strong negative reaction to anybody telling me that such and such is dangerous and will hurt you and you should stay away from it.
-
Yeah, now I really wanna try it. ;D

So if I tell you that eating arsenic or thallium is dangerous and can kill you and to stay away from it, do you feel compelled to try them? What about methanol? It can make you go blind and kill you as it breaks down in your liver. If I tell you this, do you feel compelled to drink some windshield washer fluid, which is 50% methanol? If so, you could be very easily manipulated into doing something that is not in your own best interests.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methanol
Methanol is intoxicating but not directly poisonous. It is toxic by its breakdown (toxication) by the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase in the liver by forming formic acid and formaldehyde which cause blindness by destruction of the optic nerve. [2] Methanol ingestion can also be fatal due to its CNS depressant properties in the same manner as ethanol poisoning. It enters the body by ingestion, inhalation, or absorption through the skin. Fetal tissue will not tolerate methanol. Dangerous doses will build up if a person is regularly exposed to vapors or handles liquid without skin protection. If methanol has been ingested, a doctor should be contacted immediately. The usual fatal dose: 100–125 mL (4 fl oz).
-
So what is this stuff Methanol?
-
So what is this stuff Methanol?
Here is a link to a wikipedia article about methanol, Kevv:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methanol
If you follow the link, you can see a picture of the chemical structure of methanol, CH3OH. A common name for methanol is wood alcohol, as opposed to ethanol, which is sometimes called grain alcohol. Windshield washer fluid has about 50% methanol, but it has warnings on it telling people not to drink it because it can cause blindness or death.
-
I think there would be a larger incidence of people reporting blindness if it often caused that in people. And I would like to remind you that alcohol itself is a poison, and so are most chemicals people consume to get high or drunk.

No, but i am compelled to learn more about them. Compelled to find out the pros, and cons, and learn about the reports of all the kinds of reactions to it.
-
No, but i am compelled to learn more about them. Compelled to find out the pros, and cons, and learn about the reports of all the kinds of reactions to it.
That's good then.
-
Nothing will compel me to learn about something like obviously biased information. That includes telling me a drug is lethal, or a person is evil.
-
Jeffrey Dahmer was evil, Nomaken.
-
It sounds like moonshine.
-
Jeffrey Dahmer was evil, Nomaken.
So were Margaret Thatcher, Josef Stalin and Adolf Hitler.
-
So were Margaret Thatcher, Josef Stalin and Adolf Hitler.
The Iron Lady was not evil, she turned Britain from the sick man of Europe, it is it's engine.
-
Has anyone here ever tried it?
Absinthe can be legally sold in Australia, although you have a search to find where they sell it.

apparantly with ginsing they do.
rofl

You are a tool. I suggest you get a history book.
-
Actually i've already thought about jeffry dahmer. I don't mind him. Then again, of all the things you could convince me of with good enough evidence like, Maybe GHB is too harmful for its potential benefits, too risky, it is unlikely you could convince me that any person is evil. Stupid, ignorant, and selfish maybe, but not evil. Not going to say it is impossible, but it is really unlikely.
-
i don't believe in good or evil. however, i do believe in right and wrong.
-
Not only don't i believe in good and evil, i dont believe in right or wrong either.
The only things I believe in are What you can get away with and what you can't. I'm fine with alex wanting to do unethical things to peoples posts and pm's and crap like that, it only offends me that he thinks he can get away with it without hurting his image, which is the only thing he really cares about.
-
I believe in right and left.
-
I believe in right and left.
but right an left are relative and require a point of reference. There is no absolute, universal right and left.
-
i believe in perception and lifes experience.
-
I believe in right and left.
but right an left are relative and require a point of reference. There is no absolute, universal right and left.
There's no universal right or wrong, either.
-
no, there's not. but there should be: mine.
-
All it takes is a point of reference. I much prefer it to be my point of reference.
-
I prefer to do what works. I don't bother defining a point of reference.
-
All it takes is a point of reference. I much prefer it to be my point of reference.
well, you would. unfortunately, you're wrong.
-
No, I'm right (as opposed to left).
-
My ethics are much like hannibal lecters. But he is more brave, or more careless, or more of a risk taker than me.
-
i'm extremely Left.
Tony Benn and Red Ken are my political heroes.
-
I'm liberally conservative, but left of anything that Bush would think is OK.
-
pfffft. let's face it, genghis khan would have a bit of trouble trying to get to the right of bush.
-
Think ole Genghis was pro-life?
-
his own, yes. anyone who got in his way? very, very doubtful.
-
I thought that was what pro-life meant, considering the number of pro-life people are into the death penalty. I thought being pro-life meant that you're for your right to decide which people should live or die.
-
no pro CHOICE means you respect the right to choose whether you want to abort your fetus or not. pro-lifers are against abortion.
-
that wasnt what was asked, the inquiry was:
I thought being pro-life meant that you're for your right to decide which people should live or die.
so what the fuck has any of that to do with feetus's ???
-
P.S feetus's arent human untill they're popped out so :P
-
I know what pro-life and pro-choice mean, i was making a joke.
-
yea i know sorry just thought i'd add my own twisted humour too and put forward a motion that all feetus's arent alive untill they are concieved... but alas no one has taken the bait yet :(
-
Well, I would take the bait, but I am pro-choice and it sounds like you are too.
-
well i dont care what choice is taken, so long as its explained, counter explained, argued, counter argued and so on untill an adequate resolution is found.... no matter how long it takes, as i am a fairly relaxed individual now that term has gracefully commenced and i am now being a party-whore and the like.... 8)
-
If i vote, i'll vote pro-choice, but i'd be cool with the aborting of the fetus during as late as the 74th trimester.
-
which is after how many months of the pregnancy ? i never understood or was told the concept of a "Trimester" ???
WTF plz explain this shit to me...
-
I don't know if i did the math right, but i think the 75th trimester would make the kid 18 years old. The 74th would include 17 years 9 months, 10 months, and 11 months.
-
yea i know sorry just thought i'd add my own twisted humour too and put forward a motion that all feetus's arent alive untill they are concieved... but alas no one has taken the bait yet :(
Is that possibly because they don't exsist before they are conceived? :P
-
I'm saying that babies have a soul even before you and your wife get together and have a kid. So if you don't find a girl and get laid, boy is god gonna be pissed at you.
(I hope to god nobody took that seriously)
-
Women are killing potential children every month by not getting pregnant. Chastity is murder! :P
-

And by saying no to me, they (and Nastassja Kinski in particular) are depriving their kids a father. That's inhumane in my book.
-
I know what pro-life and pro-choice mean, i was making a joke.
we missed it.
perhaps you should have clarified your position with an emoticon.
-
I was hoping somebody would have heard the george carlin bit i adapted it from.

then find me someone to do the b aby thing with... STAT

I read somewhere that you're supposed to add a sugar cube and water to it and make it one part absinthe and 4 parts water.
When we tried it we always took a small spooon of sugar, dipped it in the absinthe then lit the spoon on fire to melt the sugar which we then mixed in, we seemed to think that was the ancient tradition but I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere else

or you could have just injected the sugar straight into your veins.

Here in Sweden you can buy it in a liquor store. But it's not something that appeals to me. I prefer single malt whisky.
-
Where in Sweden do you live?
-
On the West coast. Not that far from Gothenburg.
-
Really? Me too. Jonsered, if you know where that is.
-
Oh, yes. Than you live closer to Gothenburg than I do, but it's in the same county anyway.
-
oh, get a county, you two... ::)

so, i tried a drink with absinthe in it last week...but it also had vodka, red bull, kiwi fruit, and lime in it...it was definitely the most hardcore drink on the menu...when i ordered it, the bar tender was like, "the green fairy...are you sure?" It was pretty good though, and it helped me get drunk fast. ;D

I'm glad you finally got to try it.

You need to try a pure shot to tell us what it's like. ;D

Did you snog somebody?
-
I can get absinthe where I am but it is “legal†absinthe. Still has the high alcohol content, but it has not got the wormwood in it, which the traditional one did and that’s part of it that kicks ass. Wormwood is a psychedelic that drove the old days absent drinkers mad. The sugar cube on spoon lighting it in fire was traditional from those days, u want very small amounts of that stuff. Man what I would do to get my hands on wormwood. last time i had absinthe someone at the party told me off for drinking it strait so I mixed it with black vodica that was a fun night (i think)

that looks like the stuf,
without wormwood absinthe is just a strong drink (alcohol is legal where i live)
with the wormwood it is a drug, like magic mushrooms. That makes u see things that are not there. where i am and lots of countries it is not legal for that reason (governments don't want us to get our hands on the fun drugs)
-
Is the wormwood itself illegal? A friend of mine used to
dose me with it, and was able to just buy it at a co-op.
-
Artemesia absinthum is one of my favorite woody herb plants. I use it as a flavor enrichment to the floorsweepings we buy as tea, around here, along with Monarda didyma, which some people call bergamot and Lavandula dentata, also called French lavender. I also used to keep some with me in an American Native style "medicine bag" to help with olfactory overload, along with various other aromatic, oily herbs.
So - If I want to catch a toot-train tonight, how much of this plant will I have to process and consume. I only have about twenty or so plants and they are just emerging from winter dormancy. I have come to understand that the benefits and dangers of "wormwood" are more spiritual than physical.
Got any science to share about the hallucinatory effects?

Hope not or I could be busted. What does it do besides add entropy to the outcome of any interactions with spirits and allow us to go unseen?

I don't know, it was in a cocktail with belladonna and something she wouldn't tell me. The first time, I ended up getting pretty intimate with some wood paneling though.
-
Atropa belladonna? A little dangerous to ingest! They also call it nightshade, but we use many nightshades in cooking, like tomatoes, peppers (neither is considered toxic, any longer) potatoes, even eggplant.
All the typical alkaloid poisoning symptoms are possible, along with some of the euphoria. I would be more inclined to think your experiences were mostly induced from the A. belladonna, than the A. absinthum.
Here's a bit about belladonna. (http://www.answers.com/topic/belladonna)
I hope you stopped.
-
Yeah. My only poisons now are alcohol, nicotine, and digitalis (when it flowers).
Mainly a matter of my own laziness. She really knew what she was doing in terms
of getting safe mixtures though.
