No, it's a type of alcohol that's illegal in the US. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absinthe

I've become fascinated with it now, and want to try it. I read it's over 60% alcohol!  :o

I wonder if odeon has tried it? Apparently it's sold in all liquor stores in Sweden.

Apparently it tastes like shit, so I've no interest in getting any - they sell it here also. if its a question of getting completely off your tits, i'd rather have bigger shots of tequila or decent rum than rocket fuel for its own sake - at least most normal spirits taste good. :happypuke:

I think the fact that it is illegal here is what has me interested in it. Also it's supposed to put you in a euphoric mood, which is always fun.

But if you were bipolar you would have the ability to achieve euphoric moods without aid.

I read the wikipedia article about it.  It's interesting.  I thought absinthe was supposed to be the reason Van Gogh cut off his ear?  I have never tried it, but I believe it is supposed to taste very bitter.  I think it is illegal here becuse thujone is a poisonous neurotoxin.  I have never wanted to try it, but I don't want to eat Fugu or arsenic either.  If you are desperate to try it, you could go to Quebec or Mexico.

I think I've seen sites where you can mail-order absinthe through the Internet. I've heard different reports as to whether its legal to import into the US or not.  My friend smuggled it through in a Scope bottle, but some people have told me there would be no problem just putting a bottle of it in his suitcase.

Title: Re: absinthe...
Post by: Draggon on October 07, 2006, 07:30:30 AM
I don't really remember the taste, I did a chaser right away
going down the throat it felt like fire was running through my chest.
It takes a while for shots to affect me but it left a pretty long effect (about four hours), a long lasting strong buzz which I moderated with beer to keep it going
It has an additional effect besides just from the alcohol... I don't know how to describe it, but it felt nice

it's notoriously toxic.  can make you blind.  don't even think of drinking it - it's really nasty stuff.  active ingredient is wormwood, which is a very strong poison.

I think there would be a larger incidence of people reporting blindness if it often caused that in people.  And I would like to remind you that alcohol itself is a poison, and so are most chemicals people consume to get high or drunk.

I was offered it somewhere, tasted it, didn't like it. Way too strong. But I'm not really sure it's the real deal they sell at the liquor stores, and that's what I was offered.

It certainly didn't make me blind. 8)

So if I tell you that eating arsenic or thallium is dangerous and can kill you and to stay away from it, do you feel compelled to try them?  What about methanol?  It can make you go blind and kill you as it breaks down in your liver.  If I tell you this, do you feel compelled to drink some windshield washer fluid, which is 50% methanol?  If so, you could be very easily manipulated into doing something that is not in your own best interests.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methanol

Quote
Methanol is intoxicating but not directly poisonous. It is toxic by its breakdown (toxication) by the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase in the liver by forming formic acid and formaldehyde which cause blindness by destruction of the optic nerve. [2] Methanol ingestion can also be fatal due to its CNS depressant properties in the same manner as ethanol poisoning. It enters the body by ingestion, inhalation, or absorption through the skin. Fetal tissue will not tolerate methanol. Dangerous doses will build up if a person is regularly exposed to vapors or handles liquid without skin protection. If methanol has been ingested, a doctor should be contacted immediately. The usual fatal dose: 100–125 mL (4 fl oz).

So what is this stuff Methanol?

Here is a link to a wikipedia article about methanol, Kevv:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methanol

If you follow the link, you can see a picture of the chemical structure of methanol, CH3OH.  A common name for methanol is wood alcohol, as opposed to ethanol, which is sometimes called grain alcohol.  Windshield washer fluid has about 50% methanol, but it has warnings on it telling people not to drink it because it can cause blindness or death.

Actually i've already thought about jeffry dahmer.  I don't mind him.  Then again, of all the things you could convince me of with good enough evidence like, Maybe GHB is too harmful for its potential benefits, too risky, it is unlikely you could convince me that any person is evil.  Stupid, ignorant, and selfish maybe, but not evil.  Not going to say it is impossible, but it is really unlikely.

I read somewhere that you're supposed to add a sugar cube and water to it and make it one part absinthe and 4 parts water.

When we tried it we always took a small spooon of sugar, dipped it in the absinthe then lit the spoon on fire to melt the sugar which we then mixed in, we seemed to think that was the ancient tradition but I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere else

Here in Sweden you can buy it in a liquor store. But it's not something that appeals to me. I prefer single malt whisky.

I can get absinthe where I am but it is “legal” absinthe. Still has the high alcohol content, but it has not got the wormwood in it, which the traditional one did and that’s part of it that kicks ass. Wormwood is a psychedelic that drove the old days absent drinkers mad. The sugar cube on spoon lighting it in fire was traditional from those days, u want very small amounts of that stuff. Man what I would do to get my hands on wormwood. last time i had absinthe someone at the party told me off for drinking it strait so I mixed it with black vodica that was a fun night (i think)

that looks like the stuf,
without wormwood absinthe is just a strong drink (alcohol is legal where i live)
with the wormwood it is a drug, like magic mushrooms. That makes u see things that are not there. where i am and lots of countries it is not legal for that reason (governments don't want us to get our hands on the fun drugs)

Is the wormwood itself illegal? A friend of mine used to
dose me with it, and was able to just buy it at a co-op.
Title: Re: absinthe...
Post by: DirtDawg on April 19, 2007, 05:05:03 AM

Artemesia absinthum is one of my favorite woody herb plants. I use it as a flavor enrichment to the floorsweepings we buy as tea, around here, along with Monarda didyma, which some people call bergamot and Lavandula dentata, also called French lavender. I also used to keep some with me in an American Native style "medicine bag" to help with olfactory overload, along with various other aromatic, oily herbs.

So - If I want to catch a toot-train tonight, how much of this plant will I have to process and consume. I only have about twenty or so plants and they are just emerging from winter dormancy. I have come to understand that the benefits and dangers of "wormwood" are more spiritual than physical.

Got any science to share about the hallucinatory effects?

Hope not or I could be busted. What does it do besides add entropy to the outcome of any interactions with spirits and allow us to go unseen?

I don't know, it was in a cocktail with belladonna and something she wouldn't tell me. The first time, I ended up getting pretty intimate with some wood paneling though.
Title: Re: absinthe...

Atropa belladonna? A little dangerous to ingest! They also call it nightshade, but we use many nightshades in cooking, like tomatoes, peppers (neither is considered toxic, any longer) potatoes, even eggplant.

All the typical alkaloid poisoning symptoms are possible, along with some of the euphoria. I would be more inclined to think your experiences were mostly induced from the A. belladonna, than the A. absinthum.

Here's a bit about belladonna. (http://www.answers.com/topic/belladonna)

I hope you stopped.

Yeah. My only poisons now are alcohol, nicotine, and digitalis (when it flowers).

Mainly a matter of my own laziness. She really knew what she was doing in terms
of getting safe mixtures though.
