I don't know. This past summer I said that I wasn't going to go away next summer because I found it too stressful this year. But I don't think I can go that long without being by the water. So maybe Summer 2010. We'll have to see.

When were you dx'ed?
When I was 32. It wasn't until my son was dx'd first that everyone who saw him said...uh yanno, apple doesn't fall far from the tree. ;) Looking back, I had all the signs my entire life. But my Mum said "we just called you eccentric and we thought you didn't fit in as much because we moved around so much." Her favourite aspie story was when they sent me to nursery school and it said on my first term report "S does not seem to know how to play with children. She seems much more comfortable staying on the sidelines and talking to the teachers instead." My parents said they had to teach me how to play and when asked what I was talking about with the adults they told her "Mrs. Brown's divorce" (my teacher).

Did it change anything for you? I know for me, getting an official dx went a long ways toward understanding myself and being comfortable with who I am.

Absolutely. I have pics from my trip out east of a really old jail that I went to and the sign that was posted where the prisoners passed through before taken to the gallows to be hung.  :hide:

I had the same feeling. I can fly under the radar quite well when I'm in situations where I didn't want my aspie side to be as noticable but that's because I was a theatre major and I spent years playing a part. I felt like when I got my dx, I didn't have to play the part anymore. I could just be myself. It took awhile to get used to. I had to figure some stuff out, lost some friends over it who said they didn't like the "new me" (whatever, they never knew the real me because I never let them see it). I used to be myself at home, and be the part every time I stepped out the door but then it got to be too much. I had an honest to goodness breakdown in March because I couldn't hold it in anymore and then I stopped going out. But now, I'm at my most comfortable.

I also have agoraphobia though so social stuff is still hard.

No, but Leisha Hailey comes to TO all the time and I missed her in a bar in The Village (aka gaytown) by a mere 15 mins. Le sigh.

An ex-friend of mine used to be obsessed with her.  I didn't like the way they made her character cunty at the end, especially towards Max.  In general wtf was all that transphobia about?

Do you mean the last season? I haven't seen it yet. I missed the first 2 episodes of the season and then I refused to watch the rest because I hate it when I miss something so I'm watiing for it to come out on DVD. :P

Is she still together with K.D Lang? I could never figure that one out. K.D has been well known for having a chick in every city but apparently was willing to settle down when she get together with Leisha. She fell head over heels for her.

No, no in season 5.  The way everyone was always so dismissive of Max.  Ilene Chaiken butchered his storyline really.

She's with this woman who designes clothes/shoes now   (Leisha not KD Lang) She's kinda meh looking:

Then again I don't find KD Lang to be particularly attractive either.

No. he goes back tomorrow. it's a holiday here today (Thanksgiving) which is why I'm postwhoring even more than my usual postwhoriness. :P

He's okay. He won't eat the medicated food although apparently he devoured it at the vets. I have to give him 3 pills a day. Good thing I put in so much time at the animal shelter because I'm an expert at giving cats pills. I think he's getting better because he seems his old self a little more each day but I'm terrified they're going to tell me that his blood panel tomorrow says otherwise.  :-\

What kind of public speaking do you do?
Title: Re: Ask CG anything
Post by: Celticgoddess on October 20, 2009, 08:05:14 PM
I mentor other families who have a newly dx'd (or they suspect will be dx'd) ASD child and help set them up with services and put them in touch with people in the community who will help them on their journey. I have families who ask me to come and speak to their family members about what ASD is, how it affects their child directly, how the family can be supportive etc. I've been asked to speak at colleges/uni's to classes who will be working with kids on the spectrum or advocating for them in school. I also speak at schools to help them realize some of the things that they do which work against the child instead of with the child. It varies depending on the cirumstance. It's all volunteer. Most of my speaking has been at uni's and at schools. I've got the ear of the entire Board of Ed in my region which has been very valuable in the school system and trying to overhaul some of the outdated thinking on how people are working with children on the spectrum.

That's something that is desperately needed these days. How did you get into that?
Title: Re: Ask CG anything
Post by: Celticgoddess on October 20, 2009, 08:28:15 PM
I was extermely vocal in my son's schools (he went to 5 of them before I pulled him to homeschool). But it wasn't in a threatening way. My approach was alway "how we can we together as a team to help X be more successful?" That went over very well with the school/board. However, if there was a staff member who went too far, I had no issue tearing a strategic strip off of them and even got a principal fired for pinning my son down to the ground, on his stomach, and pinning his hands behind his back like he was being arrested. That's illegal to begin with because it's easy for a child to stop breathing. The reason for doing it? He was handflapping in the library. WTF? Or pulling him out from under a desk by his ankles where he was hiding because he was scared. he was in the second grade! Ridiculous. Went straight to the board and she was fired a month later.

As for the famliies, I just promoted myself. I've always been very open about our dx process, my son's experiences, what we struggle with etc. Word started to spread and people I knew were referring family and friends. Therapists were referring new patients. Sometime I juggle 20 families at a time. Due to all those connections, I started getting calls from teachers and professors asking me to come and speak. It sort of snowballed from there.

Is your career as an advocate a full time or part time endeavor?
Title: Re: Ask CG anything
Post by: Celticgoddess on October 21, 2009, 04:17:40 PM
It will always remain part time. I still have a young one to raise (4.5 yrs) and I'm homeschooling the oldest (turning 11 next month) so that's where my priority is.

But I do have plans to start a business in the next few years in my hometown. An indoor sensory playground for kids with exceptional needs. Each room geared towards a different sensory need. There's only one in the entire metro area and I know my kid totally would have benefitted from it if we had access to it. The demand for it is high by famliies and by therapists so there's a niche market there. I love being around families that have children with complicated needs because there's a certain understanding and kinship there and they need a place where their kids can play and interact and not be outcasts in a place that is full of mainly NT kids. I'm hoping it will be a safe place for the kids and a place to unwind for the parents/caregivers. 8)

Post by: Celticgoddess on October 21, 2009, 04:25:38 PM
Thanks. That means a lot to me. I'm lucky that I love what I do and when you work with families who have ASD kids, they overlook your own spazzy side. I think that's what makes me feel comfortable. Normally, I would find it more difficult.

Thanks. I'm more than willing to work with people who are willing to be team players. Try and run my kid into the ground and make him fit into your ideal instead of embracing and working with his own strengths/weaknessess then we're going to do a little verbal tango.

Car hauling. That's why I grew up to be such a gearhead. I grew up around cars and truckers.  I was the only chick in highschool to enrol in automotive. The only one who could do an oil change. I have a passion for hot cars, for what goes on under the hood. Even though my husband and I are separated, the one thing that drew me to him (despite the fact that we'd been friends for 10 years already) was that I was hot to trot to go to the auto show and knew what the hell I was talking about. I love cars. I cream over classics.

What business was you Dads company engaged in?
Car hauling. That's why I grew up to be such a gearhead. I grew up around cars and truckers.  I was the only chick in highschool to enrol in automotive. The only one who could do an oil change. I have a passion for hot cars, for what goes on under the hood. Even though my husband and I are separated, the one thing that drew me to him (despite the fact that we'd been friends for 10 years already) was that I was hot to trot to go to the auto show and knew what the hell I was talking about. I love cars. I cream over classics.

Cool! I was really into cars when I was a kid--not so much now; I used to be able to look at a car and give name, make, model and engine cc's.

Are any of these on your faves list?

1938 Cord
1962 Studebaker Avanti (w/supercharger)
1964 1/2-1970 Mustangs (Shelbys included)
1935 Chrysler Airflow (first US car w/ aerodynamic design)
1958 Ford Edsel (always though they looked cool, even with that mule collar over the radiator)
1954 Corvette
1926 Jordan Playboy
1931 Ford Model A (w/ the straight 8 as I recall)
1957 Ford Fairlane convertible (love those rocket fins!)
1955 Chevy Bel Air

So how long did you live in the States? Why did you move back to Toronto?
Title: Re: Ask CG anything
Post by: Celticgoddess on November 02, 2009, 11:29:39 AM
'94-'99. I moved back to get married. I always wanted to come back to Canada anyway though and raise my kids here. At the time I was living in a small rural town in Georgia and I really wasn't happy there. It was too conservative and too backwards. Coming from toronto, I grew up very liberal  and the racial divide and homophobia was too much. Nearly got my ass kicked more times than I could count for being so outspoken. Where I lived, the value of your house would actually go down if a black family moved in close by. It was ridiculous.

Plus, I missed the snow :green:

My parents are still down there but they moved to a different town and they're much happier.

I've never been to England but I do have extended family there that I've never met. It's on my bucket list of places I must go to.

Destiny has an issue with her liver and a social anxiety disorder. Most people who come to the house think we only have one cat because they've never seen her. Harley has issues with recognizing boundaries and personal space :P

Do you use the Montessori method when homeschooling your oldest?

Do you use the Montessori method when homeschooling your oldest?

Excellent question 8) I do. It's about child based learning so I take something he's interested in and I build in our lessons around that topic. For example, his Aspie obsession is programming and  video games. So we're doing a unit on the history of Nintendo. Since we're studying Nintendo, I incorporate Japan, throw in some language lessons thanks to a Japanese friend of mine and we've got a field trip planned to Little Japan downtown. Since we're going downtown, he has to plan the route of how we get there, the cost of public transportation, figuring out subway/bus routes. We'll have lunch at a traditional Japanese restaurant etc. So really when you take one idea/topic, there is so much that you can build around it to fill it out and cover the things he needs to learn. I try to make everything as concrete and tangible as I can because it makes it easier for him to remember what he's learning. A lot of times, it doesn't even appear that we're "teaching" but he learning so much and actually retaining it.

Since I do use Montessori, it also means teaching care of self, care of envirornment that you live in , and care of community. It's very grass roots, hands on. I find it works well. :)

Works so well, they are partly using it in the school of my girls.

Do you have some schooling resources for the material you use for him? Or do you have to find it all by yourself?

To the beach I suppose. But it's hard to convince them to leave their uniform at home. I think they wear it to bed too. They take the job quite seriously.

Do you have many weird moments at work such as the one where you had an awesome secret mission with the FBI?

I left that job in '98 but we did have a lot of interesting moments. The place where I worked was in close proximity to a slums area so we would get a lot of gangbangers wanting to come in and apply for food service positions. We could recognize them right away so while we did the interview we would call the police who would wait out back for the kid to leave and sure enough he would go and pick up his gun that he would place in the garbage can at the back of the building before coming in to fill out an application. So the cops would wait until he'd retrieve the gun, and then arrest him. It never failed. I have no idea why every single one of these kids thought they were being original.

And don't get me started on some of the clothing attire. I have seen more ugly exposed vag's on girls wearing short skirts, and no panties, and thinking it's worth showing. Awful. Awful. Awful.

What kinds of cars did your dad transport? Does he still do that?

Most of major manufacturers. Ford, Chrysler, VW, BMW, Porshe. He also did private hauls for car collectors and cars being shown at auto shows. I remember going out to the yard once (the truck yard) and in the storage garage was the original Ghostbuster car. He's also done a lot of classic cars. I got the chance to ride in an Model-T. That was cool.

Now he's semi retired. He left the mainstream car hauling side to start his own business with a guy he knew in the field and they're doing private shipping overseas.

He's also part owner of a bus company in my hometown. He bought out his Dad's shares when he was 18 and he still has the company. :)

No, this has yet to be determined. Since he comes from a farming family, it really could go either way. If he turns out to be "that way inclined" I promise to take photographic proof and post it in the Elder forum.

Celtic has to do with my ancestry and goddess was a play on my profession. "Domestic Goddess" Anytime I'm asked on a form about what my job title is, I refuse to check off homemaker or stay at home Mum. I've always crossed them out and written Domestic Goddess beside it. It reflects my personality more than a 1950's housewife title.

I was wondering who you were on WP. As I recall, last time I talked to you over there, I was quite supportive of you and LB after you presented your side of the story of what went down between the two of you. Merely suggested counselling since neither of you sounded happy with the current arrangement but still cared for each other. Tell LB I say hi.

Did you guys ever look into counselling? The thing is, love has conditions. Some of the shit that has gone down between you guys is highly toxic.  :-\ You're good at pushing each others buttons to the extreme and healthy relationships don't function like that. I know how much you love her, but I do worry. About both of you. Sorry to go all psychoanalytical. I just think you both have the ability to break the cycle you keep falling into if you're taught the right tools. *steps off her Dear Abby soapbox* ;)

Title: Re: Ask CG anything
Post by: Celticgoddess on November 12, 2009, 08:45:34 AM
I do agree that the SS deal has been a huge nightmare to the extreme and has been going on for a ridiculous amount of time. They've been awful to her. At the same time, remember that there are battles she has to fight on her own. You can't always be there to rescue her. If you always do that, then she never learns how to fight for herself. It's okay to be her safe place, but to be the one to runs in to her defence isn't good for either of you. I wish you the best of luck.
Title: Re: Ask CG anything
Post by: Celticgoddess on November 12, 2009, 08:59:16 AM
TBH, you have to work for it. It doesn't stop on its own. You have to learn new coping and communication skills, ways to fight fair when you argue, she can't pull the emotional blackmail bullshit and you can't be a bully with the fucked up language you use to put her down when you feel backed into a corner. And it's not good for the girls to be around either. If you guys were going to get serious, counselling is the only way to go. Even if you do it individually. It's better than nothing.
Title: Re: Ask CG anything

I don't see why toxic couples stay together in the first place.  If it's not working and other people are probably getting affected by it (her kids) then surely the logical thing to do is split up?  Although I guess feelings do defy logic sometimes
Title: Re: Ask CG anything

when she breaks up with me she doesnt leave me alone.  she calls me begging to talk and wanting me back.

If she does that then you should ignore it.
Title: Re: Ask CG anything
Post by: Celticgoddess on November 12, 2009, 09:23:22 AM
And you swoop back in to save her. It's a constant cycle of drama. And you play your part in it too. You've said some really shitty things to her that no woman should ever have to hear. And she is a good emotional manipulator. That's the thing with toxic relationships. You each have a role that you play in it. When she breaks up with you, and desn't leave you alone, you enable her by responding. And 'round and 'round we go right?

If you have the opportunity to experience a healthy relationship, you'll wonder why the fuck you stuck it out so long in the one you're on now. Love doesn't = healthy relationship.

eta: Just saw your comment about not bullying anymore. Good for you.

what is emotional blackmail anyway?

She knows that there are things she can say or do to play on your emotions and get you to come running. It's used like a tool to get what she wants. I bet she knows that she does this too. I think i talked to her about it before but I can't remember.

The ex and I tried for over a year to have a third and then I said enough was enough. I didn't really want a third, had to be talked into it and I'm pretty sure I consciously willed myself not to be successful.

I adore kids, I do get cravings to have another with the right person, but this factory is closed for business. I've been through a lot with my kids and as they get older, they get more independent and I have a long list of things I want to do on my own and I'm happy about having more freedom.

Also, remember tonight is alcohol night  8)

:woohoo:

I never say abusive stuff in person.  Only in emails and texts.  I expect thats even worse, as i am so cowardly.  Maybe one day i'll improve that, like i improved my confidence with meeting people.

It doesn't matter how you say it, it's that you shouldn't be saying it at all. Abuse is abuse whether in person or in text. What you should improve on is not abusing women period.

CG, how long did it take you to drink you first glass of wine tonight?

It took me 55 mins.

Why is this important to document?

Because I need proof for when Odeon wakes up tomorrow and doesn't believe me.

CG, why the fuck are you talking to yourself in your own ask away thread

Because I'm spamming. 'Nuff said.

Dear Abby ( :green:)

Do you think it's possible to be both cligy and distant?  I keep having contradictory views of myself and am not sure if it's making any sense.

How come is it that I can be clingy as fuck and terrified of being alone, yet I get tired of being around people, isolate myself for ages and ignore friends for days before responding to texts or messages?  Does this make sense at all or am I just plain weird?

Thank you in advance,

Your Avid Emo Reader
Title: Re: Ask CG anything

Dear Avid Emo Reader,

I do believe it is indeed possible to be both. There is a side of you that craves the attention and comfort but it conflicts with the other side of you which is fearful of getting too close to people or having to be depended on for too many things. You strike me as a person who hasn't made peace yet with what she wants, what her needs are, and how she could go about letting people into her life, but not too far. I fear that until you figure out the answer to the first two, you will continue to fall into the same cycle. Wishing you luck on your journey.

With regards,
Abby

Yes, Binty will be very happy once Binty learns to stop self destructing when she's stressed.  :-*

what is your honest opinion of me? Do you think I am perv?

I've always thought you were a cool guy. Yes, you're a perv but people in glass houses shouldn't throw rocks, so that means I'm a perv too. I see this as a redeeming quality.  :green:

Do you think I am aperv too?

Yes and yes. And it's your pervy self that I keep having to track down all over the internet every time you fuck off from one site to another. See the things I do for you, Soph? Le sigh. ;)

You coming to Boston for St. Paddy's weekend? My friends from Orillia are meeting me there. You should come! :headbang2:

Is Boston where you live? You travel so much I can't keep track of where your home base is. How do you know people from Orillia? They're like less than an hour tops from my place. Straight north on highway 400. Small world. Especially since we're talking Orillia. :P

No, I won't be in Boston. Heading to Minneapolis.

Nope, but I prefer alpaca's over llama's. They're not nearly as tempermental and they're like big cats.

None  But I always wanted to have an alpaca farm. They're like overgrown cats and very attached to their owners. You shave them down once a year and then you can either process the wool yourself or have someone else do it. I wanted to learn how to do it myself. They're softer than cashmere.

That's a very cool thing to be interested in! I wanted so badly to research my family tree, then I found out an uncle on each side of the family had already done is so extensively, there was nothing left for me to look up.

Part of my Dad's side originally came from Germany and we just celebrated our 300th family reunion this past summer. 300 years ago they came from Germany and settled in PA first before moving to a little town in Canada where most of my extended family still lives.

The other side of his family is Cherokee Indian.

My Mum's side is Welsh, Scottish, Irish and British. And my first name is Welsh. My sister is one of the best Celtic harpers in North America. :)

So I have a nice little mash up in my family. It's my Mum's genes that show through me the most though.

With the 'mericans (including Canada, of course), that is especially true. You so often have a mix of heritages while it's very uncommon here.

IMO that very fact makes your countries very interesting. It's the kind of anthropology that fascinates me.
