Title: How often do you change your sheets?
Post by: El on September 02, 2007, 04:46:03 PM
Verrrry random, but thought about it while changing mine, realized that I don't know what is typical, and decided to kill three minutes and ask.  I assume the norm is different for men than for women, but cannot be sure of that, either (hence the two sets of identical options for men or women).

I'm assuming this will degenerate into a discussion about sex quite quickly; I just wonder which route it will take?

Whenever I think of it, and/or if they happen to appear dirty, which probably works out to every couple weeks.

I sleep on the couch, and change the cover when it gets grubby (from the variety of sources you'd expect in a house with three kids and a dog), so every week or two.

Me too.  How often I change the sheets varies depending on several factors.  I would guess every two weeks would be about right, but I change them more often if I need to.  There was a time when my daughter's sheets were changed every night.  I made her bed with two sets of sheets at a time with two waterproof mattress pads so I could strip the top ones off in the middle of the night when I was half asleep.

What I can't get over is the people who IRON SHEETS!

Does anyone here iron their sheets?

About once a week or whenever I do laundry (which is close to every week).   I have a few sets but they generally get changed when I am doing laundry.   Warm, clean sheets straight out of the dryer feel every bit as good as clothes do haha.

My grandmother used to iron everything, sheets and all.  I admit, I iron my white cotton ones sometimes when I want that smell of fresh sheets being ironed and the feel of them on my bed, just comforts me.

I ironed my clothes all the time when I was little when my mother bought me a fake ironing board and a fake iron. It was pretend play and she showed me how to use it because I didn't know what it was lol and what I was supposed to do with it.

Ironing is too much effort 99% of the time for CLOTHES.  They're gonna get wrinkled during the day anyway.  :P
Title: Re: How often do you change your sheets?
Post by: QuirkyCarla on September 03, 2007, 08:07:34 PM
I love the Downy wrinkle-releasing stuff that you spray on your clothes. I hate ironing. I only iron (or use the spray) if my clothes are really, really wrinkly which usually only happens if I don't fold them right away.

I think freshly ironed sheets would feel awesome to sleep on.  However, I do not have that kind of patience and motivation.  I can't even remember the last time I ironed clothes.

They do, actually.  I used to know someone who ironed them, but I'm like you.  I don't think I have ironed anything since my daughter's last school picture, when I ironed the white linen skirt of her dress that had a short-sleeved blue cotton sweater for the bodice and sleeves.

Ironing clothes and underwear and even sheets might make sense if he lived in a place that had some sort of pest, like bedbugs for example.  Ironing clothes and sheets probably sterilizes them pretty well.

ironing?  yes, i've done that.  not this year, though.  i even have an iron.  somewhere...

my aunt used to iron socks, and men's pants.  but then i suspected she had OCD, to be honest - no speck of dust was safe in her house, and if you leaned forward, she'd whip the cushion out from behind you and plump it up.   a bit disconcerting, to say the least.

I rarely iron. I only use it when i iron on pictures. I once ironed on a Strawberry Shortcake picture that came with my coloring book. I also use it when I make grilled cheese. The B&J way.

So that actually works?  Making grilled cheese with an iron?  I had always wondered, but I'm entirely too accident prone to try it myself.  lol

Yes it works. My brother and his friend does it and lot of Johnny Depp fans do it too. But it doesn't always work. Last time I did it, it didn't cook it well. I should have waited longer for the iron to heat up but I was so impatient. I used tin foil though to protect the iron.

I have a friend who tried it (who does indeed adore Depp).  She says it kinda worked but it's less effective than doing it the regular way.

I thought you'd had to move the first time because your mum had broken up with your dad for cheating on her with another man, and then the second time when you and your mum had been driven out of the village by a mob who were trying to burn you as witches, and then again when your mum's new boyfriend tried to rape you, and then again when your mum's boyfriend after that one convinced her to move to Hawaii to be with him, and then again when there was a freak nuclear accident that contaminated your new home, and then again when your ranch in Texas got invaded by hydrophobic aliens, and then again 5 times to lose the CIA agents who kept tracking you, and so on.

I voted every couple of weeks. Well, routine here is taking the old sheets off the mattress/dusting/vacuum clean the bedroom/putting fresh sheets on again and do so every Sunday (every week thus) but ja, I must confess I sometimes lack doing so.. and skip a Sunday.

Do love the freshness of the bed after I've changed them the following night(-s).

Same here. It is easiest to get it all over with at once. If I am busy on Sunday I do a faster version, so the sheets are neglected.

Who would change them daily?! Madness.

I usually sleep on futon with just a quilt

Sheets on my bed very seldom get used

I change them when company is coming and someone will be sleeping in the bed.

I've downgraded to every couple of weeks, but I change the pillowcases a couple of times a week (helps prevent acne).

I seldom change my sheets...I usually prompt myself to change them when a relative comes into town. Or on the rare occasion that my dog decides to pee on the bed (usually after I clean and rearrange the room).

She is likely an aspie dog LOL.

Once every couple of weeks it all gets changed - sheet, pillowcase and quilt cover.

I just changed my sheet early though, it is one I bought online. Jersey cotton, very nice and soft.

Almost €70. Lot of money.

No shops with cheaper options?
I like flannel in winter, even softer than  jersey. It's either really expensive, or at a bargain at discount textile shops. Can't afford the expensive stuff.

umm, i sleep between sheets on a random basis ( i mostly just drop off wherever i happen to be, most often the sofa ) and i change them when i think "hmm. it's awhile since i changed them" or  else when expecting guests (whichever comes soonest)
i would need to note sheet-changes in a diary to be able to figure out how often that comes to. and i would also ned to figure out a walkie-proof method of keeping  my diary in a place where i can  find it more often than not ; both of which would be highly novel circumstances.

you're tallking to somebody who got to the menpause before she got the hang of having monthly periods. they always arrived unexpectedly, cause i'd forget when the last one occured long before the monyth was up. amnd yeah, that sometimes occasioned a sheet-change, not to mention a good long soak of the sheets before washing them.

the feel of freshly-washed sheets next to skin is heavenly, but it doesn't last. the next night,  the sheets feel unwashed again (by comparison)  , and the following night, and the night after that. if sheets that really need changing feel or look any different , i've  never noticed that difference. hmm, so maybe i've  just happened to change them in time, every time?

don't look so happy about it, since my supply of female hormones dried up, i've been strongly leaning towards that theory that they help to mask or modify the autism.  and also  a whole bunch of other things like seizures, ataxia and catastrophes in the gut region.

iIactually asked my Gp if i could have HRT, on the suspicion it would help the nameless disaster that was happening to my entire system, but she said "We only prescribe that for [typical ]menopausal symptoms"

Huh. foiled by the damned NHS again. (who's chief role in my life is to repeatedly say "No can do")

I suggest that if you get similar symptoms ( I very  hope you don't)  majke a big promotion out of night-sweats and such , just in case your Dutch system is similarly unhelpful.

I hope I take after my mom with menopauze. Though looking forward to another decade of menstruating is no fun. But her menopauze went as smooth as can be.

Think I could convince my Dutch GP to give me HRT, when needed.

My wife and I love clean sheets, so no issue there. Regarding the kids, clean sheets is a potential war. Part of the point is to get them to Take Care Of Themselves!

I have even resorted to dumping left over spaghetti in my daughter's bed to convince her to freshen her bed clothes. I am not evil, just desperate to make a point at times.
It hurts us to go this far!

I am still guilty of not changing my sheets often enough. Come to think of it I should change them now and I've been putting it off for at least a week.

Sometimes one has to learn the consequences (or advantages) of these chores for oneself.

Postponed changing the sheets for a few days with a reason. They promised a dry and sunny day today. Still is looking grey and as if it could rain any minute. But the washing machine is doing it's job. Tonight I hope to sleep between sun and wind dried sheets. Nothing can beat the feel and scent of sun and wind dried sheets.

^ I get that all the time with my washing as we don't have a dryer.

Kayleigh's washing was left out overnight and so it didn't dry. It was clothes she planned to wear today and tomorrow - she's staying at a friend's place. So we made an early trip to the laundromat. I tried to convince her to walk there as it's five minutes away. But no, wet washing is too heavy. So I drove. I helped her fold her clothes once they came out of the dryer and wished we had a dryer as her clothes were so soft and warm. And crease free.

I don't have a dryer either. But with the weather of past months my washing had to dry in the attic most of the time.

This afternoon it is warm, windy and sunny. Makes for much softer drying than drying in the attic.
