Title: Over 40's thread....
Post by: driftingblizzard on August 30, 2008, 08:14:21 PM
Is anyone concerned that they are over 40, life is more than half over and they haven't done shit yet?  and that the younger generation will probly do even less, and that confusion reigns....!

Yeah.. I mean there's generation Y bother and generation X and generation Z and we are at the tail end of the baby boomers. It's scary when things that happened 30 years ago seem as clear as if they happened just yesterday.

I want to marry a 28 year old, and raise her right, it would be my way of giving back...

And also, if these people don't do shit, they get pretty fucking constipated. That must explain why there are so many painfully fucked people out there.

Me, I'm over 40 and shit regularly, to save all that fucking embarrassment.

I get that and it makes me feel so old.  I don't know when gen X started but I never felt close to them or the baby boomers though my brothers and sisters are all boomers

As someone well under 40, I agree that largely my generation has a lot of problems. However some of us do show a little promise, its just a shame that they make up the minority...

Did you used to have the name of beatlesoul?   PS. don't worry about age, I never ever thought I'd live past 30.  Really.  Well, I did, and you know what, its not that bad...   The only trouble is that I keep making mistakes that I'd forgotten that I'd already made.   Silly me.

same here, labeled a boomer but they are like from a different generation

my sister is 55, soccer mom, mini van, the whole yuppie works. It was sad when her kids went off to college and than her dog died, she was a total basket case for awhile and married to some guy who hid in the basement in his computer repair shop and mumbled YES DEAR to her for a few decades.

Will be 45 in November. Sometimes feel like it. Sometimes older. Sometimes much younger.

When I was in my last year of high school, I not only thought but actually HOPED I wouldn't live any longer. I'm amazed that I'm still here, and still find myself saying "I'm glad to be alive." Even in this "turkey burger" economy.

As for helping people--I've tried, and I keep trying. But really living means being not only able but willing to change and grow, and most people don't want to do that.  Even while the world economy and energy grid seem to be running down (a la CITY OF EMBER) those of us trying to change things for better still seem to be in the minority. That won't stop me, however, any more than it will stop me from being an artist. Mostly because I can't help myself.

really living means being not only able but willing to change and grow, and most people don't want to do that.

Most people find their confort zone and kid themselves they are forward thinking people, but reality is they are stuck in the past and haven't evolved in decades. They learn a few new tricks with tech toys and think they are with it as they play with the latest gadgits to hit the market but reality is they don't want anything to disturb their lives.

here in vermont there are nut cases running around calling themselves progressives, they are really regressives trying to turn back the clock a century or two or at least decades.

Wacko's calling themselves urban planners want to take society back over 50 years and bring back trollly's now called light rail mass transit to shuttle people from bedroom communities into a central city full of office buildings. News flash, the days of the huge factories in cities employing thousands of workers are long gone and there is no reason to not have office buildings in the burbs where people actually want to live. They left the cities because of the crime & grim and annoying neighbors way too close for confort.

if people where actually progressive they would be pushing for regional zoning and pushing to spread out the jobs to near where people live.

I agree with most of what you said, esp. as regards planners. They operate from a set of assumptions about Homo sapiens that are mostly invalid. That's why the USSR collapsed. Or, as Zappa put it, the thing the Soviets forgot is that people want to own stuff. They don't want to be forced to share living quarters, or forced to shop at the same store (GUM) where they may or may not be able to purchase needed materials and foodstuffs.  Voluntary co-ops are another thing. (See my message re establishing a group home under ASD Advocacy.)

Generally, I find that even the most openminded progressives want to turn back the clock to the 1920s. I'm not sure they realize the full socio-bio-eco-ramifications of doing so.
However, I think instead of physically moving the jobs to where people live, I'd like to see more telecommuting and automation come into play. As J.R. "Bob" Dobbs used to say, "Let the robots do the shitwork, and *we'll* take their pay." ;)

OTOH, I have serious reservations about some tech innovations, such as gengineered crops. I don't like that there's no labeling structure in place, and so far Monsanto et.al. have chosen not to label gengineered foodstuffs as such. Also a concern about gene splices: let's say someone can eat tomatoes OK but is allergic to corn. If you splice some corn genes into the tomatoes, you have a built-in health risk. Also there's the proprietary rights issue: what if pollen or seeds from a gengineered crop migrate onto a neighboring field using more conventional seeds? Under US patent law, the company that made the g seeds would have the right to sue the farmer for interference with their commerce. Monsanto has already sued one farmer for literally "being in the way" of their proprietary seeds. BTW, I've been called a wacko for expressing such concerns.

That's my 25 cents worth (prorated for inflation).

They think what they think is good for everyone. Some people think living in Manhatten is the greatest thing in the world and others look at it like living in hell and it's the same deal with the rural lifestyle, some love it and others look at it as some boring wasteland without something called culture which mostly amounts to sitting on their asses watching other people do something instead of doing something themselves.

It's true we could produce everything we need and than some with ease

I'm way behind.

I've got 6 years left, but I think I should pre-register before all the good units are taken.

I would prefer one near the shuffleboard court and not too far away from the Rascal recharging station.

Eris - I had cataracts removed from both my eyes at 49 because I was EXTREMELY nearsighted (can cause cataracts at an early age).  12 years later I'm starting to need glasses again.

As far as reading glasses, I'd rather use the braille system on Prince Albert.

I do marvel at what a miracle even something as simple as glasses are.  Without them a lot of us would be "blind."  Before my surgery, my prescription was the strongest you could have and I was in danger of losing my drivers license because even with the strongest lenses I was still nearsighted enough to almost fail the vision test.  The intraocular lenses gave me another 11 or 12 years of wonderous vision.

By the way Ann Marget is HAWT.

I was watching Grumpy Old men last weekend with my friend him 56 and her 52 and when Ann Margret unzipped her snowjacket and flicked back her hair my friend told me and her husband to put our tongues back in :P <---- That!

That was some awesome surgery.

I am long-sighted in one eye and short-sighted in the other, something like +2 and -2. Not too bad really but it confuses my brain when I go without my glasses.

I should get out of here as I am 34. :P

All the babysitters are busy at the moment, dear, but if you just sit quietly in the corner and play, we'll send someone over as soon as we can.

<Trumpets softly and stampedes quietly to corner with ears flapping.>

Baby Dumbo!   *melts*   I'll babysit!

You can bring him to the retirement home with you. :P

The residents will adore him!  He will cheer them up with his funny ears!   :)

My regular glasses are like that sometimes.  I sometimes take them off to read because I have trouble adjusting my focus
from one distance to another, and if I forget where I left the glasses, sometimes I have trouble seeing them later.  :duh:

I think switching glasses is a bitch so if I'm at work I tend to stick with the reading glasses, then forget that I'm wearing them and try to drive home using them. Not a good idea.

I'm seriously thinking on multifocal lenses for the next winter. It's OK when there is lots of light, but, when it gets darker, I need reading glasses to do my rounds, but, I can't ride my bike wearing the reading glasses. Taking them off after every delivery is no option. And, when it gets darker, I could do with glasses for looking in the distance too.

Got a few reading-glasses home now. Cheap ones. Not as many as my Dad. But, he is a bit older than me. He has plenty, and different strengths for every occasion. Reading, computer, gardening, driving.

Best tread lightly, child, we elderly have longer memories than you think!  >:D

Just a shame your mobility scooters run out of energy so quickly!  :zoinks:  :pwned:

I'll bet I walk faster than you, I am a LONG way from needing a scooter!  :headbang2:

Try not to tire yourself out you old cobweb.   :zoinks:

I'm in the prime of life and getting better every day!  Go take a nap, the grownups are talking.  :P

I don't need to nap , I'm much younger than you.
Oh and those warbling noises are what you call talking? , I thought your dentures had fallen out again.  :zoinks:

Not my fault your feeble undeveloped mind cannot follow my conversation. TAKE A NAP!  :hahaha:

Not my fault your decrepit and cobwebbed old mind is unable to produce what us functional humans call "words" , I think you need to take a nap it may give you a chance to come up with a half-decent comeback.  :hahaha:

Interesting, it took you over an hour to respond, and quite obviously I produce words in a coherent structure, or else you
wouldn't have been able to manage even this feeble response.  :hahaha:

Or you overlook your own importance , I was talking to people.

Thank you for acknowledging my importance, it seems you are learning after all.  :M

Oh dear Granny I think you need your reading glasses.

I said you "overlook" your importance referring to you thinking your importance is greater than it actually is.  :hahaha:

In that case the word you need is "overestimate," to overlook something is to fail to notice it.
Less time sassing others, more time studying the dictionary!   :hahaha:

Yes exactly my point, you failed to notice how little importance I give you.
I think maybe you need to study the dictionary dear weeble.

Squid just got intellectually owned by the Wobble Weeble Wabble. :autism:

But don't feel too bad, Squid. CBC has pwned my own ass more than once.

Nope , she made the error here not me.  :zoinks:

Reread the bolded quote and refresh your memory as to what you actually said.  :zoinks:

Exactly.

You overlook your own importance.
You overlook the lack of importance I give you in other words , what I said does not necessarily have a negative or a positive reference.

Hence it can be twisted to fit both , now are you done with trying to "pwn" me with a moot point , or can you just admit defeat and save yourself some more embarrasment?  :hahaha:

Ah Squiddy, surely you can see that "You overlook your own importance" and "You overlook the lack of importance I give you"
are NOT the same statements, and that you were in fact unclear in your post, don't be afraid to admit your error.  :police:

I didn't make an error.

Just because it doesn't make sense in your vocabulary doesn't mean I need to own up to an error I do not believe I made.

11 year olds aren't the only smart ones.

A police car pulled up in front of grandma Bessie's house, and grandpa got out. The polite policeman explained that the elderly gentleman said that he was lost in the park... and couldn't find his way home.

"Morris," said grandma, "You've been going to that park for over 30 years! How come you get lost today?"

Leaning close to grandma, so that the policeman couldn't hear, grandpa whispered, "I wasn't lost . . . I was just too tired to walk home."

I twisted it when trying it on and had to take it off and correct the back.  My boobs have a mind of their own and were trying to escape.  Now I need to experiment to see whether I should hook it top to bottom, bottom to top, one on top and one on bottom and work on the middle.

IMO, to prevent boob escapes, I would go bottom to top for a front hook bra.

I have one but I don't really like it because the stiffened middle part with the hooks digs in.

I'm wearing it right now.  Used the bottom up approach of Callaway.  Nicely comfortable.  I will see about replacing the rest of my wardrobe soon.

The next time the Royal Portrait Painter is here, I'll have him paint a picture for Odeon and PPK.

Is anyone concerned that they are over 40, life is more than half over and they haven't done shit yet?  and that the younger generation will probly do even less, and that confusion reigns....!

What a stupid take on life.

One looses sense acuity (a blessing for an autistic, inhibition, and working memory. One gains in intuition/wisdom, which is advanced automaticity in areas of expertise. One also continues to gain in advanced areas of language such as narration (story telling).

If your worried about the finite minutes left, then make them the best. People have no idea that they have the euivelent of a high performance sports car b/t their ears. Most never get out of 2nd gear (some fools never leave the parking lot). Stop winning about mortality and learn how to drive it, driftingblizzard! Its a trip!

Scrap? Mature? :P

If Scrap feels mature that does not say he is mature.

Scrap has aged like a fine milk.

And did not change into cheese.

I really wanted a flame cane. There is a company that sells them, actually, but I read some of the reviews and it turned out that the flames are simply stickers and will come loose within a few weeks of use. It would have been awesome to have one, though. I might buy one at some point, anyway, for festive occasions. :P

My new cane is a beechwood Derby cane. Very nice, but no flames.

Paint should still be sealed on a cane. Some of them scratch rather easily.
Title: Re: Over 40's thread....
Post by: 'andersom' on October 01, 2014, 11:14:00 PM
Yes, it should be sealed in, but even sealed in, stickers could be quite vulnerable, once the protective lacquer gets scratched. Moisture could seep underneath it. With paint the damage would be restricted to the area the damage in the lacquer is.

The reading glasses change was really painful for me. My main hobby requires being able
to read pretty tiny text. At first, regular magnifiers worked, for about 2 years or so.
Now it's a whole lot worse. There's still a tiny window where I can see with naked eyes -
but no way it's reasonable to do so.

I've been to the optometrist and she said I could get reading glasses if I wanted to but if I'm comfortable to take my glasses off to read, then I can just do that. The cost of an extra pair of glasses? No way. I shouldn't have to get reading glasses ever because I'm short-sighted. Well, in my stronger right eye anyway.

My most recent trip to the Optometrist resulted in my first pair of bifocals. Same with the SO but we took to them differently. I loved mine and had no issues adjusting. He hated his and gave up trying to adjust.

If your eyes are quite similar and have no strong cilindrical issues that might work for you, without being too tiring.

My mom had glasses at the age of four (during WWII, quite rare in those times at that age). Didn't know her otherwise than short sighted. Also when she got varifocals, bit at the lower part of her glasses was less strong than the above part of her glasses.
Now she got eye surgery. She only needs readingglasses now.  and less strong than I need.

Does taking off your glasses not take away the benefit of your Irlen glasses when reading?

Ah, I've got my first progressive lenses too now. Took some time to adjust, but am so happy with them.

A colleague of mine could not adapt either. Now she has one eyeglass for looking in the distance, and the other for close by. She adapted to that without any problems.

I went with two pairs of glasses too. I'm always tinkering/working on stuff...the back and forth with bifocals just made me more dizzy than I already am and gave me some horrible headaches. Need to get a second pair of "readers" so I can have one on the desk and one on the workbench. Wish I could get a pair over-the-counter...but my prescription is nuts.

I have progressive glasses. I remember that I wasn't very fond of my first pair, a couple of years ago, but they've gotten better lately. The current pair is great, it's my eyesight that is changing a bit too fast for comfort.

Oh, that colleague of mine doesn't have two pairs off glasses. One eye has a prescription glass for looking in the distance, the other eye does the reading. And apparently vague help from the other eye is enough for depth perception.

My most recent trip to the Optometrist resulted in my first pair of bifocals. Same with the SO but we took to them differently. I loved mine and had no issues adjusting. He hated his and gave up trying to adjust.

I have progressive glasses. I remember that I wasn't very fond of my first pair, a couple of years ago, but they've gotten better lately. The current pair is great, it's my eyesight that is changing a bit too fast for comfort.

I could opt for three versions of progressive lenses. I went for the most luxurious one. The optometrist advised to either get the cheapest option or the most expensive option. He had hardly ever met someone enjoying the one in between. And those who did prefer that option we people with a big difference between their right and left eye.

Wait, I have progressives, not bifocals. I called it the wrong thing. But I love them.

Does taking off your glasses not take away the benefit of your Irlen glasses when reading?
My need for Irlen lenses is not really for reading, so I told the optometrist when she asked. Good question. It's the environment at shopping centres, whilst driving and when under fluorescent light that has me getting headaches and eye strain in no time flat.

I also keep my glasses on when using my computer but even then I can tell that I need a new monitor. It gives off a yellow glow despite tweaking the settings.

I have one plastic lens due to a very bad cataract fix. And the other eye had a detached retina earlier this year. But I still rarely wear glasses, only a pair of non-prescription reading glasses for reading and computer stuff.

The left eye is still improving after the operation, I got very lucky.

Detached retina is one of my major fears concerning my eyes. That would be bloody scary.

Detached retina is one of my major fears concerning my eyes. That would be bloody scary.

We are very lucky living in 2019.

Mine was pretty bad. Once it was diagnosed they had me in the hospital and getting operated on within a day. All on Medicare.

The recovery is more annoying than the operation or the overnight stay in hospital. They don't even knock you out for the operation. You basically need to keep your head in a specific position for 18 hours a day (at least) for about 5 days, and wear a special bracelet that reminds you to avoid changes in atmospheric pressure (no airplanes or trips to the mountains) until the gas bubble in your eye is gone (which takes a few weeks).

Just watch out for a couple of things. One is a sudden appearance or increase in dark floaters in one eye. The other is when straight lines start looking bent - that means that it is affecting your macular and you need to get it seen to pronto.

At least I was better off than the other guys in my room. One was an immigrant who had a detached retina that was years old and beyond fixing. Apparently they had noticed it during a standard medical check at his job. The other was a young teacher who had major ongoing problems with both eyes.

I would want to be knocked out for the operation!

I had eye surgeries when I was a kid, last one was when I was 5. Six in total, the last 5 trying to fix what the first one got wrong. When I was born both eyes were turned in. The first operation turned them both out too far. Because of that, I lost stereo vision. They kept operating until there was too much scar tissue to do any more. I was told by an ophthalmologist that if I lost my right eye (which is the strongest despite being short-sighted) my vision wouldn't be very good because my left eye was so weak. I wore a patch over my right eye when I was a kid to make my left eye work harder but to no avail. Mum tells me I was always falling over things.

I can't sue the surgeons because they're both dead, heh. And I suppose it could be a lot worse.

Thank you for telling me about those warning signs, I never knew about the bent lines being a symptom. My mum and dad both have good eyes though my mum has the early stages of a cataract. I vow to get hospital cover by the time I'm 60 so I don't have to wait like my mum has to to get surgery.

I've been terrified of that sort of things for years and years - the bent lines, the floaters, etc. At times my OCD was in overdrive and it was all I could think about. And my eyes are crappy. I've got plenty of floaters.

Not sure I should have continued reading this.
Title: Re: Over 40's thread....
Post by: Minister Of Silly Walks on November 13, 2019, 06:52:30 PM
Once you start seeing bent lines get to an emergency room ASAP. You can check for it by looking at a grid of lines, if you have a problem with your macular (which can be due to fluid leaking behind it due to a detached retina) then you need it seen to pronto.

I've always had a lot of floaters so I never thought much about it when I noticed that I had more than usual one day, but my eyesignt was still fine. When my eyesight started to rapidly deterioriate a few weeks later I didn't make the connection.

I had a cataract when I was 47 years old. I just went to bed one night with the vision being fine, and woke up next morning unable to see out of that eye, I could only see light and dark. I went to an eye surgeon and they didn't believe me that it had happened overnight, as cataracts normally take many years to get that bad.

For the surgery they give you some stuff intravenously that relaxes you. Still isn't much fun.

When I joined, I was 29. That's a sobering thought!
Title: Re: Over 40's thread....
Post by: DirtDawg on November 13, 2019, 11:37:04 PM

When I joined, I was still "spry" at a young fifty something (I had muscles back then and more hair) and I did not know that I had two other grown children by women with whom I had had intimate relations.

One woman died many years ago and never informed me of our offspring, due to her "going Christian" and turning her back on our lifestyle of the time. It was another family member of hers (her nephew, the son of a man I had had many battles with over the years due to my relation with his sister. I won.) who figured it all out and came forward to me first. I can not express how that felt at the time. The son of my worst enemy reaching out to me. Fucking new stuff to me.
I actually crippled his father by trying to kill him, since he was trying to kill me. Long involved story. Just read back. It is all there.

The other "new child" was with my EX- wife, who I spent years trying to get back to and breaking up, again and again and finally becoming hostile toward each other. Hence, no notification of the coming child, who came out looking just like me and my brother and my other children and all my uncles. He is obviously my child. I just never had a hand in raising him or the other one I was "protected from knowing."

Relationships between all of us now are as good as can be expected. The two have met, finally. I do not post much about this anymore since it has become very emotional over the years.

My son by my ex-wife has taken to my son by my present (real) wife online and they talk all the time, play some kind of games together and "Go Pokemon" when they can.

It has been a long time, here, for me. Longest I have ever spent at one forum site.
I was well over forty when I first showed up, here. Peaguy saw stuff in me that he wanted to experiment upon, apparently. He invited me to join here. I am now living a Beatles' song,  "When I'm Sixty Four!"  and loving every minute of my life more than I have ever been able to before.

At least I don't need to worry about my son ever leaving home. He's a smart kid but, at nearly 15 years of age, it is obvious that he is a very long way off being able to look after himself. Even just getting him to eat food that I have made for him is a challenge.

That may change. My son was like that a 15 and by 18 he applied for the disability income and then suddenly at 20 he had this emotional growth spurt and all of the skills I had been scaffolding for years suddenly seemed to click. He applied for a work training program geared towards adults who face extra barriers towards being gainfully employed and they teach in a very hands on way and not just sitting at a desk for X hours a day. He really took to it. They set him up for a job interview at our local VIP movie theatre (movies is an obsession of his) and not only did he nail it and get the job but right before he left for his interview he decided to tell the girl he liked, that he had feelings for her. She's ASD too. The kid landed a job and a girlfriend all on the same day  :lol1:

But leading up to that, I honestly never would have dreamt it. We were talking last night how it seems that so many things came together so quickly in such a short amount of time. He's been at his job and with his girlfriend since July.

Thanks Phoenix, wow, that's awesome and gives me some hope. And Jack. Almost plussed Jack for the observation. As a teen my son is very much like having a lanky toddler at home. It seems even worse with an 11 year old who is going on 25 while we have a 14/15 year old who is going on 6.

My oldest is 25 and not close to leaving home. He's a spazz and I think it'll be a few more years before he'll leave. It's OK. Only now is he starting to find out what he wants to do in life.

I keep telling him not to compare himself with his sister. They are two different persons, both with their strengths and their weaknesses, and all I want is for both of them to be happy.

Speaking of getting older, what about morning stiffness of joints? Is that me and my psoriatic arthritis or is that something that would have happened anyway?
Title: Re: Over 40's thread....

It's probably your arthritis. I don't have much morning stiffness. Plenty of morning lethargy though. And thinning hair, another year or two and I will probably just shave it all off.

It's my teeth that annoy me the most. I've always had bad teeth. My mother had all hers out at 14, and both of her brothers had dentures from a young age. And I seem to have inherited those same soft teeth. The plan is in March I'm going to see if I can get about 3 implants and keep my remaining teeth, or if i'm gonna have to give in to the inevitable.

Mine is preparing as well.

College is just around the corner for her.
I have been enabling her. I have collected an amazing set of kitchen knives, baking ware, service pieces (all smallish - like for two people. Hard to find size!), decorations (we all like candles), mugs and various appliances for a small apartment.

She has been collecting her own "short use" furniture for a while now.

Going to be a rough time, just ahead.

Osteo in my knees. They constantly grind now and they've been telling me I'm a candidate for a total replacement (both knees) since I was in the my early 30's but of course I'm too young so putting it off as long as possible. I should probably get injections to help but it gives me the heebie jeebies so I haven't done it yet.

I've had injections go wrong so they don't always help. To be fair, it's rare. Having it go wrong for a jaw joint was no fun, though.

They put it off for as long as possible because the younger you are, the more revision surgeries you would need over time since the knee wouldn't last the rest of your natural lifetime. I don't think there's a hardfast age, but it would be rare to do it under 40. I know people in their 50's who have been declined.

I've lost a lot of weight this year and something my doctor told me is that for every 1 pound of weight that you lose, you decrease 4 pounds of pressure off of your hips and knees. That definitely helps.

I left home at age 18. Over three hour journey away from my parents. For a few weeks I came home every weekend. But soon that changed into once a fortnight and less.
Loved my parents. Also loved living my life away from them.

Oldest left the house at 18. Love her, love her to come and visit. Love her to sleep over, now and then. The latter hardly ever happens. But most of all I love seeing her grow into this awesome young woman, living her own life, making up her own mind, growing and fine-tuning her own opinions. Exploring her own cooking styles and what she like to drink.

Loved every moment in her live, from the first gasp of air to who she is now.
Couldn't be more proud of her than I am. And leaving the house was part of that process of growing I to who she is now.

And I expect youngest to leave the place too, in 2020.
She's about the age of your daughter, DD.

Well, my daughter is leaving in less than a month now. It feels odd. I went to see the new place with her the other day and it all became real, somehow.

The boy wants his own place desperately, but there are still pieces of the equation he's struggling with.

He'll get there eventually, and I will celebrate his "independence" while missing him horribly I imagine.

Right now it's just one day at a time.

Exactly that. The kids and I were recently talking about me being an empty nester and what that would look like for me. On one hand, I'm looking forward to being to devote some solid time to myself and not having to be juggling everyone else's needs and schedules. On the other hand, I always sleep better when all of my kids are home and THAT will be a huge issue for me to try to find my new norm with.

I hope you have a chance to "manage" and "help" with the transitional stages.
I have and it means a lot to me.

I like the use of the phrase, "celebrate his independence," because we ultimately have to do that, each of us.

My dad did that for me, by basically kicking me out. I had already been on my own for a few years, hitched up with a girl, then married her, got a divorce, then stayed out on my own. My business had grown to the point that I was always gone and keeping an apartment to stay in for a few days a month was just stupid. I moved back into my old bedroom at my parent's house. I then helped my dad set up his new shop, built everything inside, stayed for about a year, because "he needed me."

Then he told me to just go, move to San Antonio, follow your interests. Make your own way. I stuck around a while, missing some opportunities,  until he told me he was going to fire me.

Of course he was just trying to help me try out my wings, again.
My dad was awesome!

I stuck around until I was going on 30. I wanted to go sooner, eyed up a couple places and passed up a nice trailer and 2 acres in a rural area that I could have managed, but my dad kept having stroke after stroke, and was bouncing to one hospital to another, and me the person that never goes anywhere drove my mom daily for awhile to Pittsburgh and back while silently fighting panic attacks in traffic.

The year he died I was invited to go to the beach with a couple friends, I said no, and he basically threw my suitcase out the door with his swiss army knife tucked inside. He passed away two months later when I got back and there was a mess to straighten out with his insurance and final wishes. I think the sounds of the ocean in my head helped ground me through it all.

With my daughter heading off to college and moving in with two (read that AGAIN ... TWO!!  FFS) room mates, I will probably do that exact thing for a while.

She is only moving across town next month with her "friends".  Why is this so hard?

My daughter is 11. On the weekend I heard her telling our puppy that when she moves out the puppy is coming with her.

I'm hoping that isn't reflective of any plans in the near term.

My daughter is 23. When I was her age, I wasn't anywhere near the kind of maturity she is displaying even though I left home when I was 19.

I am notorious for leaving this place for months at a time, although thinking of it often, and then returning again before I disappear. So I get it.

I suspect more will return since we're all basically housebound and various levels of bored.
