Title: What's in the mail today?
Post by: Gopher Gary on February 02, 2022, 05:43:07 PM
Considering the times, I thought this might be a good thread topic, and one other people might like too. I don't know about other people, but since I hardly go anywhere anymore, the mail has become an exciting part of my life.  :lol1: I've always tried to avoid shopping online except during the holidays. It can be an addictive behavior, but for me it's not the thrill of shopping, it's the thrill of getting stuff in the mail. It's like christmas or something, even when it's just ordinary household stuff I couldn't find in the store. Tracking packages is exciting stuff too.  :zoinks: Anyway, if it's not at my weekly trip to walmart, or my two week trip to aldi, I seem to buy online rather than go out looking for it. :dunno:

Today was outgoing mail. I sent a gift to a family member, and I shipped a couple pieces of art to my momma because she thought they were missing but were just hanging out in a closet at my house.  :orly:

Today I received approx 4 pieces of junk mail (sale fliers) and that was about it.

Yesterday sent off a vintage shirt to Oregon.

Shipped to 16 of the 50 states so far for the first month of 2022.

Getting a package of vintage books ready for a send off to Kentucky tomorrow...#17 here we go. :asthing:

All I got for my mail today was a tax receipt from the Internal Revenue Service... my main package (an ankle brace) isn't in until possibly Sunday.

I received an envelope full of stamps. It was taped up so well that I had to use a knife to get into it. Apart from that, junk mail. This was yesterday.

I only receive mail as often as I remember to check my mail box :zoinks:

But the last thing I got in the mail was my CTP renewal (with the car registration renewal arriving a few days beforehand). I was thinking since they didn't both arrive the same time that maybe the CTP was sent to my old address, but no there it was.

Sugarbutt checks the mail and always has, so if it weren't for him, I'm not sue it would ever occur to me to do it.  :lol1:

Nothing. :(

But I'll take this opportunity to say that this is a bloody good idea for a thread.

:roses:

I don't mind days with nothing, because it's very rare we don't receive at least one piece of junk mail. It's really annoying when everything in the mail goes straight into the recycle bin. I'm amazed all that unsolicited waste isn't illegal.  >:(

I received the replacement dishes I had recently ordered. I washed them right away and tossed the three chipped ones. I was most excited about replacing the missing dessert bowl, because it wasn't part of the boxed set so I didn't expect to find it. The one I ordered was the only one I found for sale in the whole world, and now it's mine. :woohoo:

Today I received the electric bill and offer from another cable company. There was also something addressed to my momma. It looks like it might be important, so I'm going to call her tonight and ask if she wants me to open it to see if it's worth sending to her.  :dunno:

Today I received some junk mail advertisements, and a 50% off coupon offer from a company that does exterior house detailing. The house needs to be pressure washed but it's going to wait until we're ready to paint, and there's other things in line before that. So my first thought was, yeah I know my house is dirty but there's no need to rub it in.  :zoinks:

What are you using the balsa wood for?

I'm eliminating the crap corner. The crap corner is a repurposed remote caddy that sits in one of the corners of the kitchen, and holds stuff like mail that needs attention, Sugarbutt's pill case and wallet, the dog's pills, pens, postits, and a couple of other random things. I'm going to reorganize some stuff, so the drawer underneath the crap corner can now be the crap drawer and I don't have to see all the crap. I think I've looked at every drawer organizer in the world online and can't find anything I think will work, so I'm going to try to make my own customized drawer organizer from balsa wood.  :orly:

Philately used to be one of my rages. I learned a lot about other countries by collected their stamps. Didn't realize how much I was learning at first.

I came to understand that I was one of few who knew where Baden or Bhopal or Funafuti were. Worthy pursuit, I think.

Oh, I forgot to mention that you might caution yourself when using dirivitives of the word which describes your interest in stamps. To uneducated people they think that word is the same as another which describes a sexual act.

You might get some response like, "Duh, I'm smart too. That just means that you like giving blowjobs, right?"

While that chacterization might hold, the intent of actual conversation is subtle mostly and speaking can be dangerous at times. Ignorant bastards, some are.

I never knew there were so many French Colonies. Got a small pile of Benin stamps and I've never heard of the place.

So what happened to your collection of stamps?

And yeah, I haven't used the word but other people have. Maybe to show they're smart? ;)

The electricity and water bills. They were both twice as much as last time (the water because of the running toilet which is fixed now, and the electricity because we've had the air conditioning on nearly every day. It's been a record-breaking hot summer).

Nothing fun in the mail today. Just grown-up stuff.

A shirt and some junk in the mail. The shirt is ill fitting, which is a shame. Will go back to the office soon and have no fashion sense. Needing new shirts, was hoping to devise a uniform of basic solid color button down shirts. The idea of clothes shopping in the stores is overwhelming, so will first try to test another shirt in the mail.

Modern stamps will often peel right off if you want to. To me it would depend upon the paper they are applied to before I peel. Then, you still have to figure out what to do with the "glue" on the backs. There are various sizes of plastic mounting containers available in strips which you cut to length which help.
Acidic papers can affect the inks and damage the stamps. There are little "litmus" pens you can find that identify pH and warn of sulphur or phosphor bearing compounds which could be detrimental to the preservation of your collection. One small line (specialized color changing "ink" pen) on the back of any paper will help to identify many harmful agents which could hinder archiving some papers.
Obviously, The Smithsonian does not use them (they have better ways), but an envelope that has crossed continents, oceans, even vast amounts of time can be quickly identified as to its make up.

Older stamps used water soluble adhesives. Hence the whole "lick a stamp" thing, which has always put me off some.
Older stamps can be recovered from envelopes by soaking them for a few minutes in room temperature water, laying them on a cloth to dry, then pressing them in your stamp albums to relieve any curling. Just be sure they air dried completely before you try to store them.
You probably knew that, but now several others do as well.

Sorry, but typing one handed is still a bitch with a whip!

^ Yep, I've been putting them in a bowl of water. Then drying them. But I haven't put them in an album yet because I don't have the room. They're just in my stamp tin box.

Most of them are Australian stamps with a few European ones thrown in.

February and now the first part of March have been busier than January since I ended up closing shop during most of that month when I had covid. I've lost track of whether I've shipped to all 50 states yet, but if I'm not there, I'm probably close.

Vacuum parts and clothes are where it's at this month.

Ordered more mailing envelopes, but other than that the only thing coming in was the water bill and some sales fliers. Water bill is about the only bill other than the school tax that I can't pay online because their so-called website is a cluster f*ck.

Thinking about finally spreading out to a couple other sites.

I can tell you, as an old stamp collecter, you will need more albums and those pages will also fill before you know it.

Very little is more educating and fun than the study of each stamp and learning the WHYs and WHEREFOREs and HOWs it was made.
I hope your fun continues.

Today, I finally got 4 Jantzen 5mH coils for my buddy's speaker project. He's doing the sawing, screwing, gluing and paying, I'm guiding him through the brainwork.
He will end up with a pair of Pro audio speakers with one fifteen and horn for each side, two-way monitors that will change his music listening world forever.
He's only ever owned crap, but that's about to change.

Feels good to get this close to completing a project, even if it's not mine.

Stamps again! Some from Berlin, Germany. The pack they came in looks like it will be very hard to open.

Some from Queensland which I nearly dumped all over the floor when I cut the package open with scissors.

I don't think I need to buy any stamps for a while.  :GA:

Two bras (they fit really nicely, so that's a first).

A book to give Mum on Mother's Day. It's about how things were in Australia in the 50s and 60s with heaps of photos. I'm hoping Mum will have some stories to tell.

Don't know yet what might be arriving in the mail. My son broke the mail box post last night.

NOT his fault. I had noticed that the big post that goes into the ground, holding up the entire structure, was a little loose when we first moved in to this new home. Kind of put it on the back burner as just one more ""little"" thing to fix on our fabulous home as we settle in FOREVER.

He opened the mail box door last night and the 4x4 post broke and fell over. :yikes:

I am still mostly bunged with a healing injury, so I called to find a handy man to fix it for me. Seems like I found the right guy, so far. Lives in town, 100% BBB rating, anxious to work. Should be fixed tomorrow, if not today.

Good Gods, man, I was stressed about this. I'll just write a check and it will be done. I hope.

Sounds like a great gift for your Mum. I did not know that you folk down south had a Mother's Day. Cool! It is a special day here, for sure.
So, you think having good mail on one day has used all your mail karma for the day?

I might open the box of stamps first, but REALLY?  You mail ordered something as personal as a couple of bras AND THEY ACTUALLY FIT?

I wish you could reveal the alchemy you used so I could show it to my daughter. My wife has ordered those a few times, opens the box and just throws them in the trash. Doesn't even bother trying them on. "I ordered by size. Who in my size did they think this would fit?" She has stopped trying.

My daughter always "tries" to use what she orders, but usually her orders end up in the donation bin or, in a case like this, the trash bin fairly quickly.
Now, I live with two busty women, so maybe that "doubles" their problems.
:hide:

But hey, actually getting a decent fit is amazing.

Tell me more about your box of stamps when you have time.
 ;)

^This was my third try buying bras online. I've found a certain company that makes them just right. I now have four bras that fit properly. I'm busty too, so going to a regular department store is out of the question. They have nothing to fit me. I've donated a few bras after buying them, trying them on and being dissatisfied with the fit.

Tomorrow is Good Friday so I'm planning on it being Stamp Day. I can't wait.

I think I've used up my mail karma indeed because all we got today was a letter from the state political party. It went into recycling.

I have had three people stop by, noticing my mail box looking as if it fell defeated in a lost battle with Time, lying on the ground. Helpful people, wanting to help the New Guy to the neighborhood.

I have been informed that there is a set price (much less expensive than my own plan of action) from the HOA to fix this for me and I do nothing.

I am not used to depending upon an organization to do useful things, but knowing this in advance might have helped to alleviate some of the stress I felt after the mailbox's battle with Time.

Either way, the problem is well on its way to being resolved. Drama Queen behavior is set aside for now.

Wow.
The guy came and fixed the mailbox post; done in about an hour and a half - cemented hole well below the frost line, painted, level, all done, finished, better than new.
He charged me about eighty bucks less than his original estimate. I felt like I should split the difference with him. But instead, I gave him an $80 tip for his good work and speedy resolution.  I love it when people do what they say they are going to do!
We are both happy.

Kayleigh got some Transformers, Bulkhead and Shockwave? I don't know if I got that right. These are to add to her collection.

Edit: It's Soundwave. How could I have gotten that wrong? ;)

Been going through my box of stamps. I have found a place for all the Polska stamps, in my stamp folder. But I'm definitely going to have to buy more pages and/or albums.

There's a Burger King coupon flyer sitting on the counter where the mail usually lands. I'll wait until Sugarbutt comes back to ask him. Things like that usually come in a bundle with other junk so that makes me think it's intentional. We don't eat out, so I'm really not sure why it's there.  :lol1:

We don't have tolls here in Western Australia. The first time I saw them was when on holiday in Queensland. They supposedly use the money on road upkeep. Our roads in the west are just as good though.

Kayleigh got three more Transformers - Ratchet (my favourite), Brawn and Hotrod. I don't think she'll be buying any more for a while.

She got another Transformer - Arcee. I said to her that her other one looks better but she answered that this new one is from a different series.

All I got was a superannuation newsletter.

Did you solve the mystery of the Burger King flyer?

Today we got a big box parcel. I was expecting it, it's a new drawer for our freezer. It's plastic and also in the box were a lot of beads and padding. I'm peeved because the drawer has a crack in it. I'm wondering how it happened. Kayleigh has used superglue on it and hopefully that's enough. I was all ready to send it back but now that it's glued I guess we can't.

I also got an envelope full of UK stamps from a guy who's downsizing his collection.

Yes, it was intentional. A couple of months ago, he got caught out and about when it was time to eat and had grabbed burger so he thought that might happen again. They're actually really good coupons but I doubt they'll get used before they expire. I put them in the crap drawer anyway.  :dunno:

On Friday I got some filler pages for a stamp binder. Only I don't have the binder which I ordered way before the filler pages. I wonder what's going on.
Title: Re: What's in the mail today?
Post by: DirtDawg on May 01, 2022, 08:04:36 AM
You can still work with the pages while you're waiting for the binder to arrive.

It seems to take ages for things to arrive. I ordered some speaker crossover air core inductors back in February (https://www.parts-express.com/crossover-inductors-table (https://www.parts-express.com/crossover-inductors-table)), from a well established supplier and they backordered them. Possibly to ship in July. That will be OK for me, because that is my timeline for getting my shop up and running again, but if you are in business and NEED this stuff now, you're screwed.

Hope your stamp hobby is giving you joy!

BUT, mail order succes ordering pants, and they fit, is really cool.  Shoes is as close as I have come lately and I had ordered the exact same shoes I had before, using the inner labels to identify.

Not actual USPS mail, but my neighbor whose easeway the movers had torn up and we fixed yesterday, placed a long winded thank you letter in my mailbox. He's a lawyer and  "long winded"  is what he does for a living.

It was a nice letter.

They seem to want to explore the possibility of having a relationship.

There's a road between us and our yards are between. "Hi!" if we are taking trash out at the same time, I'll wave. That's close enough for me.

Also, Kayleigh bought a book about Ahsoka for me. Ahsoka is in Star Wars: The Clone Wars most famously and I really like her character. Looking forward to reading the book.

We watched the first two seasons of Clone Wars. Kids loved it, but we kind of got distracted by something else.  Probably anime. My son is heavy into that these days and thinks that everyone should just love it as much as he does. I indulge him a bit.
I've seen the Clone Wars series available on disc. I should keep that in mind as a gift for one of them.

I was impressed by how great they did on the soundtrack and the stories are fun.

I've read a couple of Star Wars paper back collections, but never Clone wars.

I was bitching earlier about how it takes so long to get stuff, but I had an example of the opposite today.

Last night my son was asking for help sharpening one of his blades. I asked what he was using and brought out this nice stone I had not seen.
I have broken a few of mine and I said I wanted one just like his.
That was about 7pm lasst night and I ordered one from Amazon, along with another finer grit.

They arrived here this morning around 10AM. Surprised me!

Sort of the same happened to Kayleigh. She ordered a Transformer - Galvatron I think - yesterday afternoon and it got here today at about midday. She said they must have had it at Perth Distribution Centre for it to get here so quick. Perth is the most isolated city in the world so we expect deliveries to take a while.

Indeed. Years ago the oldest said I'm impossible to shop for because I'm so minimal and I don't like anything. Told them to just ask, and then the youngest caught on to that and started asking too. Am really bad about not spending money on myself regarding wants and even needs which aren't urgent needs, so tend to bookmark things and wait for the opportunity for them to be gifts.

T-Mobile sent us new SIM cards for our four year old cell phones. T-Mobile has merged with Sprint, our old carrier. New SIMs will allow for better performance, they say. Only problem I ever have is when we are in a park with giant trees between us and the towers. I often get not even one full bar in the forests. Even goofing with my game is not possible. I play E&P.

I want to upgrade! Just not quite there yet.

But there are instructions on the website we are supposed to follow to do it all ourselves. I've done it to other phones many times when I was working at BB. I have lost our little "keys" though. Another casualty of our recent move. Finding a paper clip or a needle small enough is a hassle.

I would have tipped my hat to them if they had sent keys with the new SIM cards.

I got two really soft hoodies today. One pink, one pale green. They were from the U.S. so they took a while to get here. Just in time for winter. I'm hoping it will get cold enough to wear them.

Speaking of the U.S., the stamps I received from a friend there have opened my eyes to different parts of the world. About 80% of them have homes in my albums now. Other people who have sent me stamps could learn a thing or two from my American friend on how to pack such things.

Well, Renaeden, if something delicate has to cross an ocean, even in an airplane at 6 miles up, there should be something capable of absorbing moisture enclosed in the packaging. Not because of the flight over the ocean. Ship, yeah!
But because of the ground transfers and temperature differentials.

I learned that unpacking crates containing seven hundred pound grand pianos, when I was younger.

It sounds like your friend has done these things before.

Inspections can be a really good thing, but my interpretation of your  "tone"  makes it sound scary.

We had many inspections before we bought this new home. Many were required and I paid for shiploads more on my own just to confirm the "Official" work that was done.

Finally got my plates for my car. Now I'm mostly legal again. Still working on address changes in many places, mainly license bureau at this point, still. They addressed my plates to my old house, but my work with the USPS was enough for them and the post office corrected the mailing.

The branch sent me a brand new plate for my car last year, which usually are to be used for five years here.
Oddly, they sent me a new plate this year also, thus the additional delay, I suppose.

BUT, WHY!!??!!

Getting our driver licenses updated has turned into a minor nightmare. So, I am not yet an upstanding cictzen again, but I have really tried to be.
As I mentioned before, I need some help from the legal authority to get legal!!

It is scary. I like the house to be perfectly clean before an inspection (we have them every six months) but Kayleigh doesn't give a shit. So her bedroom barely passes. This time there's the matter of the ceiling in her room where there was a water leak in the middle of the night and I had to call emergency maintenance to come and fix it. They did but there's a lot of water damage plus a hole in the ceiling. On inspection day there shall be some discussion on how it should be repaired.

When I get paid next, I'm going to order another freezer drawer so Kayleigh can have another present, heheh. They're $70 each, not cheap.

Just got junk mail today. Had a quick look but nothing great so it gets recycled.

New fidget toys. They come as cubes and apparently can be turned into 72 different shapes. I bought one for Kayleigh and one for my stepdad.

I got a record vacuum system today. Took a while to get here, but it will help with my album cleaning when I bring in second hand LPs.

Lots and lots of boobs! :green:

Seriously, when I work at my cleaning job I get very sweaty and when I have a shower, afterwards I change into a clean bra. I've been buying bras mostly so I have a clean bra every day and am not washing them all the time.

My wife has a really hot hard job, too and she has finally gotten to the point where she has enough to go all week and just wash on the weekends.
Only problem is that they don't last long at her UPS job. She's fairly large and "the girls" take quite a beating! She's always buying new bras.

I keep telling her that she only needs one good bra that comes off easy and a mountain of chocolate.

It turned out to be the present I bought for Kayleigh that came in the mail yesterday. I'm not sure why the postie put a notice about picking it up in the letterbox. She got a fidget toy kit. Most of the pieces are metal, like there's a link of bike chain to fidget with. It's from Kaiko, an Aussie company, started by an 11 year-old boy who's autistic and dyslexic. He wanted something durable and quiet to fidget with so he made them himself.

It's a cajun trinity seasoning. It's a mixture of dried onion, bell peppers, celery and garlic flakes. There's also another hot spicy spice mixture he likes that I can find in the stores here, but I think cajun spices in general are fairly regional in their availability though.  :dunno:

From Finland? Cool.

Delivery guy took advantage of the side fence being missing when he delivered a parcel to the business next door. Once he finished there, he crossed the property border and knocked on our back door to deliver a parcel to Kayleigh.

When Kayleigh told me what happened, I said that he shouldn't have done that. Kayleigh agreed.

I got my Indiana version about two weeks ago.
If they have five billion dollars in surplus state budget, they need to cut down taxing us a bit and send some of it back to the tax payers.
 :MLA:

I don't get much political crap in the mail, but right now, you can not look in any direction without seeing twenty or so signs polluting the view literally everywhere.

One benefit of a HOA is that our neighborhood does not allow political signs to be posted in our yards or any signs except for those doing work on a house at the time of the work, but still only that with homeowners consent.

Just about everywhere else, FUCK! It's ugly.

We have been credit card bill free for over fifteen years, until I went to buy a mower a few months back.
I thought I was signing up for one of those "points cards" that gets you a discount on certain items, but I had put my new mower on credit.
I'm just going with it, but I think they did this kind of sneaky. It was only $700 but, I was prepared to pay with my debit card, straight out of my checking account.
They won't make any money off me, because the thing is one year free of interest. I'll pay the thing off with the next payment.

We've gotten them from insurance recently. Talk about a rooster tooth occurrence!

Indiana gets a little pissy about big companies taking its citezens to a bend over fest. Makes them keep it honest if they want to do business here.

I have been lucky so far and not gotten much junk political stuff in the mail, but today, I got the latest "Epoch Times" straight into my mailbox via USPS.

If you do not know what that garbage is, Google  "Falun Gong"  and decide for yourself if this is what you want to read.

Actually I did read some and even more of the headlines. This shows how stupid those people think we are.
Biggest problem is that there is a huge swath of America that already think this way and made up bullshit like this fans their fires.

A parcel from my mum.
From Finland? Cool.

I visited her this summer. She's got tons of film negatives lying around that she doesn't want to keep. I told her to send them all to me. These are family photos and I have a decent scanner. Ever since, she's been sending me packages.

A new desk chair arrived for the boy, it's a gift from the girl. A couple of days ago she and I were talking and I was saying his christmas gift was going to be a toss up between new bedding or a new chair. She said she was getting him the chair, but I said no because they agreed years ago to stop buying each other gifts and I didn't want him to feel awkward. She said, no not for christmas, it's for right now just because, it will be there is two days. He was so surprised and excited, he assembled it right away and then called her to show it to her and thank her. Then when they were done talking, she and I talked for another hour.  :lol1:

We got a disturbing large bill for my wife's recent hospital stay and treatments.

Apparently, some of the prescribed infusions were not considered as necessary to the insurance company, but elective. Insurance does not cover something the medical consumer decides to use, even when the doctors recommend them.
We never knew that this might be an issue.

Coming up on about five thousand dollars out of pocket to save my wife's life a few months back.

Our postal workers are "whipped" into delivering parcels on Sundays these days.

Sadly, I ordered some sanding discs from Amazon on a Thursday, expecting next day "Prime" service and there is some delay. So, the same guy (Mike, possibly needing the overtime) who delivers our daily letter mail is out on a Sunday bringing my Amazon "delayed" parcel to my house.
Great!

They made excuses right from the start about why I wouldn't have it soon. First, they had to get a certain amount of orders the same as mine before they would start making them (the actual caps or just the embroidering, I don't know), then their company was closing down and they were looking for another to take their work on. Of course this took ages. And ages.

I think a Dutch company took over because that's what was written as the sender on the package. Not the company name, but the location. I had given up on ever getting it. It was meant for a present for Kayleigh's birthday in June last year.

i know those green square scotchbrite dish scrubbers are good for getting cat hair off furniture. I've never tried on a blanket but it seems like it would work if it were held down. Just rub it in circles. If you don't have one, the scrubby side of a dish sponge is basically the same thing.

I had never thought of using a dish scrubber or sponge before, thanks for the tip. :)  I have a device I can't explain that gets cat hair off cushions and furniture by just running it up and down. Cat hair (or human hair) collects in the back of it and can be easily gathered up and thrown out.

That's an old school trick I learned over thirty years ago. My first job out of highschool was residential cleaning and one of my clients had a hairy cat chair. My boss taught me the dish scrubber trick to deal with it. That fancy modern device you have might be a better option.  :lol1:

You know what when I was a kid I had more than a few transformers, the ones they make now are pretty expensive and maybe it's just an inflation story. All toys seem to be over priced now in the stores

I'm more or less right now into masters of the universe, teenage mutant ninja turtles and a little godzilla/king kong

So many I have left to collect

I received a shower curtain liner for the hall bath.  :orly: The boy likes a crystal clear shower curtain, but I insist on also hanging a fabric shower curtain that looks good. I hang them on separate rods so he can be on the lookout out for psychos while bathing, and the bathroom can still look nice the rest of the time. The current clear one has some soap scum built up on it. I ordered a new one because my momma is coming for a visit, but I'm certain the boy will be happy for it too.  :lol1:

One of my quarterly earnings statements, maybe early by a few days. Hmmm. I have not opened it.

But most hugely anticipated, a variety of specialty packs of seeds for spring planting. Still too early for some, but perfect for the more hardy "giant zinnias" I had ordered. Supposed to reach five to six feet tall.

The soil is prepared or would that be pre-pre-prepared. I've dug out there since the fall, "preparing" and boning up. A little blooding as well, since blood meal and bone meal have been in the ground since about last October, feeding my worms, them leaving thier leavings.
WTF, did you think worms were vegan or something?

I am ready to make the best use of tomorrow's expected good weather.

We got one of those recently also.
Electricity is our biggest utility bill, more than triple our water or gas, more than ten times our waste bill.
Cable and cell service are right up there, too. Each one almost half the electric bill.
I wish I could downgrade some of that, but I enjoy my streaming programs.

A few years ago there was a considerable drop in the cost of electricity here. Even after all this time, I'm still impressed by the bills, because when does that ever happen, something gets cheaper? Never, that's when. I'll have to wait to see what the increase means for us.  :dunno:

Everything is always three to five business days with the USPS (our postal service).

Your order is processed in three to five days.
Shipping your order takes three to five days.
Delivery of your order takes three to five days.

... and after three weeks, full joy.
This is supposed to be convenient!

I received a bastard and a half bastard.
I never expected them to go USPS, but my order came early, too.

They are files I ordered. Bastard is just the name they use to describe the type of cut they can do. A bastard can cut in both directions and a half bastard only cuts on the push stroke. Half bastards can be very aggressive! Mine is a course half bastard. Extremely aggressive cut.
The bastard is meant for more refined shaping of metals.

If I am wrong, blame the Nicholson website for that description. Nicholson files have always been the best I have used, so I got two more to replace the worn out ones I have had for so many years.

Five rainbow infinity pins. My friend makes them as an autism pride symbol, and had sent me one. The cub immediately adopted it for his bulldozer shirt because it looks like the "everything" boost in Mario Kart and he wanted his bulldozer to be a kart.

Cue tantrum when we lost it.

My kind friend is attempting to ensure there is no repeat of the tantrum because I will have plenty on hand. Only problem is the cub was there when the package arrived, and I dropped it and all five spilled out, so he saw how many extras there were.

Now his bulldozer has five boosts all at the same time.  :zombiefuck:

There are 12 points in total. If you get all 12, you lose your driver's licence for a year (I think). Points are reset to zero after 5 years (again I think). I think Charlotte would know more than I do. Not that she's a speeder, I just think she just knows more about this sort of thing in general. And also, she lives in a different state to me so it may be different there.

People's driving rights and the cost of their car insurance aren't affected by their driving record? There's a point system here too, or at least something along that lines, but I have no clue what a person has to do to get their license revoked, except for driving drunk or something. I've had one ticket since I moved here but I had the option to take an online course to avoid the points on my driving record. I opted to do that because otherwise my insurance would have gone up.  :dunno:

The only way I know of that the cost of car insurance is raised is if you get into a car crash that's your fault. Because your insurance has to pay to fix not only your car but all the other cars that got damage.

I suppose if you lost your licence and then got more insurance after the year is up, your premiums would be higher.

The main car bill is for registration, that's a stinker because it costs so much.

I think those people must buy mailing lists or something.

I still get offers to sell our old house. I tell them to drive by, inspect the place and make me a real offer.

That house no longer exists! I saw them tear it into shreds with a huge excavator and haul it away in a fleet of dumptrucks.

$10 dollar water bill is scary?

Ours is usually three times that, except in summer when we run the sprinkler system, which leads to $50 dollar water bills.

One thing I think is BS is that they charge us on the same bill a percentage of water usage for sewage (flushing toilets, washing dishes) disposal. Even though half of our water goes onto the garden and grass, we still get a bump for the sewage part of the bill.

Sounds like Mafia crap to me, but we have to pay it!

I was joking because it's not much at all. I don't think we have to pay for sewage disposal. And we don't have to pay the huge annual water bill that homeowners get here.

It was not the normal USPS guy who comes in the afternoon, but a larger truck.
I had ordered some CD shelving from Amazon. I have too many CDs to fit in one room, but if I can have a thousand of my favorites handy, all is better.

This guy struggled with no wheels or any aids to scrub my heavy package to the door. I figured UPS, Fed-Ex or even Amazon Home delivery would have brought the thing.
But USPS? Poor guy!

So, I have some assembly work to do and I will have a selection of Quick Grab CDs in my listening room. It will also serve as a diffusion panel to improve acoustics somewhat over just a plain flat wall.

My newly restored driver's license. My current older one is expiring in October this year.

I went full MAGA and got the Star license, which will allow me to fly in the future if I want and I can rent a car with my newly acquired credential.
It has not started yet, but after May, 2025 (if memory serves), no one without the new ID will be able to board a commercial airline or many of the other things taken for granted as Free Americans. (Thank you Herr Trumpskisteinenheimer and associates)

Even opening a new bank account will be restricted to those with "proper" ID.
I have done so just about six months back, since I was selling off molybdenum stocks then and needed a secure new place for those dividends to land from foreign investments. Hoops are lowered with the new ID standard.

Anyway, I can prove that I am an upstanding citizen with all my proper papers in order, in the face of any Nazi liberal government official I encounter.

 :headbang2:

Most disturbing to me is the new picture.

Except for the, half a foot past shoulder, length hair and the horse hand measure past my collarbone of my wild beard, I look almost exactly like my mother's father as I remember him just before his death.
My grandfather (all German on that side of the family) was a hard man and a binge drinker. Sober for most of the time, but would disappear into an alcohol coma for a week or so every few months. Hard worker when sober and expected all to keep up with him. Tough for anyone to keep up. A very hard man to deal with.

I loved him dearly! I learned so much in the short time I knew him! He died when I was eighteen years old.

I look almost exactly like him with my age showing so strongly.

Kind of glad I quit using alcohol about ten or twelve years ago. Can't remember exactly when, but that's not the point. The point is, as much as I look like him, I am not the same as he was.

I have had time to digest this latest from my mom. I thought at first that she had forgotten that she had already sent me a huge family album of pics going back to the 1850s when my family first came to Texas. Texas Statehood was only four or five years old when my family first came to that barren, but dangerous land, still running wild with Indians and Mexican bandit parties, invading any settlement of travelers.
Somehow my folks made a life there and kept it going.

What she sent me was a bit of her life's work, more of a family encyclopedia of the family history than a book of treasured pics.
Each picture has a paragraph or two explaining what was going on with the pic, how those pictured related to us all and why most were taken from tin type exposures.
I now know why she is so damn broke half the time. I have thirty seven cousins still alive and she has made one of these BIG books for each of them and her remaining five   (nope, sorry, she is one of the five still living)   four siblings.

This book goes back to 1807 when our immigrant German family first made it to Mississippi Territory from somewhere in the Carolinas where the ship landed from Germany. They stayed there for two generations before heading to Texas following the call of free land. Just call it yours, protect it, build a home and farm something - and you can call it yours. Texas was wide open and free to take at that time. Protecting your home from the wild was the hard part.
This was before the Civil War when large portions of the political parts of Texas governance became crosswise with the Union.

Most all of Texans were glad to restore the Union and become Americans again. We will still fly our State Flag, though.

Even in Indiana I fly the Lone Star at certain times. I've been here over thirty years, but y'all cain't take the Texas out of this boy.
I always fly the flag for a few days around March 2nd, the day we won our Independence from Mexico and became a Republic, and December 29th, the day we were recognized in full faith as a bonafide state and a full member of the United States Of America.
I like to celebrate the end of a war, not the beginning, as in July 4th, which I celebrate, but differently.

I have noticed that most of the world celebrate the END of a war, instead of the beginning of a war as Americans seem to do. December 7th for instance.

Anyway, this huge encyclopedia of our family history will be forever treasured by me and mine. This represents a large part of her life work in the twenty five years since my father passed. I knew she was doing this, but I had no idea she was writing a book about our family.
I hope others of my kin appreciate what she has done for all of us as much as I do. I think they will in time.

I hate to sound like a kind of wimp, but this is kind of emotional for me. My mom is a fucking rock star in my book.

As far as how to distribute among others, I would say make copies and keep as many originals as you can. Then when you are old and pushing toward kicking daisies up, find some youngster in the family with an interest to give the whole thing to.

You have time to make these decisions.

I will try and do that, thanks DirtDawg. :)

I got a whole bunch of photos in a unique-looking tin (rectangular with flowers on top and an intricate pattern in red and silver around the sides) plus two albums '70s style. Some of the photos are missing and I have no doubt it was my dad's ex who took them out and did who knows what with them. The same ex who prevented me from seeing my dad for about 20 years and my twin throughout our teenage years. She is a true bitch. Anyway, I'm glad my dad gave me what he did.

Not today since the mail runs a bit later in the day, but yesterday I received some rich black Sumatran, hand picked, hand rolled tea.

Just enjoying my first cup. Very rich and strong! I'll have to adjust my recipe.
I am sort of new to Sumatran teas and I thought I was being careful with the quantity, using only three little balls of the tea in my pot. It exploded my infuser!

With the weather beginning to show some change, I have gone from iced American style red and black pekoe tea with some monarda mixed in, to hot exotics from far away lands, again.
I still have a few blends of eastern teas left from early this year, but this is the first "new" tea I have ordered this season.

I'm not sure if it's only an American thing, though it's commonly said, a honey-do list, which are generally task or errands given to a spouse or partner. As in, here's some things I'd like you to do honey.  :orly: I ordered a cord concealer kit for a cord that's been bugging me for a long time, but I wanted him to do it because I can't see straight and I would likely stick it crooked to the wall.  :dunno:

My honey do lists often tend to become "Honey, overdue" lists.

Certain things get priority status, though. Safety, plumbing or electrical, always taken care of immediately.
We had a dishwasher leaking and some paint had peeled in a spot. THAT was moved to the top of the list once the appliance was replaced.
Could not allow peeling paint in our new home!

Just a couple of hours after I posted about how I prioritize plumbing, my neighbor rang the doorbell. FFS!! WTF!!??!!
OK, she wanted inform us that our side outdoor faucet is just running and flooding everything.

So, she was doing us a favor.
Coincidentally, about a week ago she was complaining about our sprinkler system going too much and making the place between our houses too wet. I told her that since the rains started up last month I have turned the sprinkler system off. It's not running. But she was right. There was swamp between our houses. I passed it off as a damn lot of rain, which we have had.

Turns out today it is one of those safety check valves that screwed up last spring on the other side of the house. Fortunately, last spring I bought a spare when I fixed the other one. Those things are $38 a pop, so keeping a spare is no small endeavor.

Now I have both current and ready for twenty more years of service.
I hope. Jacking with those things is a major pain! For one thing they are designed to never be removed. There is a set screw that is tightened, tightly that is made to break off if you try to take it off. This actually makes repairs more difficult. But, I got it done.

I suppose I had some neggie kharma coming after talking like I did before about my honey do list priorities.

Eufy. It's an inexpensive one. When I first went shopping for a robovac, I was hesitant to make a huge investment not knowing how it would work out in our home or with the dog. I chose it not only based on price, but also because the negative reviews all seemed to be from people who had already owned a smarter vacuum. It doesn't have mapping or other fancy features, so it roams around seemingly randomly yet still manages to get everywhere do a good job.  :dunno: The previous one lasted three years without ever losing battery life, and it likely would have lasted longer if it weren't for the fact I damaged the lens. Anyway, we run it everyday so I felt it had more than earned its keep and opted to buy another exactly like it.

Finally, this book!

Amazon offers this big book for $80, but I bought a used copy from these guys:

https://www.betterworldbooks.com/product/detail/the-biographical-encyclopedia-of-jazz-9780195074185
They mostly ship out of Mishawaka, IN.

This is my third order from this site and no problems at all, except maybe a little slow. Amazon has spoiled some of us.

I ordered some shelf brackets from Amazon last week in the morning and they arrived that same afternoon.  FFS!
Amazon's distribution center is out by the Indy airport, sixty five miles away.
Lowe's is five miles away, across town and it takes three days to get a pallet of mulch delivered from their floor stock!

She's not upgrading, she's setting up another computer in her room so she can start writing a story that's been in her head for a couple of years. With her computer in the lounge room, there are too many distractions and she won't get anything done. Me and a friend of hers have been the ones to encourage her to set up her writing computer. ^I got a replacement phone in the mail the other day, too. I bought a Pixel Pro in November that developed a scratched screen suspiciously quickly, so I asked Google and they agreed to replace it. Whatever else is said about them, I think their customer support is first-rate.

The needles for my estradiol.  Only the needles.  They didn't come with syringes.  Oh.  Okay.  Ordered an equivalent number of syringes without needles, and they will arrive tomorrow.  Used up my last two patches, was not able to buy more and won't be soon, so I've had no bridge between running out of the needles the first pharmacy gave me and beginning to use them regularly.  I've missed one full dose of my new prescription and I'm going to be two days late on another.  But I scheduled it to arrive in the morning, let's see if they actually hold themselves to that

I received a shipment of SACDs I ordered from Japan yesterday. Took three weeks to get here.
Good place to shop for hi-res recordings "cdjapan.co"

Prices are killer, but the shipping is murder!  I actually ordered nine CDs to help offset the shipping costs.

Got a letter from Synergy (electricity supplier) saying that the meter will be replaced by a digital one and they'll be able to take readings remotely. I'm wondering if all the meter readers will be out of jobs?

Apparently they have to cut the electricity for half an hour while they install the new meter. I'm hoping they don't do it while it's hot outside.

SACD should play in many DVD, most Blu-ray or 4K players. But to decode all the layers with surround, etc. properly for each format, you really need a player designed to meet the SACD specification set.

I have an older Pioneer Elite Blu-ray player that has the SACD logo on the front panel along with about twelve other decoders built in. Also an even older Sony DVD I use in the garage will play all but the highest resolution two channel layers on every SACD I've tried on it.

That's a compromise, but while some SACDs include Redbook layers, the "better" two channel layers on most SACDs are still higher res than anything that is possible on a typical Redbook CD.

Most folks can hear differences for themselves between CD and SACD, but the more telling point becomes more about whether anyone really cares about finer playback quality these days.  Our numbers are dwindling.

With hardware media constantly dropping in sales across the board, I fear that the doom of SACD and possibly a few other formats may be closer than we know.

It arrived Monday, not today, but I ordered an extra EU-to-US power adapter in case I lose the one I'm using now.  No idea what I'll do with either of them once I replace this laptop, but I don't anticipate having enough money to do that any way for quite some time

I have but a few SACDs in my collection. My 4k player doesn't accept them. My external Blu-ray (for my work setup) might. but I have not tested lately. It's conceivable. Even likely.

I'm doing Hi Res audio from Qobuz, which in theory will give me what I want. In theory. But then, SACD was as prone to marketing as everything else.

^You're really nice to your momma, sounds as if you get along.

I've been expecting a letter about the inspection we had, usually it lists one or two things that need doing around the house. We had a lot of cobwebs that I didn't bother doing anything about so if the letter includes that I won't be surprised.

We got some fancy Chinese restaurant pamphlets that made me hungry for Chinese food.

The letter about the results of our inspection. We don't have to do anything except wait for someone to contact us about cleaning the gutters. It was done not long ago but there's big trees out the front that shed a lot of leaves.

A Liberals pamphlet hating on Labor for putting up wind farms and planning on more.
