It can sometimes be painful, but certainly not contagious. Although it is a chronic problem for the next two years. ;)
A stipend is money I receive for being in a PhD program. But in order to receive it, I'm not allowed to work. Something about it's the school's right to own me if I'm paid for or something. :lol: Gross I get over $1800, but I lose about $250 of that per month in taxes, so what I live on is closer to $1550.

Is it just me, or is his surname rather fitting?
He sounds like a total Plank. I can't speak from personal experience, though. I've never bothered with him on facebook, and I've only seen him twice on the wp IRC channel, both times saying hello then idling all day. I am saying that people around my generation are the first group to have lots of people diagnosed with AS whilst still pretty young - I was diagnosed aged 4 for example.

Grandin does not exactly help the cause - at least from what I have seen. Like Plank, Ne'eman et al, she fails to present a coherent explanation of what ASD's are, instead choosing to promote her own myraid of misaligned examples, which just confuse the masses and sometimes even ourselves. We need a clear and carefully considered message, which none of those who claim to represent us seem able to present.

Fuck, i'm not even that worried about it, untill I see Alex exploiting others on the spectrum. The world isn't gonna change for us, i'm afraid. Its only gonna become more difficult, with all the stress of modern day life, we'd be better off looking at ourselves more.

I did name better people in another thread, but for reasons explained elsewhere, I think waiting 5 years for my generation to really mature should bring a lot better results. I would rather no-one purport to represent us at the minute, as opposed the very tokenistic representation we currently have.
And yes, I could do a better job - not that I really want the role of course, for various reasons. But in terms of wider disability rights, I have a reputation for getting things actually done and am respected for it.

He's stealing people's money. I'm sure there's a lot of people who'd do what he was doing, and better if they had it in them to con people. Its his status on facebook that got me going "i'm hungry, must be all the work i'm doing on wrongplanet.net". I remember when I was on there, like nearly a year ago, and the place would stall if there was 500 people online, he only recently got a new server. And he still has SB moderating there. He doesn't give a shit. Not all of us have Mummy's and Daddy's to buy us out of trouble. I'm sure there's others who would get shit done if they had the chance.

Temple Grandin has made the most of her life. She is successful, she has written several widely read books, and IMO she represents the spectrum well.

Ne'eman and Grandin, I settle for that, there will be others. Hadron will need a more militant person to represent him. Never has there been a big cause with only one representative. One representative would creep me out. We are so diverse.
Grandin is special anyway, with her love for cows. I laughed, reading a book of her after I had my DX. Some of the things she told about her and cows were what my parents told during the diagnostical process about me and cows in childhood. She made a job out of her obsession, I let it slip into a sweet memory. Think she did great.

The bottom line is the effect that it has on us, that really should be the ultimate measure. The work of Autism Speaks makes us a lot more likely to have a chance at getting jobs, education and fundementally being included in society. Most big causes have a small handful of effective spokespeople and actually employ people who get things done for their consituents, rather than just represent them. None of the current representatives with AS are doing anything about our real needs, nor building legitimate organisations that enable us to help ourselves.
Nor do I think we are as diverse as you are making out, especially not in terms of our needs. Fundementally, Autism itself isn't a diverse condition, its the people on the spectrum who are diverse, thus we really have a diverse set of people with a concrete cause. Unfortunately our current representatives are doing the opposite and thus setting us back in getting things done. In doing so, they are robbing many of us of the opportunities and inclusion that we deserve and are quite frankly entitled to.

No, but he is asking for donations and claiming to run an alturistic cause. I am not sure how US laws work, but over here it is likely he would be legally required to register with the Charities Commission.

Afraid he is upfront with saying otherwise. However, there might be another way to screw him, are there any US organisations who could help with this? If he was in the UK I could screw him several times over, but I don't have much expertise in dealing with the US.
