OK, this is my first post, but to hell with it.
I am finding myself increasingly sick of seeing people on WP who think they have AS primarily because they are spoiled little brats who want their own way all the time.
Every time I read a post that pisses me off...invariably I read the person's profile and it reads 'AS self diagnosed' or 'AS diagnosed' but I wonder by whom??? The local GP who just wants to get rid of them?
Anyway, it just makes me wish I could throttle them.

I don't know. I suspect that the vast majority over there are AS,
if they claim it. Doesn't mean that they're not spoiled brats too,
but when one tends to think that it's all about them, that's what
happens. There are other things that REALLY piss me off about some
people there, but mainly those who just wine about how terrible every-
thing is. Again though, I do this too, to some extent - coming up with
excuses for why I can't do what I should do. But, at least one should
try to work within their limitations. I mean, if you spend your whole
day lolling in bed, and your mother is bringing you your food, maybe
you shouldn't be whining as much as some do.
Hell, I was pretty damned content having my wife take care of me.

Mmm, I was probably being harsh, but there are a couple of people who I just want to tell to grow up.
Some of my fondest memories are of when I was sick and my Mum looked after me....didn't last long though...well, not past grade 4!
Damn it. Somebody said that eventually you have to grow up. Killjoys.

Claiming to have AS and then using your (bullshit) self-diagnosis to solicit respect and victimize yourself appears to be all the rage with certain groups of younger teenagers nowadays. By "younger teenagers", I mean people who only a few years ago claimed themselves to be "sanguine Vampyres [sic]" just to stand out from the crowd. Then they discovered AS and began claiming to have that instead of donning fangs and painting their faces white. Clearly, a mysterious diagnosis that makes you stand out from the crowd and be "different" is good as far as many younger teens are concerned. I've seen a lot of kids online who claimed to have AS while, at the same time, clearly not having it. It all seemed to boil down to them wanting to be different and to stand out from the crowd. Sad.

Yes, that's my point. I genuinely feel sorry for those who don't feel like they fit in and are victimized. But when you start putting a tag on yourself to justify your whole life experiences, no I can't buy it. Maybe I am lucky in some ways that I was diagnosed later because it made me try harder to make up for my gaps in being able to fit in.
Have discussed some of this with my psychologist and she agrees that some personality disorders are easy to present as AS. Whereas this is not a personality disorder at all.

Yes, it's all surface stuff. There's one poster in particular who just makes my blood boil...mainly because you never see them post anything intelligent...for God's sake, it's high functioning autism and they can't even make an intelligent remark...ever.
anyway, it's just one person in particular that gripes me too much...but they are young...so maybe they can grow out of their AS!! :laugh:

If someone says something that is designed to stroke my ego, and I can't judge it as fact then it just pisses me off and confuses me sometimes.

I did think she was much older than what she is because some of her posts were actually quite sensitive, caring and mature.

To be fair though, I know sometimes people mention it to their inexperienced doctor who dismisses it...not everyone has an informed health professional to assist with a proper diagnosis. I nearly didn't go through with my assessment because a counsellor pretty much dismissed it (even though he asked me about only about 3 questions, dumb ones too - like, do you care about your family).

Maybe I am lucky in some ways that I was diagnosed later because it made me try harder to make up for my gaps in being able to fit in.
Have discussed some of this with my psychologist and she agrees that some personality disorders are easy to present as AS. Whereas this is not a personality disorder at all.
I'm self dx'd and my daughter is officially dx'd. My wife is NT. I had no idea that the reason I was so "weird" or socially clueless throughout my life was AS. I just kept going and did what I could, made mistakes, learned from them and kept going forward. AS was just a revelation that answered a lot of questions about me and my past and why.

Yes, that's my point. I genuinely feel sorry for those who don't feel like they fit in and are victimized. But when you start putting a tag on yourself to justify your whole life experiences, no I can't buy it. Maybe I am lucky in some ways that I was diagnosed later because it made me try harder to make up for my gaps in being able to fit in.
Have discussed some of this with my psychologist and she agrees that some personality disorders are easy to present as AS. Whereas this is not a personality disorder at all.
I'm self dx'd and my daughter is officially dx'd. My wife is NT. I had no idea that the reason I was so "weird" or socially clueless throughout my life was AS. I just kept going and did what I could, made mistakes, learned from them and kept going forward. AS was just a revelation that answered a lot of questions about me and my past and why.

Yes, finding out was the epitome of the phrase; "Knowledge is power". It's like all the strange pieces of the puzzle finally fell into place. Instead of floundering around in the dark, I have the knowledge to figure out what needs to be done. I'm still a "work in progress", but at least I don't feel like a total outcast anymore.

My boyfriend scored high on the quiz but that doesn't mean he has it. It could be his brain damage that made him get that score. Some conditions overlap with autism/AS because they both share the same characteristics.

Claiming to have AS and then using your (bullshit) self-diagnosis to solicit respect and victimize yourself appears to be all the rage with certain groups of younger teenagers nowadays. By "younger teenagers", I mean people who only a few years ago claimed themselves to be "sanguine Vampyres [sic]" just to stand out from the crowd. Then they discovered AS and began claiming to have that instead of donning fangs and painting their faces white. Clearly, a mysterious diagnosis that makes you stand out from the crowd and be "different" is good as far as many younger teens are concerned. I've seen a lot of kids online who claimed to have AS while, at the same time, clearly not having it. It all seemed to boil down to them wanting to be different and to stand out from the crowd. Sad.

At my school there were so many "like- like girls" I call them that because every second word they say is 'like" are dumb preppy wannabes and they have buttons and clothing with slogans saying "I'm Weird and proud" and "Normal People Scare me" "I Love Geeks" but they are just silly little preps with nothing in their brain but little social butterflies.

I have no manic phase, because I am not bipolar, even my therapist said that, and its something I agreed on. Christ, I posted what AS things I used to do, and then what I do now. I can, but mom is rather obnoxious at times so if makes me feel like I don't get any. I can say this, she trying to get me to fuck someone so I can give her grandchildren. One of ours used to get lost over the winter, and find someone to take her in, until weather got better.
She did this a couple of years. I think she hated our dog, at the time, and couldn't bear being cooped up

OK, this is my first post, but to hell with it.
I am finding myself increasingly sick of seeing people on WP who think they have AS primarily because they are spoiled little brats who want their own way all the time.
Every time I read a post that pisses me off...invariably I read the person's profile and it reads 'AS self diagnosed' or 'AS diagnosed' but I wonder by whom??? The local GP who just wants to get rid of them?
Anyway, it just makes me wish I could throttle them.

I do not believe this. I know cats are predators who love a good killing game, but they are quite honest about it. They will kill anything they can through the fun of rough play. They also play with things that can kill them easily. I have seen cats time the dashing between moving cars so as to barely be missed, after waiting plenty of time to have trotted across the street, untouched. They sometimes misjudge and are maimed miserably for their game. I have also seen them taunt huge dogs which could kill them with a single bite/shake.
If they were truly liars, they would not endanger themselves, as knowingly, in their killing games.

But that is nothing more than raw predatory instinct, disrupted by human intervention. Not really the same as a lie. They really do want the food (honesty), have learned that suffering these humiliations for you can produce it (human intervention) and they really don't give a fuck about you (more honesty). Then how many times have some of us had a diagnosis...then the doctor left the practice...so you're referred to another... only to have them disagree with the first diagnosis and give you another diagnosis until they see you for a few months?
The fakers, self diagnosed, or the ones jumping on the train because they think it's the "in" thing will eventually move on or get a diagnosis. Maybe the ones that turn out NOT to be aspies will gain some insight on how to deal with relatives, friends, or family members who are before they finally stumble on the answers to their own questions.

I was only diagnosed at the insistence of my husband and MIL at the time. They kept saying "I wasn't normal" and figured I could be "fixed" with the right medication. ::)
After close to 20 years of dealing with both of them I can say without a doubt now that they aren't too damn "normal" either. :laugh:

I've never coped 'well'. Not in my book.
The kind of help I'd want is probably like a secretary in the old classic style.
Or a band's manager. Just someone to keep me doing the shit I need to.
Counselling doesn't help - I need someone to shake me by the ears and tell me what to do.
Of course, being inherently in rebellion and resisting anything that smacks of authority doesn't
help with this. I probably should have joined the military.

I tried joining the military (the army to be specific) when I was nearly 18. I failed the psych test. My mum said recently, "They certainly picked it."
I guess the lack of eye contact didn't help.
