I've been to the optometrist and she said I could get reading glasses if I wanted to but if I'm comfortable to take my glasses off to read, then I can just do that. The cost of an extra pair of glasses? No way. I shouldn't have to get reading glasses ever because I'm short-sighted. Well, in my stronger right eye anyway.

If your eyes are quite similar and have no strong cilindrical issues that might work for you, without being too tiring.

My mom had glasses at the age of four (during WWII, quite rare in those times at that age). Didn't know her otherwise than short sighted. Also when she got varifocals, bit at the lower part of her glasses was less strong than the above part of her glasses.
Now she got eye surgery. She only needs readingglasses now.  and less strong than I need.

Does taking off your glasses not take away the benefit of your Irlen glasses when reading?

My most recent trip to the Optometrist resulted in my first pair of bifocals. Same with the SO but we took to them differently. I loved mine and had no issues adjusting. He hated his and gave up trying to adjust.

Ah, I've got my first progressive lenses too now. Took some time to adjust, but am so happy with them.

A colleague of mine could not adapt either. Now she has one eyeglass for looking in the distance, and the other for close by. She adapted to that without any problems.

I went with two pairs of glasses too. I'm always tinkering/working on stuff...the back and forth with bifocals just made me more dizzy than I already am and gave me some horrible headaches. Need to get a second pair of "readers" so I can have one on the desk and one on the workbench. Wish I could get a pair over-the-counter...but my prescription is nuts.

I have progressive glasses. I remember that I wasn't very fond of my first pair, a couple of years ago, but they've gotten better lately. The current pair is great, it's my eyesight that is changing a bit too fast for comfort.

I have three pairs. :zoinks:

One for outdoor use - they're progressive so I can actually read stuff using them.
One for computer work. Hate them.
One for reading. Love them.

Oh, that colleague of mine doesn't have two pairs off glasses. One eye has a prescription glass for looking in the distance, the other eye does the reading. And apparently vague help from the other eye is enough for depth perception.

I could opt for three versions of progressive lenses. I went for the most luxurious one. The optometrist advised to either get the cheapest option or the most expensive option. He had hardly ever met someone enjoying the one in between. And those who did prefer that option we people with a big difference between their right and left eye.

Wait, I have progressives, not bifocals. I called it the wrong thing. But I love them.

Yeah, mine are progressives.

Does taking off your glasses not take away the benefit of your Irlen glasses when reading?
My need for Irlen lenses is not really for reading, so I told the optometrist when she asked. Good question. It's the environment at shopping centres, whilst driving and when under fluorescent light that has me getting headaches and eye strain in no time flat.

I also keep my glasses on when using my computer but even then I can tell that I need a new monitor. It gives off a yellow glow despite tweaking the settings.

I spent time at the terminal using my terminal glasses today. I still hate them.

I have one plastic lens due to a very bad cataract fix. And the other eye had a detached retina earlier this year. But I still rarely wear glasses, only a pair of non-prescription reading glasses for reading and computer stuff.

The left eye is still improving after the operation, I got very lucky.

Detached retina is one of my major fears concerning my eyes. That would be bloody scary.
