I did a very strange AS Thing at work yesterday. I was putting together a display to set out in the middle of the walkway, which will be loaded with various configurations of computer memory. The promotional angle is that they will donate a tiny percent of the profits from this display to Alzheimer's research. I did not understand that, at first.

So here I am putting this thing together from boxes of "little pieces parts" and I pull out the signs and it all says "Alzheimer's" on it. I said that I thought it was really weird that a supposedly popular company that makes computer memory would call their new stuff Alzheimer's. Why the fuck would anyone want to buy memory with Alzheimer's, etc. etc. ...

It all had to be explained to me in detail, before I got it. I felt a little stupid.

Jimi Hendrix: When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace.

Ghandi: Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.

The end result of life's daily pain and suffering, trials and failures, tears and laughter, readings and listenings is an accumulation of wisdom in its purest form.

I know. Heres an analogy for you...
“Arithmetic is to mathematics as spelling is to writing.”

That analogy is flawed.

These are more accurate.

"Numbers is to mathematics as letters is to language."

"Arithmetic is to mathematics as words are to sentences."

Arithmetic is doing sums. It requires no maths skill as such. What maths is about is the problem solving skills.

Not all mathematics is concerned with numbers.

Quote
"Arithmetic is to mathematics as words are to sentences."

And again.

Not all mathematics is concerned with numbers.

It's not?

No. Geometry is the easiest example,
actually. Sure, you can express it numerically,
but that's not necessary. Formal logics are
also a branch of mathematics, and they don't
deal in numbers (unless you want to consider
True and False numbers - but that's just a matter
of convention).

All mathematics deals with numbers. When you get to the core of it. Even geometry.

Everything deals with numbers,
if you want to take it to that extreme.
Letters are merely symbols, which can
be counted. One can formalize anything
as a numeric system, so math is no different
from anything else.

Kinda like the prison joke, where all jokes
are assigned numbers.

Depends on what you count as a number, I suppose. As far as what someone would commonly term a number, Complex analysis and cardinality can be mainly left out, its too abstract really. To a common outsider i doubt you could go further than Rationals, tbh.
