Yeah for bandwidth concerns, but it still is not guaranteed so packets can be and do get lost. 

Right, but you also don't really mind missing a few packets.
Plus, UDP is so inherently unfair, that as long as it's only
a small part of the overall traffic, you can steal bandwidth
from silly TCP users. 

I know why it works.  Just after that you need QoS (Quality of Service) and is different on the router side.   Not really a good thing either bandwith wise.  Especially not for security.   Great for VoIP if you aren't a target of spyware and such even with QoS.
