Also returned a jacket a friend lent the Princess Royal and gave her a TShirt I really didn't like.  She in turn gifted me with 2 pounds of baby carrots.

It wasn't bartering.  It was more like, "Can you take this off my hands?"  We do this a bit since it's only her and her daughter here and we're 3 in my family.  Sometimes I'll send over leftovers (I know, I know).

Yeah, they should be allowed to decide for themselves. Of course, sometimes you have to encourage them, considering that the required gear will often cost a ton of money and they shouldn't give up too easily, but there's no point in forcing them to do something they don't want to do.

Had a fun lunchtime watching an excavator pick up really heavy junk and pile it into a tip truck (I was in my car eating lunch like I sometimes do). The truck almost got tipped over :P
