Depends on your definition but Finnish, Swedish, and English well enough to fool most people, enough German to fool a deaf Russian, some Spanish, and some Middle Egyptian (my pronunciation is probably horrible). Also, I speak some Danish and Norwegian but have no problem understanding what they say because Swedish is similar to them both. Oh, and I understand some Estonian because I speak Finnish (Hungarian's more difficult, though).

So anywhere between 3 and 8. :P

My Dad used to work as an interpreter and was very gifted. I suppose I have some of his language genes.

I picked up Spanish and Middle Egyptian in later years and the others while in my teens. Er, except for Finnish since I was born in Finland.

I'm thinking about learning Russian, too, and maybe Portuguese. There are some good, free FSI courses available.

It was a question of opportunity and interest. We moved to Sweden when I was 11 and I had to learn Swedish by immersion. English came after--I focussed on one language at a time. Also, I wasn't interested at first *because* my father worked as an interpreter. :laugh:

I think in images or in the language I'm using at the moment. If I'm translating, I normally think in the target language. I tend to default to the language I used last, otherwise.

(I have a couple of BIOS issues to resolve, trying to revive an old box, but I am semi-confounded. I know it is something simple and in clear view, but I am blind to it. More experience is needed. The old buddy if mine who I have counted on for years has had a severe heart attack and may die, soon. I found out when I tried to call him, last night. He has not been conscious in over three days, now. A story for another time, though.)
