Alright brother

Have you seen Koyaanisqatsi?

Oh yes. And the two films following it, and I met the guy who made them. Why?

No reason I was just discussing it with someone else. Just though you might have seen it being Mr. Celluloid.

Haven't seen the last one, the CGI one, any good?

Not as good as the first two, but interesting. Me, I prefer Powaqqatsi.

I've got a machine set up so I can learn Linux.

I wanted to do this last summer when I had more time, but I needed a processor and I had very little money. It's going now though, as of today. I want to install a free version of Linux and go from there. First of all = Which version do you recommend for a greenhorn to install on a dedicated machine.

Can you give me a vague list of apps that I should look for:

Anti-virus
Music playback
Bit torrent
Photo editing
Disk (CD) burning
PDF viewing

... as a starting point.

No real hurry. I can't get back to this, until the weekend.

*butts in*

Install PCLinuxOS. All the apps you just requested are there and it comes with most of the shit you could need already installed. It comes as a Live CD you can install to your HD when you're ready, and its a piece of piss for the uniinitiated to get to grips with.

BTW viruses - not really a problem lol, but ClamAV is pretty good.

Browse through this list of Linux equivalents to get a general idea of which applications to use.

PCLinuxOS seems to be pretty good. Other prefer Ubuntu or some of its variants. I have Debian but that's usually not a recommended distro for newbies.

Thanks fellas! I had not seen that index page. Awesome!

I had ordered the PCLinusOS Live CD, but it hit the mailbox about the time my mom visited and I'll be fucked if I know what happened to it.

(doesn't sound good, so far, does it?)

I'm doing this, whether I'm ready or not.

Dunc's right, though. Try a live distro and ease into it. No reason to do it all at once.

I've been running Linux as my main OS for years now and would hate to go back. I always miss the neat shortcuts and tricks, and a good shell.

Hell yeah. When you've used KDE for a while, the XP interface seems so clunky and inflexible. And all Vista does it make slightly closer in terms of usability to KDE and OS X. There's no going back.  8)

Its fun, 156 mg of ginsenosides, panax ginseng.  It helps you to deal with stress, but what happens to a mind that is already calmn? >:D >:D

Still haven't installed Vista anywhere. Didn't see it in the Free Software Foundation's listings...

Are you far enough North to see the Northern lights?

I'm far enough north to get a glimpse, sometimes. However, I was born in a town where the northern lights were (and are, I think) a fairly common occurrence. The town is another 1,500 kilometres closer to the north pole. :)
