Three Amigos

:zombiefuck:  You have a dopey comedy here but you left out Das Boot??   :scratchhead:

Das Boot was produced as a TV series and then cut down to a movie, I believe. Then the movie was expanded to include more of the TV series. I agree that it is brilliant, but it's hard to count it as a movie made for cinemas, which my list is about.

What?? I've never seen nor heard of a Das Boot TV series. Do you have links to it??

EDIT: nevermind, I found it. You got it backwards, the movie was released first, then the BBC series in the mid 80's came out a few years later.

My bad. Consider it included.

No, I haven't. Spirited Away I only saw because I screened it dozens of times at the cinema and finally ended up watching it. Normally I wouldn't go anywhere near anime because I don't like the style. I'm more of a Disney person, stylistically, although I have to admit that Spirited Away is a work of art.

You should watch Akira. Not only good animation but an absolute mindfuck of a plot. It's developed a huge cult following.

Will do. I think my son's got it on DVD.

As far as dopey comedies go, my vote would be for The Great Race. It has the most epic pie fight in all of cinema history!!

Das Boot  :2thumbsup:

I enjoyed the German language one with subtitles more than the English version.

 It's a good one, but Three Amigos has a special place in my heart. :P

I'd also suggest Fletch Lives, a B comedy if there ever was one, but it makes me giggle every time.

Come to think of it, we should have a thread for the B flicks. Films you like but that will never make any official list.

And films that should have been on such a list, like 1941. A for effort, but that's really it.

I saw this vid on changing the bulb in an IMAX projector and thought of you, have you ever worked with an IMAX or any other projector big enough to require a water cooled bulb?

I've worked with projectors that have the option but none that actually had Xenon bulb water cooling installed. IMAX is a special case since the frame size is huge in comparison with other formats.

Most projectors I have worked with have water cooling for the film gate, but that's very different. Still interesting if the water cooling clogs up, though

At one point you had mentioned a version of Linux that could be run from a thumb drive what was it and is it that difficult?  I am thinking about trying it on my spare laptop if its not that difficult.

You can run many Linux distros from thumb drives. I'd recommend Ubuntu or Mint. If you need a more Windows-like user interface, Mint is probably what you want, but both are good bets.

Follow the instructions given here. You also need to download the ISO image for either Ubuntu or Mint.

You'll need a 2GB or larger drive.

Both allow you to install the OS once you're done testing.

Ever have any luck video recording a 16mm movie? I'm getting mixed results mostly  flicker issues which I would understand more if it was constant but it comes and goes.

It comes and goes because the projector's speed varies--most projector motors vary in speed slightly over time and, depending on the type of motor, the variation will become more noticeable when the motor gets warm. This thread explains some of the usual methods.

The bottom line, unfortunately, is that it's very hard to get rid of flicker completely without professional equipment.

I can highly recommend Mint.

You'll need to faff about a little bit if you have a decent graphics card though, that goes for most distros. Mint is pretty stable and well put together.
