As was my grandmother's hand. It stood perpendicularly on her wrist. Her wrist stood in an angle to her arm too. The effect was a hook.
(She had been stung by a wasp when she was only a few days old. Her whole arm grew twisted as a result. Surgery later in life made things a lot better. She ended with "just" the hooked hand/wrist. She became a teacher in textile crafts with that hand. As a five year old, I think I was the last pupil she taught how to knit.)
