I lurked a long time at wrongplanet and before that aspergia. I'm 22, male, spent most of my life in a cult, don't really speak in real life unless given clear direction.
This is my first time at intensity but I've known about it for over a year. I must say this site has been quite disappointing so far, but maybe I'm still a little lost having just arrived a day ago. I didn't have great expectations going in but if I may be so bold as to ask where's my best chance at finding any discussion of substance? I try to never assume but I always have suspicions that people who openly make the most of their free speech on the internet tend to be the most socialized (with exception of course).
Mainly I'm dropping by here because I have ideas that are taboo in most places. I'm always searching for some social world I can make sense of.

Welcome aboard... it shouldn't take long to find out whether you're going to find what you're looking for here. I dunno about socialised exactly, but we're definitely gobby, and mostly able to carry on a conversation online (although many of us can't work, have a variety of issues, and I doubt most of us have more friends IRL than we can count on one hand (I have one. I last saw him about two years ago, I think, meh.)

So basically, this place is a free for all. An analogy we like to use is that its a cyber pub for auties - you get the banter, bad language, people being matey, inebriated and/or belligerent, which occasionally breaks out into open warfare. And then there are corners here and there where people who want to have proper gloves-off debates can and do. As a newbie you can't see all the forums yet - all will be revealed when you've made ten posts.

Your best chance at finding discussion of substance is to find specific people who you think are capable of that.  It isn't likely you will find a forum anywhere with people all capable of that.  The people most capable of having those kinds of dicussion are probably not browsing the internet very heavily so you gotta settle for a balance.

People are fairly socialized here, but if you don't mind getting into a few fights when the more socialized ones object, you'll probably find that there are others who will back you up. Some who would back you up just for saying you think independently and some who will call you full of shit no matter what argument you come up with. It does depend on social skills, but then, doesn't most of the world?
