I think you're thinking of Pickwicks on one of those side streets down the side of the Grove library - Tumblers was round the back of the college on Tumbling Hill St - it had a pub type bit downstairs with a club night upstairs that opened once the bar had filled up a bit. Good music, loads of underage kids (like me and Mel) and neanderthal bouncers. Didn't know The Mannville had been Sutcliffe's pub of choice, it was a ropey Tetley's boozer with a piss artist landlord, cheap beer and a decent jukebox, and a mix of students and decrepit locals when I was there.... then it got flogged and turned into a fucking Scruffy Murphys 'Oirish' bar. Rios was a dive but had some good punk and metal bands on. The Cellar Bar under Queens Hall had a fair few smaller gigs on too and cheap beer being the college union bar.

Champagnes was the bar in the cellar of a Victorian house opposite the college.  I found an old flyer for it in an old wallet.  This must be from 1990:

Also, remember Tumblers.  It was a building standing by itself because all the other houses around it had been demolished.  It was like in the middle of a bombsite half way down the hill.

And an honourable mention goes out to McRory's.  Used to fancy a barmaid in there like crazy, and they used to have a jam session once a week.  A mate of a mate dropped two purple oms into my pint in there once on my birthday.  And I didn't notice until my beer glass started talking to me.  Those were strange days.  Oh to be young again.

Also, just found my "Pickwicks" membership card from 1991.

McRorys, was that up on Easby Road? Never went to Champagnes but the music list sounds right up my street. I remember seeing NMA at Queens Hall back in 91 - fucking awesome. Yeah Tumblers was out in no mans land where the local scrotes hung around waiting for unsuspecting students to mug - I was a regular in the early 90s and first started seeing Mel there after rescuing her from a sweaty midget wearing three long sleeve t-shirts. By the time I was old enough to drink legally it wasn't the same.  :lol1:

The neighbourhood actually went further downhill after you left as the locals chased the red light district out of Lumb Lane post 'Band of Gold' and down onto Sunbridge Road, Thornton Road and up Longside Lane behind the uni, enter the 'Crossbow Cannibal'.

I remember The Bell up Lumb Lane.  A couple of girls I know paid their way through Engineering degrees by stripping in there.  Reasonably priced drinks, only half a dollar on the door and open Sundays?  I think it got turned into an Islamic Education Centre - which is kind of poetic.  I went back to work in Bradford about 5 years after Uni and it had gone - as had the red light district.

McRorys was the street before the Manville Arms Hotel - which could be Easby Road.  My memory is a bit soft.

My favourite spring chicken lives in the USA. Genetically the origins from SG come from all over the world IIRC. Maybe there is some Brit blood too.
