Trying to find ways of fixing the mp3 player... see what's causing the fading in and out with my headphones... only because I tried three different wires, then I tried the wires on another device, no problems on the other devices.

You might try cleaning the headphone plugs with a chemical. They may look clean, but often, due to electrolysis caused from dissimilar metals in contact, they can or have developed microscopic build ups of oxidation which can hinder connection.

De-Oxit is great, but pricey. Ammonia usually works fine on gold or silver. Vinegar can be an option, but it depends on the build up.
If yours are rhodium, chromium or nickel plated (silver looking shiny) use an abrasive like a worn out Scotchbrite pad, gently or just your fingers with some baking soda on them and try that.

Even my expensive gold plated Sennheiser and Beyer Dynamic often suffer from a build up that is easily wiped off with De-Oxit or ammonia compounds. Obviously my gold contacts can not oxidize, but the silver ones can. The gold contacts can still hold on to various other metal oxides from the electrolysis process which can not be stopped.

It might just be how your phone plug on your headphones interacts with your other devices.

Lots to try before giving up!

Oh, about the devices; the same thing happens inside them. You might try a broken off toothpick or match or Q-tip stem with some ammonia or vinegar on it, depending upon the metals inside.
Doesn't take much, just some friction with a complimentary chemical to cause the oxidiation products to let loose, leaving a surface that will mate with your plug ins.

^Hear, hear!

I have studio-quality AKGs that require regular cleaning. I own an old Roland synthesizer that requires a proper cleaning every year or two. The key switches keep oxidising. I love that synth, though.

Nothing is immune.

I understand from previous conversations that your early studies were in the area of physics, maybe?

If so, then you know you can not have two dissimilar metals touch without some interaction occuring. Attempting to pass even a micro level current between them speeds up this unending process.

De-Oxit rules!

I spent years studying physics and astronomy, as a matter of fact. Solid state physics was never my strongest subject, but yes, things will happen. On the surface of it, it's more chemistry IIRC, but there's also quite a bit of quantum physics in there if you look very closely.

This was round 35 years ago, mind, and things have changed since. I do remember how fascinated I was, but some of the details are gone and now I'm just someone with a keen interest in the subject.

Essentially, though, ionisation is very much quantum physics.

Doing what I've been doing the past week(s) or so... checking to see if the background check cleared, and when I eventually start work.

I'll be going to my client's place. Last time I saw him, he said that he'd like some lamps to put around his house rather than use the overhead lights. So I found two lamps at the Salvos. One is very colourful and looks African and the other is white with an unusual wired base. Hopefully he will like them.

I'm thinking about starting to clean the floor grout tomorrow, so I can have it done before the weekend and then have the weekend to work outside. It's just getting dark too early, plus there's a storm coming, so I'm not making the progress I wanted this week.  :dunno:

I'd love a day on my own. It's very rare that I get one.

Hopefully find out where the hole in the floor pan is in this Cadillac I'm stuck with. Had to drive to boy's house in the rain today and it's taking on water like the fucking titanic.
