Tomorrow I'm going to do a whole lot of nothing before my big cooking day on Sunday.

Teach the kids (more about) how to drive.

Saturday and Sunday I will spend a few hours helping to sell gumbo, jambalaya and crawfish pies at the parish school/church fair.  PA went Thursday and helped cut up chicken, sausage, etc. While none of us are Catholic, the parish lets the special school the PR attended use their parking lot for the bus pick-up drop-off.

It's a little way of saying "Thank you."

Still plan to work in my garden.

I have a few more areas to harvest for the last time, a couple of areas to clean up a bit and set for later harvest and several to clean up and set to bed for the winter.

This year is a good year, though. I have a great deal of compost and even some (store bought bags of) manure to spread on the areas I can put down for the winter.
This week I am expecting a delivery of black peat. This is not the same as what you can buy in a bag from a store called Sphagnum Peat Moss. This is deep dug ancient mire product, mixed with ground evergreen bark and leaves.

We have very alkaline soil here  (everywhere you turn there is a limestone quarry), so this will lower the soil PH some AND add some needed micro-nutriments.

I am ready to dig a bunch and get sore muscles again!

Peat has become such a rare commodity here that it cannot be sold and bought any more.
So, my soil will remain alkaline for a few centuries longer. Shells of the sea still showing when I dig the soil.
I try to work with the tight packed alkaline soil. Being raised on quite acidic very loose sand, that is a kind of a challenge.

Good luck.
Here the soil is alkaline clay, Extremely fertile, but not worth much if left untilled. Adding copious amounts of organic matter to the top two feet is one great solution for bringing the PH closer to neutral, however the composting products only last a couple of years. It is a constant chore to replenish and maintain the tilth of the soil.

I grew up along the Rio Grande river delta/valley/flood plain area. Very fertile, but alkaline as well. People often make fun of that river's name, because it is not really so Grande these days, but there is a very real geological reason that there is about one hundred miles of laser-flat land on each side of it. It is the ancient river bed and it is VERY FERTILE, SUPER-FINE GRAINED SILT, washed downstream from the continental divide.

Again, it just needs organic matter added to make the soil near perfect.

It takes some effort, but you should have similar results adding organic matter to Your soil, regardless of the shells.

The "so called" peat I mentioned is a waste product, in the way of a future quarry. They used to just dump it out of the way somewhere, but they now have become smart enough to sell it to local farmers, nurseries and landscaping companies.
They will also bring a truckload to a residence, but that means I have to be ready to deal with a dumptruck worth all at once. I am prepared!

The usual domestic routine combined with teaching and prepping for a meeting. Plus taking the oldest to group.
