Put the balled end under the seam so the cloth isn't punctured by the sharp point.  And be careful since it will literally race along the seam, removing the stitches.  Also good for taking out splinters, cutting threads, etc.

And thanks for the advices, ladies. Know there's such a device around but just not in my possession I'm afraid. Although a sharp little knife works, a tornmesje might be handy for me, I reckon.. Next time I visit a HEMA I'll have a look for the little sucker.
