Students who don't read the textbooks are particularly good at mangling concepts.

So for example a hallmark of a true experiment is manipulation of the treatment or independent variable (IV). The experimenter changes something about the treatment (or introduces one) to see if there is a change in the target behavior (the dependent variable or DV). Simple, yes?

So a student asks can his team do their experiment without manipulating the independent variable which actually is not a stupid question since the curriculum designers left out good explanations of what happens when you can't manipulate the IV. It means you no longer have an experiment (this applies only in the case of a single non-manipulated variable). Instead, you have a choice of observation strategies which are legitimate means of conducting research.

So along comes a student who says that you don't have to manipulate the IV in a research study depending on the type of experiment. Sigh.
This is followed by another student who posts that "you may not be physically manipulating anything" but that the differences in things like gender and age count as manipulation. This is because (according to her) manipulation can be naturally occurring.

So glad the OP knew better than to listen to these [rude word deleted].

Think.  Write.  Think.  Delete.

I've done that too.  Sometimes it saves a lot of regrets later on.  8)

As far as invasive flora goes round here, christ, the amount of himalayan balsam that grows is insane. I spent quite a while last year whacking down balsam that had started to sprout in and around some of the stands of grass I harvest ergot fungus from.

And its infested a favourite local woodland too, to the extent they hold days for people to go and crack down on it.

Not wrong on the giant hogweed hyke, it really is a nasty bugger if you come into contact with it, burned me once, on my leg, left a black  blister about the diameter of a five pence coin that took ages to heal. Didn't really hurt though. Makes  me wonder how deep it went.

Its  invasive as all hell too, takes years of herbicide intensive treatment to purge it from an area utterly. I've even seen it sprouting up in roadside grass verges. Cut a  big plant down last year here because it decided to grow right outside a primary school.

Every fourth car on the road these days seems to be a white SUV.  :dunno:

If my partner were here in Canada on a work permit, I would be able to get one for myself and also get  health insurance through the government instead of her job. But since she was born here, I am unable to get one because she can't get a work permit because she was born here.

I fell in love with Canada when I came here as an adult. I figured out that they would not take me unless I was offered a job, and I didn't want to get a job just to come here. By the time Py got the job here, my interest in living in Canada had waned somewhat, but I was still excited to come. Not so excited now. Too many people here fall on the incompetent side of mediocre on  the spectrum from competent to waste of flesh. They ignored the visa stamp that says June and now it's in their computer that they arbitrarily decided that my visa was expired as of the date of their letter. A conflict like this means a big hassle at the border.

The silver lining is now I can't go to visit my mother as I promised. The lawyer said that in general it's possible they would give me trouble getting back in but they often don't bother U.S. citizens. Not telling my mother that part.

Good thing I'm too paranoid to use a credit card.  At $1/minute to talk to a psychic, I'd quickly go broke.  :P
