Because if the couple were of the opposite sex, they could get a marriage license.

In Sweden we have something called "borgerlig vigsel"~"civil wedding" in the city hall. It existed long before gay marriage, which became legal just a few years ago.

There is actually no practical point with marriage, at least not here. Back when my grandparents married, you got things like "widow pension" and "common taxation" but not anymore.

Maybe it's just a difference of location. Here people can be married outside of a church with a justice of the peace, which many do, so no real religious connotation. Not sure what you mean by the sexist part. Seems civil partnerships could be considered quite the triumph for the gay community and to give to everyone would minimize it's poignance, or at the very least be rude, because like you say it only has a different name. If the name has no meaning, then it has no meaning.

It's "seperate but equal"

And the name is important as it differentiates between sex, something which should be private. Why should it be anyone else's business what sex me or my partner are?

The religious/sexist part was about the history of it. The term "marriage" implies religion and sexism to me

Your point is a good one. These things have an evolutionary quality to them though. Your country is far ahead of most.

It is. And I'm glad of that. I don't see why we needed to make an extra thing just for same sex couples though. It would have made much more sense to just make civil marriage available for couples of any sex, without forcing them to broadcast it to the world

yeah you have to be 2 females or 2 males for a civil partnership. there was a case recently where a strraight couple wanted to get one but werent aable to

will find the law later, got a headache and cant be arsed  :dunno:
