STATESVILLE, N.C. (WGHP) — Police in Statesville have charged an 83-year-old man who worked as a greeter at Walmart with attempting to rob his own store.

Officers responded to the garden center section of the Walmart, located at 1116 Crossroads Drive in Statesville, shortly before 7 p.m.

Police say George Plane Jr., 83, of Mooresville, was working Sunday night when he went to his car, donned a disguise and walked back inside with a gun.

Statesville Police Chief Tom Anderson says Plane put the gun to a fellow employee's head and demanded money from a cash register. Anderson says Plane fired a shot in the air after leaving with the money.

It is a way to ensure a roof over your head and daily food on a plate if you didn't manage to build up a decent pension with your job.  :orly:

A cruise seems to be cheaper than an old folks home, don't know if that is true, but it is an intriguing rumour that it is.

Hmmm   :chin:   I am not sure about this one!!
when i first read it my initial response was with pity,  i thought oh let him go he is 83 ffs.
I think when you think about 83 year old men you get an image of 'kindly old Granpa'

then i thought it over and i thought 'hold on a minute'
 :o -
he wasn't skint/starving was he?
having a job and a car makes me think probably not

did he feel sorry for his victims?
no he put a fookin gun to their head.  even worse - it was a colleague, someone he worked with!  was he going to go to work next day and shed some croc tears and pretend to be supportive?

He even fired a shot, although not at anyone,  he was being intimidating.  Now it might turn out that he is losing his marbles,  or just lost his family in a horrific accident.  If so i think yeah go easy on him.  I also think if someone served in the armed forces, some kind of national service or are a war veteren then i  think we owe them one and it should be reflected when sentencing.

Just on the info in the article it looks to me like a very nasty premeditated crime by a nasty little man.  Its traumatic having a gun at your head.  Imagine thinking you are going to be shot any minute.

unless any other factors come to light i wouldn't say let him off with it just cus he is an old man.

If you get any more info on this guy will you update this topic IceQueen?  It would be interesting to find out if he had a criminal record and any previous armed robberies!!!

blah blah blah

Being a Wal-Mart greeter should be a volunteer job, not something that you can get paid even one cent for.

Yes, because walmart is such a logical charitable cause to donate one's time.

Now don't begrudge broke old retirees a few more bucks. You and I might end up working as Wal-Mart greeters too.  :thumbdn:

Don't worry, I've already got the line down:

"Welcome to Wal-Mart! Get your shit and get out!" :orly:

That's the spirit! Meanwhile I will be hunched in a corner, shrunk down to 4'7" by osteoporosis,
just glaring  at the customers and shooing them past me. We'll be the worst Wal-Mart greeters ever!   :2thumbsup:
