Things you will never "get" in life

I don't get the whole fixation so many women seem to have upon getting
engaged and married  , not entirely out of love for the guy, but out of
  a.) a need for validation of themselves as women,
  b.) material greed, especially for a diamond ring that their peers will envy, and
  c.) a lifelong dream of having a "fairytale wedding" and "feeling like a princess."


I joke at work that if I ever do get married, I'll probably plan a lunchtime elopement to City Hall,
followed by a return to work for the rest of the afternoon!   

  weddings cost thousands, for just one day!!!  some people save up for years,  no i just don't get it either

I'd rather use the money to buy a house. 

I had the diamond ring and also the wedding, but just not a very expensive one.

My husband bought me the diamond ring and he was the one who very much wanted a wedding, since he had never had one before.

I would have married him anywhere if it would have been just us, but if he wanted an actual wedding, I wanted it to be in the church I grew up in.

I'm sure that it was probably the most expensive party we have ever thrown in our lives, but I think the whole affair cost less than $2000 including the wedding dress, which was a handmade copy of an old Victorian dress my aunt found in her attic and gave to my mother, who gave it to me.  The lace and buttons were still intact, but the cloth was rotten and falling apart, so I bought new cloth, which cost around $200, and had a seamstress friend make it for me.  I planned to make it myself and carefully took apart the old dress to reuse the old lace and the buttons and use the rest as a pattern for the new dress, but I spazzed when it was time to cut the new cloth, which cost $10 a yard.  At that time, it was the most expensive cloth I had ever bought.

That sounds like a lovely wedding. I'm talking about the five-figures-or-more extravaganzas,
the planning of which leads to poverty and insanity for all involved!

Well, there's no guarantee about that IMO, but at least she was concerned about cleanliness.
I'm talking about women who judge the man harshly if his shoes are cheap, scuffed or unfashionable.

I agree that too many couples, especially some brides-to-be, focus entirely too much on the wedding day, which is just one day out of their lives, and not nearly enough on the marriage which will follow, which is supposed to last for the rest of their lives.

Yeah, I think some women reject men for having dorky or shabby shoes because they require a stylish man.
That's fine at some times in life, and maybe for some it remains a lifelong deal-breaker. To each her own.

That's what I don't get. For some women, it apparently is second nature to check out a man's shoes
and make a split-second judgment. Good luck, ladies, you take the hipsters and leave me the dorks!

   apart from if someone isnt wearing any (i would probably notice then)  i dont think i would judge anyone on footwear.  When i was in the army though,  if you were copped with dirty boots you would be punished and humiliated in front everyone!!

I was only a Private!   lasted 10 months  -  it was evil.   Someone shouting down your ear at 5.30am.  It was just after they first let women in the army (long time ago - i was in early twenties) and they would take over the mess room and play porno videos.  I was one of three girls in the worcestershire and sherwood forresters...anyway when i decided i had enough i had to get out of my contract so i told the  CO about the porn in the mess, and i laid on a few tears (played the blonde card hehehe) and hey presto my ass was back in civvy street.
