« on: December 22, 2010, 01:26:04 AM »
to be honest, im mostly just lolling to any scenario where i can imagine any one of you sacrificing yourself for something

nothing against you guys, im just a bit morbid that way :]

but yes

would you?

for what cause, would you throw your life to the side, and huuurl your body ahead?
parents, for kids?
others, for gfs/bfs?

I think that most people who do are either cornered, no other options left, or do it without giving it much thought before hand.
Seized by the moment, when a loved one is at risk, or something is happening that triggers unstoppable action, safety is not important anymore. And, in hindsight, people will say someone sacrificed him/her self.

There are lots of things I would sacrifice myself for. I would for people I loved, causes I believe in, etc.

I hate to get all serious, but I think that is what we all are looking for in life - something worth dying for.

To quote QOTSA :

Yes. Lots of things like this happen in the heat of the moment and you won't even get a chance to think about what you are doing

About 10 years ago I was walking down the street and all of a sudden this 5 year old kid came sliding down into the street, headed for traffic ( it was icy ) . I didn't even think about what I was doing - it was like a reaction. I immediatly ran into the street and grabbed him up and took him to safety. We both almost got killed. His eyes were like saucers. I said, " are you ok ?" He shook his head yes. Then I said, " do you know how to get home ?" He shook his head yes. I said. "Ok, well, be carefull," and then he ran away. I never saw him again but I will never ever forget that. I actually ran into traffic to save some kid I never even saw before - and I didnt even have to think about it.

Id like to think that most people would do the same.

hm. good points.

i didnt even think of that.

when one have to act too quickly to think, then the chances of "sacrifice" increase drastically

good points!

I know I would for someone I loved.  I probably would for a child.

Hyke and Eris are right that it happens in a flash and you have no time to think about it, though.  Your unconcious mind takes over and it's done in a flash.

I nearly had a car accident once swerving and braking at the same time to avoid hitting a cat.  My car fishtailed all over the road and it's only because the oncoming cars saw what was happening and pulled over to the side of the road that my fishtailing car didn't hit them.  All I knew at the instant is that I couldn't bear to hit the cat.  My mother was upset when I told her about the near accident and said I should have hit the cat rather than risk an accident.

Consciously, I agree with her.  If the same situation happens again, I plan to only brake or swerve to avoid hitting an animal, not both at the same time.  Consciously, I wouldn't want to sacrifice a person's life to save a cat.

actually, this reminds me of one day me, my dad, my brother and sister were out on a stroll

me and my brother were probably some 18 and 16 respectively, and my sister sat in a carrier thingie w wheels, those little... you know what i mean

since we're in norway, theres woods all around us, especially in the city outskirts, and we're on this wide paved path
now some of you may be city slickers, so heres a quick lection: bears dont wander near cities, not even a little bit near. theyre huge. theyll kill a lion. the romans tested that out in the colosseum.

so, we get up this path, and my peruvian dad suddenly goes "Guys! If a bear attacks us, i want you two to fight the bear, while i run back home with your sister!"
we burst out laughing, genuinely believing him to just come up w a hilarious spontaneous joke
he wasnt joking
we actually went "whaaaaaat... are you serious :/"

yes.
he wanted his two beloved sons, the hope for the future, his offspring, to give their lives - collectively - so HE could run to safety.
i dare to bet that both me and my brother run faster than him, if it comes down to saving our sister quickly.

i will always have that "idea" against him. always :D

I can't believe your dad was actually serious, because I think most parents would put themselves between a bear and their children.

Actually, you shouldn't try to run from a bear, though.  You should pick up small children, make noise, speak in a low calm voice, and stand tall to make yourself look as big as possible and slowly back away while watching the bear.

Bears actually sometimes wander down the mountains to here, but people here are more likely to see them if they go up into the mountains.

he can be so clueless sometimes

at a zoo in spain, he saw this one odd furry critter behind a fence, like a little beaver or something, and it says "from peru"
hes from peru, so he ran over, waved his hand down behind the fence, and went "compadreeee!"
i pointed to a sign right next to "peru" showing a schematic of a hand, being bitten in half by a jagged jaw....

Your dad reminds me of a guy I saw on TV, on a show called Fatal Attractions,  about people who have dangerous "pets."
This guy is a retired rancher with a "pet" bison. Bison are massive and even this proud pwner admits they can be scary.
You should have seen him in the pen with his "pet," pushing him backward by one of his horns and scolding him.  :facepalm2:
