I have a question. Is it gay to hold a door open for a guy?

Obviously, if they're right behind you, holding the door open is the most sensible thing.
But what if they're ten yards behind? Or fifteen?

Meh, worst case scenario is you end up standing there like a tit. I wouldn't usually bother unless they're reasonably close, regardless of gender (though would wait for old gimmers and folk with pushchairs obviously)

I think it is just courtesy to hold the door for someone, especially if they are fairly close to the door or if they are holding a package or seem to need extra help for some reason.  Did someone say it was gay?

It might be genuine curiosity, or that combined with a little fear of coming off as gay.  I would used to be afraid that I might appear as gay by doing something, not because i cared about my image, but because i didnt want to offend other guys who are probably homophobes.

Absolutely not, though if you're more than ten or fifteen seconds ahead of where he is, unless he's running to catch the door, he might be confused, but probably not thinking you're hitting on him.  It's only gay if you compliment his ass as he passes.
