Anyone else here keep wish lists on Amazon?
« on: September 23, 2008, 05:35:01 PM »
I've got one.  I find it helps me sort out and prioritize which items of junk I'd really like to own, which are merely interesting, and which are just crap that would become attic fodder within ten years.  Over 300 items on the list, consisting mostly of movies, photographic gear, and some books.  I don't seriously think I'm going to be buying all that shit (not in today's economy, anyway), but it's still fun to keep a list.  (OCD-induced hobby?)  If I see something that might be useful in the future but I'm not ready for it yet, I just add it to the list so it'll be easier to find again later.

Interesting things about it... You can keep several lists, for example a main one and then several smaller ones (e.g. items needed for projects you might have in mind).  You can make some public and some private.  (The main list is public but with an alias instead of my real name.)

Anyone else here do that?

i do, but i have a hard time telling amazon to fuck off with giving me recommendations based on the wish list/things i buy, which drives me nuts!

the only way i've found to do it is to click on the little box on the item (whether i bought it or put it on my wish list) which says "don't use for recommendations" or similar, and it takes hours!   :grrr:

It's almost always cheaper to Sweden because Amazon charges half a fortune for delivery.

You make it sound like in the sixties or seventies when we used mail order, because there wasn't really anything worth having in south Texas. If you wanted something besides farm supplies, you had to order it.

These days most of the UPS trucks have onboard GPS and as long as your package is properly scanned into the system, they can tell you exactly where it is and almost exactly when it will arrive at your door.

Takes some of the fun out of ordering, now that I think of it your way.

Ghandi: Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.

The end result of life's daily pain and suffering, trials and failures, tears and laughter, readings and listenings is an accumulation of wisdom in its purest form.

It's almost always cheaper to Sweden because Amazon charges half a fortune for delivery.

oh, of course.  i forgot you don't live in a civilised country.

no postal charges for me, cos i wait until i have a few things and then go for the supersaver, free delivery option.

at the mo, i'm getting obsessed with forensics and forensic psychology, so there's a list of those.  just waiting for a book on forensic psychology for writers (amongst other things...) to plop through my letterbox.

The supersaver option is only for the UK, isn't it? :-\

I'm trying to--for some reason it happens in spite of my best efforts. Something about how my fingers hit the keys when I type, I think. I've been wondering about it. :-\

With me it's not so much the anticipation of something on its way in the mail as being able to find bargains (the new/used seller section), and also obscure and hard-to-find stuff that fits my particular niche interests (e.g. the Talking Heads and Devo movies I mentioned earlier, or some animation by David Lynch).  I allow myself a little money to splurge every now and then, so I'll probably snag an item or two from my list.  I've still got one more season of Stargate SG-1 to go and then I'll have seen the whole series.  (Wallyworld wants $40 for the season box.  Huh!  There's a seller on Amazon who'll let it go for about $22.)  Or, I could indulge my new interest in infrared photography, by getting an infrared filter that screws onto the lens of my digital camera.  (You folks will like this.  One brand of this filter calls it an "x-ray" infrared filter, because it can let a camera pick up the body heat that shines through clothing.   :eyebrows:  I'd use mine to photograph vegetation... really, honest!   :green:)
