what's a sinus infection?

i had a stuffy nose all my childhood, i actually didn't start breathing through my nose until i was in my teens or something...  it was all my plushies and possibly also my guineapig that caused it. i thought i just had a forever cold or something. i didn't realize it was an allergy.

I've tried everything.  The cure is always worse than the disease.  :(

 or :comfort:

Even the steam?

Home care can help open the sinuses and alleviate their dryness.

Promote drainage

Drink plenty of water and hydrating beverages. Hot tea is often recommended.

Inhale steam two to four times per day by leaning over a bowl of boiling hot water (not while the water is on the stove) or using a steam vaporizer with a towel over the head and bowl to prevent the escape of the steam. Inhale the steam for about 10 minutes. Taking a hot, steamy shower may also work. Mentholated preparations, such as Vicks Vapo–Rub, can be added to the water or vaporizer to aid in opening the passageways.

Thin the mucus: Expectorants are drugs that help to expel mucus from the lungs and respiratory passages. They help to thin mucous secretions, enhancing drainage from the sinuses. The most common is guaifenesin (contained in Robitussin, for example). Over–the–counter (OTC) liquid cough medications or prescription tablets can also combine decongestants and cough suppressants to reduce symptoms as well as to eliminate the need for the use of many medications. Read label ingredients to find the right combination of ingredients or ask the pharmacist for help.

Relieve pain: Pain medication such as ibuprofen (Motrin and Advil are examples), aspirin, and acetaminophen (Tylenol is in this category) can reduce pain and inflammation. These medications help to open the airways by reducing swelling.

Basically, yeah.  I clean my house every week, including vaccuuming etc., wamr mist humidifier running all the time, try to have steam as often as I can manage- maybe I should try more of that, though it's not just congestion.  Cngestion I'm ok with, it's my damn EARS that make me crazy.  Painkillers, I can only take so many.  Decongestants don't help much and screw me up wicked.  I think I'm allergic to earwax-removing drops (and my ears are what really mostly kill me).  Benadryl=sleeping pills, and I fucking hate them with a passion, OTC non-diphenhydramine antihistamines make me dizzy.  Taking care of diet, etc.  Keep asking the people at my campus health clinic to flush my damn ears and they keep sayign it's not blocked, but I'm convinced they're wrong.  Can't unblock the wax myself; I think it's so bad it needs professional treatment.  I'm seeing my doctor within a week or so for my finally shot of gardasil, so I'll talk with her then about that, ask her to just humor the hypochondriac and fucking FLUSH me, ask her about some other stuff too that's been driving me up a tree (the low BP or whatever the hell it is- prolly IS stress), skin stuff, etc.

I think I'm just allergic to the world.  I've had this ear blockage thing since I went off Zyprexa, and it does indeed work in histamine receptors.  But I'd rather have a constant low level of misery than a constant low level of everthing.  Zyprexa is the #1 med I'd never want to take again, and diphenhydramine (benadryl) is up there in the top ten, too.  (I'm kinda impossble, lol.)

I hear OK (I think) but I feel congested all the time- like my ear needs to pop, but won't.  Sometimes it hurts, sometimes it doesn't; it fluxuates.  I think I have wax (not to be graphic) because there have been a few times that I've gone insane and gone in there with a q tip because I needed RELIEF and the home flushing kit was doing diddlysquat- and it looked like there was wax on the q-tip.  So, I'm not totally crazy in my conviction that I'm prolly plugged with wax, lol.

And yeah- last time I got my ear flushed (and the doc only did one, and it was the ear that is now FINE and the one she didn't is bugging me- thugh that was seven months ago or so) it was like I had superhearing or something for awhile after, lol.

is he a T-Rex? :zoinks:

i have narrow ear tunnels so i've had some problems with ear wax but i figure my hearing is sensitive enough for now, i don't need to get them flushed. :P

maybe you have some wax, Elle, it doesn't mean there's too much... still i think they should flush if there's no harm in it. have you gone to an ear specialist to find out the problem?
