Nah, Linksys routers should be decent enough. Maybe you need to check if you can download an updated firmware. :-\

I was thinking about my Netgear router--a firmware change to an open source variant not manufactured by Netgear did the trick. No more timeouts.

I followed your suggestion and upgraded the firmware, and I've not noticed nearly as many timeouts lately.

Excellent. I hope it continues to work for you.

It's a good call. I have only recently myself learned the necessity of current firmware from following the Geek Squad learnings.

I never even knew that things like DVD players, televisions, cameras, cell phnoes and home theater receivers could be upgraded so easilyly.

Pretty much every electronic gadget these days can be upgraded.

Is this an indication that some manufacturers may be leaning slightly away from built-in or pre-planned obsolescence?

I hope so.

More like a leaning towards not bothering to properly test their products before launch. Look at the difference between PC games and Consoles in the reliability stakes, well up until recently anyway.

I did not want to let myself think that, but in reality, how better to test something new than to just start using it in the real world?

My showergel came from England this morning, one week earlier than expected and 100 kronor cheaper than it would have been if they still sold it in Sweden. And it's made in the land of the free and the home of the BRAVE!  8)

Firmware is a big deal in my business as it presents a lot of safety issues. That Mars Lander crashed because of a bad calculation put into the firmware. A lot of time and money goes into safety analyses and testing of firmware. Contracts try to ensure vendors provide disclosure to changes. Parts obsolescence is a huge money driver in acquisition. By time systems get fielded, they are already dealing with parts obsolesence. This results in many lifetime buys or added design efforts to allow for more plug-and-play, which raises a lot of concerns for safety. Maybe not a big deal for a TV, but for an anti-ship missile self-defense system it can mean the difference betwen the system working and savng the ship and personnel, or failing and either damaging the ship, killing personnel, or damaging the environment if it fails unsafe or not performing at all and allowing the ASM to hit the ship. We have conferences on this shit.

Crazy, I'm halfway to crazy
Suicide would waste me
Homicide would break me
Tongue tied and tied to the tongue
Tongue tied and tied to the tongue
Oh, is life as bad as dreams
I guess that's just the way it seems
